Our customer’s feel confident recommending BMAS because we listen carefully to the individual needs of each customer, to ensure they get expert advice and the perfect bathing solution. We also develop a meticulous planning schedule for every client, based on experience gained through hundreds of successful walk in bath, walk in shower and wetroom installations throughout Scotland.” He said: “Not only do clients like dealing with a family run business, we are also experts in bathing mobility, this is our sole purpose and focus, not many companies offer this. DEADLINE FOR DECEMBER ISSUE - 19TH NOVEMBER

Last month’s introduction was possibly one of the trickiest I’ve ever written, given that deadline day was the same day as the independence vote which therefore meant I didn’t know which side had won but you would by the time the magazine landed on your doorsteps. Now that the dust is finally settling on the independence referendum, things have become much easier and this month’s Big Issue tackles the far simpler (!) subject of global warming and whether Scotland has the answers in its renewable energy ambitions. In a similar vein, we also have a feature on the work of the Borders Forest Trust which has recently acquired land at Talla with the intention of returning it to nature.

Amongst our regular items, the JRW Group takes a look at VAT and the Cycle to Work scheme, whilst the Community Centre not only bring us news of the various groups which use the hall, but also a breakdown of the available facilities within the building. The Peebles Portrait for November is local scout leader, Cheryl Turpie, a more recent addition to our community but one who has certainly joined in wholeheartedly. Soundbytes have kindly contributed a technology update and we also have our monthly fitness, rugby club, and Peebles Garden columns as well as news from The Bridge. Finally, we are delighted to include a report from Peebles Netball Club, surely one of the most successful sports clubs in town.

In Out and About, music features heavily, as always, with details of concerts from both Peebles Orchestra and Music in Peebles as well as a report from Peebles Concert band who keep us up to date with what they’ve been up to over the summer. There are invitations to a children’s Halloween Party and to join St Andrews Leckie Church at their winter Lunch-n-Chat sessions. In the charitable sector, volunteers are sought for the RVS café at Hay Lodge and Tweeddale Peace Group are beginning to prepare from their incredibly successful annual book sales.

Last month’s Portrait, featuring Steve Backowski, attracted a huge response, particularly online, for which we thank you as it’s always nice to hear your thoughts. We would therefore like to reiterate our invitation for your suggestions as to who should be featured in future editions. Portraits can come from any walk of life and be of any age. They can be someone who has been involved in global events, someone who has quietly worked away in the background of a local sports club or charity or someone who has achieved success in their own particular field. They need never know who suggested them (most don’t) and we try to make the whole process as gentle as we can! Over to you………..

Jacqui

Big Issue After a warm spell lasting well into early October, Mother Nature clearly hasn’t forgotten what seasons are supposed to be like and we are now well into the colder months when heating is essential rather than luxurious. As the nights become longer, our electricity demands rise as we spend more time indoors and, even when choosing not to use electrical equipment such as the TV, we still need light to read or even to get ready for the day ahead. We have long passed the days when blackouts were relatively common and we were prepared with paraffin lamps, candles and open fires. At the same time, whether you believe in global warming or not, the Kyoto Treaty of 1997 commits industrialised nations, including our own, to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases by around 5.2%, later amended by the Bonn Agreement to 2%. The current Scottish government has taken this commitment even further, aiming to become a world leader in renewable technologies with 100% of our energy needs being met by renewable energy sources by 2020. Statistics released in December 2013 suggest that production currently meets 40% of our requirements, trebling since 2000, but is renewable the answer or does it also raise concerns?

There is no doubt that renewable energy is far cleaner than traditional fossil fuel power stations with little or no release of pollutants and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Technologies such as biomass reduce waste products rather than create such controversial

ones as nuclear power stations do. The resources are sustainable, relying on unlimited natural resources such as wind or tidal power rather than depleting finite quantities of fossil fuels. Renewable energy also reduces our dependency on oil and gas, leaving us less vulnerable to the vagaries of international politics (for example, Russia threatening to close gas lines into Europe) and, in geographic terms, technology such as solar panels can be used in most locations, including remote ones, which therefore has the potential to benefit less developed countries. It encourages economic development both in terms of research and manufacturing employment with some of the maintenance jobs being in isolated areas with few other prospects.

On the downside, certain of the renewable resources are affected by the weather so, if the sun isn’t shining, solar energy is less available, if the weather is unusually dry hydro projects struggle and even, occasionally, if there is too much wind, turbines don’t work. The technology is also currently expensive as it is relatively new, grid connections need to be established and large projects such as hydro-electric dams are intrinsically expensive. Above all, however, many forms of renewable energy affect the landscape. Whilst renewable energy makes use of the earth’s resources, the technology used to harness it is not natural to the landscape - think of all those windmills or the valleys flooded to create the huge dams – and indeed there are also concerns,

particularly with turbines, over their effect on the wildlife and bird populations, not to mention anecdotal evidence about their affect on humans.

In order to achieve their ambitions in relation to energy production, both the UK and Scottish governments have introduced subsidies for green energy projects, from household level right up to the largest of developments. Domestic producers benefit from Feed-In Tariffs where they are paid for the electricity they generate (even if they use that electricity themselves) whilst larger projects benefit from a system known as Renewables Obligation Certificates where energy suppliers are required to provide a proportion of their sales from renewable sources or pay a penalty fee. Given that the energy suppliers pass these costs on to the consumer through our bills, there are concerns that political ambitions are being paid for by the general public, leading to an increase in fuel poverty and placing an ever-increasing strain on domestic finances.

There is not, as yet, one source of energy that can magically fill all our global requirements without damage to the planet. We should, therefore perhaps be careful to ensure that we maintain a balance of different power sources, unless we are willing to return to those candle-lit, paraffin smelling, fireside evenings those of us over the age of 40 remember from our youth.

Borders Forest TrustHow many people know that we have our very own local environmental organisation? Borders Forest Trust is a charity unusual for its small size and yet very significant achievements. Carrifran Wildwood, the 1,800 acre site on the fringe of Peeblesshire, near Moffat, was its first environmental restoration project. For the past few years it has owned a similar sized holding at Corehead, the farm on which the famous Devil’s Beef Tub is situated. Much more recently, BFT has acquired a piece of land double that size, which sits high in the Tweedsmuir Hills. It is the estate called Talla and Gameshope, and it comprises much of the catchment for the Talla and Megget reservoirs.

These sites make Borders Forest Trust a very considerable land-owner. It is one that seeks to do the very best for the land itself, all the species of plants, animals, birds and invertebrates it harbours, and for people who can appreciate the true mystery and complexity of habitats returned to nature for proper keeping.

Peeblesshire has been widely grazed by sheep since the monks from Melrose expanded their holdings into the hills, and well before that. Up until a few years

ago, the grant system encouraged farmers to carry as many sheep as they could possibly manage. The result was bitten-to-the quick pastures, low in plant diversity and hence in all other forms of life. Woodland cover was as low as it could possibly be, with native broadleaved trees confined to steep-sided cleuchs and a very other few sites that had been formally protected. There were very few places to wander and observe creatures in a rich habitat. It was almost impossible to experience natural woodland.

Since BFT came into being in 1996, this has changed significantly. Many small woods have been enhanced and extended with volunteers helping to make them richer and more accessible. Community woods like Wooplaw, near Lauder, and many smaller ones dotted across the Borders from Eshiels to Eyemouth, offer wonderful places to walk. Events happen in them, art projects, skills training courses, demonstrations of skills like horse-logging. The landscape and the potential have vastly improved.

Most impressive in many ways is Carrifran Wildwood. Bought with money raised from individuals and small trusts just 14 years

ago, the first trees were planted on Millennium Day, 2000. Already the lower part of this magnificent ice-carved valley is woodland. The birch, ash, alder and hazel trees arch overhead. Honeysuckle starts to climb and flower, and, in spring, birdsong is everywhere. A recent visitor, who had not seen the valley for a few years, commented,

“Can`t get over how the Carrifran is really exploding with life… we were amazed at the vegetation and insects that can be seen. Emperor dragonflies were flying about, a sure sign of a healthy environment. We also stopped at the Grey Mare`s Tail and the contrast was depressing, a bleak sheep ruined area almost devoid of life, only the falls made the place look inviting. The Gameshope-Talla has the same feel about it and it will be something to look forward to when the BFT finally gets its teeth into the area.”

Now Borders Forest Trust is keen indeed to ‘get its teeth’ into the work to revive the wild heart of Southern Scotland at Talla and Gameshope. It has bought the site with money borrowed from a benefactor and now needs to fund the repayment of this money and start the demanding job of restoration. A fund-raising drive has started (see the leaflet enclosed with this publication) and BFT is looking to local people, for donations of both money and time. Please consider how well you could spend money on this outstanding new project, storing up natural capital for your children and grandchildren in years to come. Or become one of our loyal, hardworking and now very knowledgeable volunteers who give a day a week to working in the hills.

So here we are heading towards the end of the year already! We had a fairly mild winter followed by a slow Spring and a good Summer. Autumn is shaping up quite nicely too, but mostly still mild with sunshine. The weather here changes from year to year, we are never quite sure what each season will bring, but they do follow each other, are you like the seasons? Do you follow on year after year doing the same old same old? Of course there is nothing wrong with that but do you ever think that by changing one small thing you could improve your life?

Over the past few months some of my class members have been following challenges which were small but certainly made them all think about different aspects of their life.

In September they tried going sugar free which is actually quite hard to do, that did not just mean cakes, sweets etc. but any food containing sugar. It got them reading food labels and realising sugar is added to many foods you would not expect.

October has been all about water, trying to make sure that everyone realises the importance of being hydrated.

So for November I set you the challenge of being slightly more active, 5 minutes every day of some kind of activity preferably one you do not normally do, why not try it? Most people can spare 5 minutes, more if you can manage it, go on I challenge you !

Topical Tax from JRW, Chartered Accountants

These points are for guidance only and should not be used as a sole reference on which to base decisions. If you may be affected please contact a professional for more detailed advice.

VAT flat rate schemeIf your VAT taxable turnover is less than £150,000, you could simplify your VAT accounting by using the flat rate scheme.

Under standard VAT accounting, the amount payable to H M Revenue & Customs is the difference between the VAT you charge your customers and the VAT you pay on your purchases. Using the flat rate scheme the amount payable is calculated using a fixed percentage (according to your trade sector) of your total VAT inclusive turnover – some businesses using this method save VAT.

The flat rate scheme can reduce the time you spend on accounting for and working out your VAT.

If you are newly VAT registered you can reduce your flat rate by 1% until the first anniversary of your VAT registration.

Although you do not reclaim any VAT paid on purchases, you can claim back the VAT If you buy a single capital asset with an invoice value of more than £2,000 (including VAT).

Users of the flat rate scheme often prefer it as there are fewer rules to follow and less chance of making mistakes in the calculation of their VAT.

The flat rate scheme would possibly not be suitable for your business if you:

• make a lot of zero rated or exempt sales

• regularly receive VAT repayments under standard VAT rules

• buy mostly standard rated items

Cycle to Work Scheme

The cycle to work scheme is a tax-exempt employee benefit operated predominately through salary sacrifice. It provides an affordable and cost-effective way to encourage individuals to take up cycling. The scheme encourages employers to loan bicycles and safety equipment to employees for the purpose of cycling to, from and at work.

At the end of the loan period the employer may choose to give the employee the option to purchase the equipment. Typically this would be offered at substantially less than the original value.

Participants in the scheme will sacrifice a part of their salary in return for the non cash benefit. As a result they will save income tax and National Insurance contributions on the cost of the bike, saving between 32% and 42% on the overall cost depending on individual circumstances.

As the benefit is covered by a tax exemption, the employer will not have to account for employers NIC (at up to 12.8%).

Employers of all sizes can implement the scheme for their employees.

Employers will be able to treat the cost of the cycle equipment as capital expenditure and claim capital allowances in the normal manner. In most cases the equipment will qualify for Annual Investment Allowance.

If you wish to discuss any of the above, or any other matter please call 01721 720947.

Peebles Pensioners AssociationFor the second meeting of the autumn session, we were delighted to welcome The Lord Smith of Kelvin, who was the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. We enjoyed a very interesting presentation with some behind the scenes photographs and information on the staging of the Games. I would like to thank Lord Smith for taking time out of his very busy schedule to attend the meeting, which was very much enjoyed by all present.

The Pensioners held a Table Sale on Saturday, 11 October 2014 in the Burgh Hall and I would like to thank everyone who supported us on the day including those who took tables, those who donated to our two tables, those who came to the Table Sale and

who generously put money in the silver collection and to the members of Peebles Pensioners who helped, some of whom stayed all day and must have been exhausted! We raised £620 for club funds and we are very grateful to everyone who helped us reach such a fantastic total!

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 19 November 2014 at 2pm in Peebles Rugby Club, Eastgate, Peebles. The Community Bus will operate as usual. Will members who require the Community Bus, please remember that you must phone the Secretary (telephone number below) by 1pm on Monday, 17 November 2014 and that collection will be from the pre-designated collection points only. The kitchen rota

for this meeting is Fran Price, Margaret Morrison, Irene Howie and Doreen Motion. Will members please remember to bring their contributions along to this meeting for the Christmas hampers, which will be raffled at our Christmas lunch on 3 December 2014?

Our guest speaker will be Jean Proudfoot from Borders Deaf & Hard of Hearing Network. There will be a display of equipment, which members will be able to try out and if there is anything of interest, Jean will provide details of where these items can be bought. If any non member is interested in attending this meeting to see the display, please contact me prior to the meeting to book a place.

Many people would say that what makes a garden really successful is effective planting or well-built paths and paving and that is certainly true. But what is just as important is being aware of the light.

To begin with every plant requires a certain amount of light and putting them in the wrong places doesn’t work very well. So paying attention to the way the light moves around the garden at each time of the year will help you to place plants effectively. In a temperate climate, and at high latitude, there is a great deal of difference in the amount and kind of light that falls in the garden from one season to the next. This month, as the light loses strength and falls across the garden at increasingly lower angles, it is easy to see that, to use it effectively, light must be interrupted.

The light in spring is also low

but it is cool light; that is, it has a blue cast to it. This enhances bright colours and illuminates white or pale pink blossom. Lime-green tulips, pale lemon narcissi, thunderous purple hellebores glow in this cool light. Blue-green foliage and flat heads of contrasting acid yellow flowers make euphorbias a great plant in spring light.

As summer progresses, the colour temperature of light warms up; light is more intense and overhead for longer. At noon on a sunny day, the garden can look washed out even planted with bright colours. However, as evening falls, the same colours begin to sing out in the semi-shade. Rich colours like deep red, purple and dark blue can be very effective in dappled shade where you might think that only pale things would do.

As the autumn turns slowly

to winter, the late afternoon sunshine can often be intense and quite reddish in colour and there is spectacle to be had, if only for a moment, if you can take advantage of that light. Large grasses like miscanthus that flower late, and need all the light they can get, can be magical at a time like this. A small tree or large shrub with good shape and interesting bark, illuminated at the end of the day can be a visual treat, especially if it casts a shadow on a wall.

November is the time when you can really appreciate the landscape, the curve of the hills, the ranks of bare trees, the bones of all the stone walls, the roof tops and fences. That warm light is a good reason for painting your fence or your shed chocolate brown – anything green or gold will look great next to it. Yes, the colour palette is reduced but the distinctions of tone are only more subtle and any little colour is more appreciated than before.

If you haven’t got a winter-flowering viburnum in the garden you are missing the scented pink tassels of flowers on bare branches that will cheer you every day, all winter.

Having just packed up our local home entertainment show it was refreshing to see that there is still interest in quality music and sound reproduction, and that all of the hard work we put into the show may have inspired people to look beyond iTunes.

Speaking of iTunes now is maybe a good time to explain what exactly you are getting for your hard earned cash when downloading music.

When you download music from iTunes 80% of it is DRM

free which means you can play it on almost any device or computer out there.

Apple uses is its own proprietary AAC format, this is a “lossy” compressed format essentially the same as a MP3 and has a bit-rate of approximately 256Kbps.

For better sound quality there are new download sites which offer CD and High Resolution audio downloads.

CD quality downloads are DRM free and have a bit-rate

of 1.35Mbps.

High Resolution downloads are all DRM free and have bit-rates from 3.8Mbps to 8.78Mbps depending on sample rate.

There are also a few DSD (SACD) quality downloads but these are not so well supported.

So what does all the above mean in terms of quality of sound, you ask! I have used the analogy of video playback to illustrate.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

iTunes and MP3s - equate to old VHS video cassette picture quality, suitable for casual listening only.CDs and uncompressed FLAC/WAV files - equate to DVD playback which even today still sound great.Hi-Res 24bit 44.1/48Khz FLAC/WAV files - equate to 720p Hi def video eg SKY HD, Freeview/Freesat HD, a big improvement!Hi-Res 24bit 88.2/96/KHz FLAC/WAV/ files - equate to latest BluRay disk playback on a Full 1080p HD TV, wonderful!Hi-Res 24bit 192/KHz FLAC/WAV & DSD files - equate to latest 4K Ultra HD playback on a Full 4KUltra HD TV, awesome!

It’s been a very busy year for the concert band. The New Year began with the announcement of the winner of our logo competition won by Abi Reed. We loved the way Abi used musical notation in the words and we just thought it looked really good fun! A big thank you to all those that entered our competition.

We launched our new logo on polo shirts and covers for music stands at the Daniel T Ward tribute concert in May. The concert was held at the Eastgate theatre and was hosted by Keith Belleville. It featured local bands that Dan was involved in including the Peebles Silver Band and Development Band, the Borders Big Band as well as the ICC sax ensemble and of course the concert band. The sell out concert was a resounding success with over £1800 raised

for the Margaret Kerr Unit at the Borders General Hospital.

During the summer we welcomed our new conductor and musical director Vaughan Fleischfresser to the band. Vaughan recently moved to Peebles with his wife Gemma and brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge from involvement in concert bands from all over the world.

We are currently busy rehearsing for our up and coming concert which will be held in the Peebles Rugby Club social rooms on Friday 28th November doors open from 7.15pm with special guests Peebles own Flute group Tutti Flutti. We would love to see you there!

We play such a wide range of music and rehearse each week always seeking to improve but

most importantly have fun. We currently have 30 members age ranging from 12 – 80! You will be assured of a warm welcome so if you play a brass or woodwind instrument or percussion and would like to join the band then please contact Ewan on 07545778774 or Email [email protected]. We welcome players of any age and at any stage from beginner onwards.

If you would like to keep up to date on news of the band you can now find us on facebook just search for Peebles Concert Band or on twitter @PeeblesConcert.

Excitement ahead of leading pianist’s visit to PeeblesThere’s a special sense of anticipation ahead of the second concert in the new Music in Peebles season. While every concert brings its own excitement, that on Thursday 6 November has the pulses racing as it marks the long-awaited Peebles debut by Martin Roscoe, one of the UK’s most celebrated and most in-demand pianists. Add to that a programme that includes one of the greatest of all piano sonatas alongside works recently recorded by Martin to great acclaim, and the stage is set for a truly memorable evening.

Martin RoscoeIn a career spanning over four decades, Martin Roscoe has given performances world-wide and has made more than 500 broadcasts on BBC Radio 3. He has accumulated a repertoire of over 100 concertos and is equally at home in chamber and solo recitals and is famed for his thoughtful approach to the music and his easy rapport with audiences.

His recordings attract the highest praise, including, in relation to a recent disc of Beethoven sonatas, ‘one of the truly great recordings’ and ‘perfect musical judgement and a formidable technique’.

The MusicMartin is currently engaged in recording the piano music of Beethoven and Dohnányi, to universally rapturous reviews, and his Peebles concert showcases examples of both. Beethoven is represented by the first of his Opus 10 set, a work that looks forward to the great 5th symphony and back to Mozart. Martin’s recording of the Op.10 sonatas prompted the following praise from ‘Gramophone’ magazine: “Roscoe’s way with them is well-nigh perfect...a refined pianist with the wisdom of experience.”

The concert opens with a wonderful example of Haydn at his most concentrated – joyous and playful in the outer movements, solemn in the central slow movement, and all in about 10 minutes! To close, Martin Roscoe will bring his unique insight to bear on Schubert’s final piano sonata, containing some of the most poignant, sublime music ever written for piano.

Do join us!Membership of Music in Peebles still gives you the best-value way to enjoy the remaining six concerts, At just £60, you save £4 per concert compared to single ticket prices. If you bought a ticket for our first concert, you can offset this against your subscription

and pay only £46; less than £8 a concert!.

To find out more contact Rosa or Anne at here at The Bridge at the number below or by email: [email protected]. Glossary of TermsWhen I first joined The Bridge over two years ago I entered a world of acronyms and strange terminology! Now that I’m getting to know what some of it means I thought it would be good to share this with readers of Peebles Life. So I propose to cover a few terms each month and hope that some of you will find it helpful if

not enlightening! Third Sector – This is a relatively recently introduced term. The Third Sector refers to organisations that are not-for-profit and non-government. While they differ between themselves, Third Sector organisations differ as a group from for-profit businesses and from government departments and authorities. Third Sector organisations vary in size and in their activities. They include churches, charitable trusts and foundations, community and voluntary organisations.Voluntary Organisation –sometimes mistaken to mean an organisation that operates with volunteers. The term ‘voluntary’ actually refers to the fact that the organisation is ‘non-statutory’. A voluntary organisation will have a management committee or Board made up of volunteers but will often employ paid staff to carry out its functions. They are often – but not always - registered charities and are established to achieve a social purpose. Many voluntary organisations depend largely on grants and donations for their revenue.SERVICED OFFICE SPACES AVAILABLEThe Volunteer Resource Centre is the office base for the staff of The Bridge. Within the building we provide serviced office spaces at competitive rates for local community and voluntary organisations. This includes desk space, access to meeting rooms and part-time reception. We currently have two desk spaces available. Please get in touch for more details. Til next time…….Graham

At the end of September Peebles Silver Band and a contingent from the Tweedvale Pipe Band travelled to Germany to take part in the prestigious European Brass and Wind Band Festival. The Festival takes place over a period of three days (Friday to Sunday) and is hosted by the small spa town of Bad Schlema, 100km south east of Prague. Fifteen wind and brass bands from twelve European countries take part and we were proud to represent Peebles and Scotland. The Festival is staged in large marquee with a capacity of 4000 seats with space for catering and bar facilities. There are two stages at either end of the marquee on which the bands alternate. This means that the music is continuous with 60 non-stop concerts each lasting approximately 40 minutes. Our invitation to the Festival was as a result of contacts made by our musical director, Stevie Baird, when he attended it some years ago as member of the band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Although Stevie was always absolutely certain that the Festival organisers would be delighted to have another band from Scotland it was still big surprise when the invitation actually came. And so it was that a party of 40 musicians and supporters left on a (very) early Friday morning flight to Prague. Luckily all the travel arrangements went to plan as, after a two and half hour transfer from Prague, we arrived in Bad Schlema with only a short time to spare before we took part in the opening parade. The preparation for the parade went smoothly, as our larger instruments and music was already in Bad Schlema having been transported by sea and land in a van driven by the intrepid Martin Brown with wife,

Andrea, riding shotgun. Huge thanks go to Martin for all his hard work and also to Brown Brothers (Peebles) for coming to our rescue at the last minute with the provision of a brand new Renault Trafic van.

After the opening parade there was a considerable gap before we played again, as we were not scheduled to be on stage until midnight! By the time we took to the stage the numbers in the tent had declined but, nevertheless, the reception we received was absolutely fantastic. The Silver Band started with two or three numbers before we were joined on stage by the pipes and drums. After the pipes had played some individual sets to great applause the two bands combined to play a number of Scottish melodies. By the time we got to Highland Cathedral the audience were standing on chairs and tables roaring their appreciation.

The following day (Saturday) we played concerts at mid-afternoon and mid-evening and on both occasions the audience was every bit as enthusiastic and louder (there were a lot more of them) as they had been the previous evening. The concert programme on the Saturday ran continuously for 15 hours from 10am to 1.00am on Sunday, and for a period of nearly seven hours the bands were accompanied by the percussive effect of heavy rain landing on the roof of the tent. This meant that, for all this time, we were trapped in the tent with nothing to do but eat, drink and listen to bands. Life on tour is hard!

On Sunday, along with the other bands, we were bussed to the highest point of the village to allow us to parade back to the marquee, signalling the start of the

final day of the festival. Marching back into town with the Saltire at our head and with pipes, drums and brass playing Scotland the Brave and the Black Bear was an unforgettable experience. We then had the honour to be the last band on stage bringing the Festival to a close with the cheers of the audience ringing in our ears.

This trip was a hugely enjoyable experience and it would seem, from the reaction of the audiences and the comments of the organisers, that we did Peebles and Scotland proud. The Silver Band would like to thank everyone who made this trip possible. In particular our thanks go to our colleagues from the Tweedvale Pipe Band and to our guest players from other bands without whom none of this would have been possible. If you want to get an impression of the sights, sounds and atmosphere at the Festival, please go to our Facebook page.

As reported in the October issue we are hosting this year’s Borders Entertainment Contest which will be held at Peebles High School on Saturday 1st November. The contest (sponsored by Brown Brothers Peebles and BARC Coach Hire) runs from 9.30am until approximately 6.30pm and will present a wide variety of music from 17 bands, each playing a 15 minute programme. Entrance is £5 (under 18’s free) and there are catering and bar facilities. The Band will hold its Annual General Meeting on Thursday 20th November at 8.30pm in the Band Hall. The meeting is open to the public. And finally, our ever popular Christmas Concert will take place on Friday 12th December, so please make a note in your diary.

Peebles PortraitsCheryl TurpieA relative newcomer to Peeblesshire, this month’s Portrait, Cheryl Turpie has certainly thrown herself into the community, particularly through her involvement in the scouting movement. As an Assistant Commissioner for the West Borders Cluster which includes both the largest (Peebles) and third largest (Cardrona) scout groups in the Borders, she definitely has her work cut out!

Born and raised in Ayrshire, Cheryl grew up with her older brother and sister in a fairly typical 70’s childhood, involving lots of time outdoors, camping, playing in the garden and climbing trees. Her father worked as a policeman her mother ran a local Post Office and, whilst Cheryl recalls school as something that simply had to be done, the guiding movement was a huge part of her childhood from her earliest memories, with the entire family involved in different aspects of the organisation.

Leaving school, Cheryl moved on to Glasgow to study Product Design and Engineering before heading to Warwick University to train as a primary teacher. On completion of her probation year in Clacton, Cheryl returned north to Edinburgh to join her now husband, Craig, with whom she has three sons, Iain, Sam and Ben, currently all pupils at Priorsford. At the time of Iain’s birth, the family lived in Leith but were looking to move more rurally to bring the children up. Craig spotted an advert for a house in Cardrona, Cheryl agreed to view it simply because the drive was long enough to stop the baby crying and, within a month,

their move to the Borders was complete. Despite their only knowledge of Peebles being Cheryl’s day trips to the town when at Netherurd guide camps as a teenager, it is a decision they have never regretted.

Shortly after arriving in Cardrona, Cheryl called a meeting and within six weeks new Rainbow and Beaver groups were up and running. As these children grew, Brownie and Cub groups started followed by a Scout group. It feels natural to Cheryl to share the activities and offer the opportunities she enjoyed and benefited from as a child with the next generation and she is particularly delighted that four local scouts are heading to the World Jamboree in Japan next year where around 4,500 UK scouts will join 40,000 others from around the world – the logistics behind this are just mind-boggling! Having attended three Jamborees herself, Cheryl is only too well aware of how life-changing this experience will be for the teenagers. As Assistant Commissioner, Cheryl supports ongoing training in things like First Aid or safeguarding children for adult leaders who, in turn, run groups for over 500 children in Peeblesshire each week but she remarks that there are still around 100 children on waiting lists for both Guiding and Scouting and she would love to see more adult volunteers whether as weekly leaders, offering behind the scenes support such as admin or fund raising or simply sharing a skill with some of the groups occasionally.

Turning to Peeblesshire, Cheryl loves the rural setting which

reminds her of her childhood and enjoys that Peebles is busy but quiet and that it is still small enough for people to know each other. She also thinks that the town provides a huge number of clubs for children in particular and likes that the wider community are involved in providing these. Looking at Cardrona, she enjoys the soul that exists in the village and believes that residents have worked hard to create this through various groups ranging from walking clubs and book groups through to more formal organisations. She points to the fact that the village hall is used every night of the week as evidence. As to dislikes, she has few but would love to move the towns half an hour closer to Edinburgh in order to access the things not available in Peeblesshire more easily. She would however keep the bypass between us!

On the topic of whom she admires, Cheryl is difficult to pin down but does cite her parents for the things they achieved in their own community before mentioning her Aunt Johanne, a lifelong guide leader and head teacher, as the person who inspired her to follow the paths she has chosen.

Finally we address the question of what people don’t know about the Portrait. In one of our more surprising answers, it turns out Cheryl is a qualified arc welder, dating from her days at Glasgow University. We’re not sure this is something that will be demonstrated any time soon at one of the Scout meetings!

Christmas sets off at a gallop this year at the Eastgate Theatre when the performing horses and dogs of Jedburgh based Les Amis D’onno take to the stage to perform The Enchanted Wintergarden a spectacular new family show that mixes music and magic, beautiful costumes, stunts and tricks, a couple of (well trained) wolf dogs and,

of course, the highly polished hooves of a performing horse.

The Enchanted Wintergarden opens on Friday 5 December at 7pm and returns on Saturday 6th. At 11am on Saturday, the theatre is expecting a very special guest dressed in red with a bushy white beard. While Santa is enchanting the children, Peebles becomes “Rapt in Winter” on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 December when visitors to the Anne Younger Studio will be able to browse a huge selection of original arts and craftwork created by some of the finest Borders based artists including Janis Embleton, Caroline Marr, Andrea Geile, Linda, Robyn and Rankin Kinsman-Blake, the Wood Neuk, Joanna Thompson and Anna King.

Outside the Eastgate’s Studio, 12 independent galleries and workshops across the town will

shed an even brighter light on the high quality art work created locally by opening their doors to offer visitors a very special welcome on their art treasure hunt.

Christmas celebrations culminate on Saturday 13 December when The Downright Homespun Radio Company presents this year’s Amerrycana Christmas. With their classic Yee-haw!, the Ho-Ho-Ho-down is now an established annual treat. The Downright Homespun Radio Company presents award –winning music from the DHRC House Band and razor-sharp comedy from the Radio Acting Company. Expect killer hornets, the Drunkwatch team, local sponsorship and the latest news all interlaced with foot-stompin bluegrass Christmas music.

Tickets from the Enchanted Wintergarden are £8, £5 for schoolchildren or £22 for a family of four. Rapt in Winter events are free, Santa’s Grotto is £3.50 (all children will be given a gift) and Amerrycana Christmas is £11, £5 for schoolchildren. All tickets are available now from the Eastgate Box Office on 01721 725777, www.eastgatearts.com

Referendum

I used to think we lived in a politically ignorant society, but no more… Over the last year there was enthusiastic participation in referendum events and with a massive turnout of 87% in the Borders (89.6% in Peebles & Cardrona), unprecedented in recent times, the electorate have given a clear opinion on Independence. I, for one, will respect that opinion, and now trust that the promises made in the campaign are delivered on time and in full. I’ll work to ensure that as a region we get the maximum benefit from the promised maximum-devolution.

Over the last century real progress has only ever been made to deliver a fair and equitable constitutional position for Scotland - a position that respects our status as an equal partner with the other nations - when there has been a rise in support for the Scottish National Party and other Independence committed parties. Sadly only when threatened has the Westminster establishment sanctioned change. Not only was the last minute ‘vow’ of the UK Party Leaders to commit to maximum-devolution a significant deciding factor in the referendum, but it only came about as a consequence of the growth of the YES Movement.

Contrary to press portrayal the YES Movement is far wider

than any of the constituent political parties, including the SNP. That YES Movement was supported by 1.6 million Scots, but our demand was not for Independence as an end in itself. We wanted Independence as a means to change our society for the better - to tackle inequality, to reverse trends that lock some of our young people into poverty and disadvantage and, for example, to make real progress to move billions of expenditure from Trident nuclear weapons into expenditure of real benefit to the health and wellbeing of our society.

The ‘vow’ was to grant the Scottish Parliament “extensive new powers” through control over tax and spending and welfare powers on a clearly articulated, and almost immediate, timescale. The YES Movement and the Scottish National Party will hold Westminster to account to deliver this, because we want maximum devolution to build a better society.

The local economy

and… a better society starts at home…

We live in a beautiful part of the Tweed valley which is one of the reasons many visitors, both tourists and day-trippers like to spend time here. Cycling is a growing recreational and sporting activity. Resident and

visiting cyclists want to get out to enjoy touring and racing, both on and off-road, as well as the thrills (and spills) of mountain biking.

So we are doubly blessed that our beautiful landscape and excellent cycling provision have attracted visitors and hence business opportunities, and economic growth, just when the national economy has gone through hard times. Locally organised events like International Tweedlove and Tour o’ the Borders, as well as national events like Tour of Britain have drawn in thousands of participants and spectators; and from 11th to 13th November Peebles hosts the International Mountain Biking Conference. All of which attracts wide media coverage; encouraging people to both visit and to return; sustaining businesses and employment.

My thanks go to the many enthusiasts and volunteers who are transforming our claim to be Scotland’s top cycling destination into a reality. I know that some events have triggered road closures and disturbance and disruption, so I’d also like to thank residents who have tolerated some disruption but still turned out to give our visitors a welcoming cheer! Together you are making this part of the Borders not just a beautiful but also a more prosperous place to live. A better society!

Autumn GoldPeebles Orchestra’s autumn concert, on November 29th at the Eastagte, is certain to be a golden evening of orchestral music. Generous sponsorship by the Benson Family has made it possible to invite a talented guest conductor in Richard Nelson and he has devised a wonderful programme featuring two renowned, and indeed, sensational soloists – Alexander Janiczek, violin, and Jane Atkins, viola, who will perform Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante. Few violinists working today can equal the intellectual and musical breadth of artist Alexander Janiczek. Previously concertmaster of the SCO, Janiczek appeared as a soloist with principal conductor Robin Ticciati, and continues to direct them on a regular basis, both in

Scotland and abroad. Janiczek is a Professor of Violin at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Jane Atkins is principal viola in the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Since joining in 2008 Jane has performed Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with Alexander Janecek numerous times throughout Scotland. She has appeared as a soloist throughout the UK and Europe, performing and working as guest principal with all the major orchestras and ensembles.

The concert opens with Mozart’s Overture to the Marriage of Figaro and the Orchestra, led by Claire Taylor, will also play Bizet’s very popular Symphony in C – full of expressive melody and rhythm, sure to send you home humming and tapping your toes!

To get these two brilliant players as soloists here in Peebles in one concert, and playing the Mozart, is just too good to miss! Which is why tickets are selling fast – but there are still some left at £10 (schoolchild £1) at the Eastgate Box Office. This is indeed a golden opportunity!

Netball : Growing in popularityOver the past decade netball in the region has grown from almost nothing to become one of the sport’s junior forces in Scotland. This year’s recently appointed S1 team (pictured) are the latest to join the ranks of Peebles Netball.Scotland Call-upsThese girls are inspired by individuals such as Jo Pettitt and Lauren Tait. Just one short year ago they too were pitching up at the Gytes, practicising with their Peebles Netball teammates – now they have both been named in the Scottish Thistles long squad of 20 for the Netball World Championships in Australia next year. Jo has already represented Scotland as part of the netball squad at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.

Borders Adult Netball LeagueThe enthusiasm for netball has also rubbed off on the adults too, with many inspired to step back onto the netball court – with the recent introduction of the Borders Adult Netball League. There are three adult teams representing Tweeddale alone: Peebles Dragons, Peebles Hotshots and Peebles Jets. The league provides a pathway in the Borders from junior to adult netball, aimed at providing opportunities for the growing number of talented teenage netballers emerging from the Border junior clubs.

Festive Fundraiser: Coffee Morning To raise funds for Peebles Netball all the squad members are staging a coffee morning on Saturday 29th November at the Peebles Rugby Clubrooms in the Eastgate, from 10am-12noon. Please do come along and support the Peebles Netball squads.Sponsorship There are sponsorship opportunities available for local businesses – for further information please contact Linda Nicholson, Coach, Peebles Netball at [email protected]

After a bad spell at the end of September, where the 1stXV lost consecutive matches to Biggar and GHA, the coaches and squad have now ‘steadied the ship’ with a win against Hillhead/Jordanhill and a tricky draw away to newcomers Marr. They now find themselves just in the top half of BT National League 1 but have a number of tough matches ahead in the next month. The 2ndXV meanwhile are very much on the up, sitting unbeaten at the top of the BT Reserve League East 1, with their attractive brand of rugby averaging over 50 points scored a game.

The Colts (Under 18’s) still sit in the top four of the Border Semi Junior League with a month that

included strong wins against Gala Wanderers and Tynedale. They now look forward to a good run of form which will hopefully see them through big matches coming up including fellow top four teams Melrose Wasps and Hawick Wanderers. Only one match in the last month for the Under 16’s , a single point defeat to Gala Red Triangle, has seen the 16’s slip down the table a bit while other teams have completed more fixtures. All going well, a good run of games should see them safely back up the table.

Further down the agegroups, the High School teams are continuing to develop and perform at the S1, S2 and U15 levels on Saturday mornings, while the primary aged level of the Club – Peebles Piranhas – are on duty at Hay Lodge Park on Sunday mornings, from 10am.

Both of the senior High School teams have recently taken part in the Brewin Dolphin Schools Competitions. The Under 18’s defeated Musselburgh Grammar School 43-12, in the preliminary round of the Under

18 Plate competition. The Under 16’s meanwhile entered the Under 16 Schools Cup, and defeated Strathallan School in the first round before being put out at the quarterfinal stage by George Watson’s College. This was a terrific achievement by the team, and ensured that Peebles High School was the only state school represented in the last eight of either the Under 16 or Under 18 Cup.

Full details of all matches at all levels, including kick off times, can be found on the Club’s website – www.peeblesrfc.org
