*How to do the Peer Assessments

You will do FIVE peer assessments in this class.

What is a peer assessment?A peer assessment is the same thing as a peer review, which you may have experienced in your composition classes. In a peer review, you bring your rough draft to class, let a peer read it, read someone else’s paper, and then exchange feedback on your work. In the peer assessment, you submit your rough draft online, two peers read and evaluate it, you read and evaluate two peers’ rough drafts, and then you see the results of the evaluation.

What is a peer assessment? Step one: You and your peers submit your rough drafts before the submission

due date.

Step two: You and your peers evaluate two rough drafts before the evaluation due date.

Step three: You and your peers read the evaluations and use the feedback to revise your papers.

Why are there three due dates for our assignments?

Submission due date—The first due date shows when your rough draft is due.Evaluation due date—The second due date shows when your two evaluations of your peers’ rough drafts are due.

Final draft due date—The third due date shows when your revised, final draft is due.

How to do the peer assessments

1. Navigate to the peer assessment.2. Click on the View/Complete Assessment link.

First Phase: Submit your rough draft before the submission due date.

click on the “Browse My Computer” button.6. Find your rough draft, and attach it. 7. Click the “Submit” button at the bottom of the page.

Peer Assessments TipSave your document as an .rtf file (rich text format) rather than as a .docx before submitting it.

If you submit your document as a .docx and your peer has an older version of Word, he/she will not be able to evaluate your work.

Peer Assessments TipSubmitting your rough draft will earn you 50 points for the peer assessment grade.

Emailing me your rough draft will not work because your paper must be uploaded to Blackboard in order for your peers to evaluate it.

If you do not upload your rough draft successfully and instead email it to me, you will NOT earn the 50 points for this part of the assignment.

How to do the peer assessments

1. Navigate to the peer assessment again.2. Click on the View/Complete Assessment link.

Second Phase: Evaluate the rough drafts of two of your peers before the evaluation due date.

4. Scroll down the page and download your peer’s paper. 5. Read the paper and answer the questions about it, making sure to assign him/her points.6. Repeat the process for User 2.

Peer Assessment TipsAlong with your written feedback, be sure to assign your peers points for each question.

If the person you are evaluating did not submit anything, give him/her zero points.

If you leave the boxes for points blank, Blackboard will show that you did not do the evaluation, so you MUST assign him/her points, even if it is zero points.

Peer Assessment TipsBe sure to award the papers you evaluate with points (even if it is zero), whether the user uploaded a paper or not.

You WILL find that some of your peers do not upload submissions, so you will have to award these students zero points.

You will earn 25 points for each paper you evaluate for a total of 50 points (25 points x 2 papers).

How to do the peer assessments

1. Navigate to the peer assessment again.2. Click on the View/Complete Assessment link.3. Read the feedback from your peers.

Third Phase: Read the evaluations your peers did of your rough draft, and revise your paper before the final draft due date.

But I thought there were three due dates for our

assignments. The third due date listed on your syllabus is called the final draft due date. It is COMPLETELY SEPARATE from the peer assessments. You do not have to do the peer assessments in order to submit your final draft (though you will lose points for the peer assessment grade). For the final draft due date, you should submit your final, revised version of your paper.

Where do I submit my final draft?

You will NOT submit your final draft using the peer assessment link. The final draft submission is a separate item from the peer assessment.

Where do I submit my final draft?

1. To find the final draft submission link, scroll down the page of the week where the assignment was originally given.2. Find the link titled by the name of the assignment along with “final draft.”

3. Click on the name of the assignment ([assignment name--final draft).4. On the submission page, scroll down to the “Browse My Computer” button.5. Find and upload your final draft.6. Scroll down and click the “Submit” button.

Final Draft Tips• The link to submit your final draft will NOT

appear until the period for the peer assessments has ended.

• The link to submit the final draft is located in the same folder for the week where the assignment was first given (i.e. the same folder where you did the peer assessment for that assignment).

Final Draft Tips• The final draft counts more toward your overall

average than do the peer assessments. See your syllabus for the weight of each assignment.

• You do not have to do the peer assessments in order to submit a final draft of an assignment.

• Blackboard will only allow you to submit once, so make sure you submit the final version of your assignment.

Final Draft Tips• You can submit your final draft within 24 hours

after the deadline, but it will be counted as late and 30 points will be deducted from your assignment grade.

• Final drafts will not be accepted more than 24 hours after the due date even if they are emailed to me.

• After the due date and the late due date have passed, the link to submit the final draft will disappear.

Peer Assessment and Final Draft Comparison

Peer Assessment Final DraftHas two steps—submit your work and evaluate your peers’ work

Has one step—submit your final draft

Is worth 1% of your class average

Is worth from 7-10% of your class average

Cannot be done after the posted due date

Can be submitted for up to 24 hours after the posted due date for a 30 point deduction to the grade

Cannot be submitted by email Can be submitted by email if you cannot get Blackboard to work

Is visible in the weekly assignment folder even after the assessment is over

Only appears after the peer assessment is over and disappears after the final draft due date

Other Tips• Refer to this information to refresh your

memory as you do the peer assessments.• You are NOT required to memorize the

information in this Power Point. Use it as a reference source during the class.

• Review this information before sending me panicked emails. Your questions are probably answered here.

• If you have trouble doing the peer assessments, call CIDT at 580-745-3185 or 1-800-435-1327 for help.

Other Tips• Don’t forget Murphy’s Law: If something can go

wrong, it will go wrong.• If you wait until the hour before any part of the

assignment is due, you will probably have problems, which may result in your losing points.

• If you are unable to complete or upload your work before the deadline—no matter what the reason—you will earn a zero for that portion of the assignment.

Other Questions?• If you have questions about Blackboard, peer

assessments, or other technical issues, call CIDT at 580-745-3185 or 1-800-435-1327 for help.
