“I CAN only imagine what theseparents and children are goingthrough...every day you’ve got totake a step forward, nomatter howsmall it is, and they’ll all add up.”Tony has since completed a cou-ple of long distance rides aweek aswell as weights, running andkayaking training. But as well as needing to bephysically prepared for the endea-vour, he also needs to raise at least$5000 to go towards the $300,000pool for the SydneyChildren’sHos-pital Foundation and the RoyalChildren’s Hospital FoundationBrisbane. For the past three weeks Tonyhas been on the roller enduro atthe Sunshine Plaza, in the hope ofinspiring shoppers to donate.“I had little kids coming up tome
and give me their pocket money,”Tony said.“It’s actually very hard physical-ly, it takes a couple of days after torecover from a session, it’s likerunning a marathon.”Despite Tony’s undeniable infat-uation with inspiring and helping
others, he has a constant remindernot to push it too hard.“My heart disease is genetic, Iwas told when I had my heart at-tack at 43, when they opened meup, they told me I should have diedinmyearly 30s, but the only reasonI survived is because my heartadapted through endurance train-ing,” he said.Tony said it was important forhim to keep his positive outlookand lifestyle for the sake of Mur-doch, now25with apacemaker and
defibrillator, 17-year-old daughterFreyja and eldest daughter Anja.“Before my heart attack it wasall about how fast I was going, whether I was going to break myprevious record. It was just purecompetitiveness and just wasn’tenjoyable,” he said.“Now it’s about looking atwhat’saround me, not going quite so fastand not worrying whether I don’tachieve that goal that day...I justtry and enjoy the ride.“The fact that I could drop deadat anymoment...that’s scary. But insaying that, every day that you’reout there doing something posi-tive, if you do die at the end of thatday, at least you’ve lived life pro-perly, and if I do last another 30years...that’s a bonus.”Tony will take part in the five-day 1200kms For Kids ride fromSydney to Brisbane from October13. To help with sponsorship or do-nations, visit www.1200kmfor-kids.comandgo toTony’s donationpage or contact him directly [email protected] .Tonywill alsobebackat theSun-shine Plaza this Sunday from10am-2pm at the Riverwalk stage.
