Small-Group Lesson StudyIn this one-day session, a group of up to six participants collaborates to plan a lesson, observes the implementation of the lesson and records their observations. After the lesson, participants analyze the effectiveness of the lesson in meeting student needs and work together to plan future lessons using the strategies observed. This lesson study is designed to be conducted in small groups to afford reflection, collaboration, and deeper understanding of teaching and learning.

Word JarELL Strategy
Procedures:The teacher will have to model the following process for his/her students:
Have individual students select a content vocabulary word. Students write the following information on an index card. All cards are placed in the Word Jar:
Content Vocabulary Word Chapter number and page number where the word can be locatedActual sentence in which the word was used Student’s own definition and illustration of the wordStudent’s name
3. The teacher picks an index card from the Word Jar and reads the word. Students try to guess the meaning of the word. If they cannot guess the meaning of the word, the teacher provides the chapter and page number for students to do a quick search. The word is then read in context, definition and illustration are presented, and the student’s name is revealed.

Prewriting TechniquesELL Strategy
Techniques:1. Brainstorming is a prewriting strategy for writing ideas based on the selected topic. This is facilitated by the teacher.
2. Word banks provide the necessary vocabulary for writing.
3. Drawings help students illustrate ideas.
4. Note-taking using bullets is a simplistic approach for breaking down information.
5. Graphic organizers are excellent for eliciting, organizing and activating prior knowledge.
6. Dictations provide students alternative methods for a writing task.

A Capacity-Building Modelto Close the EL Achievement Gap
The SIOP® Model WorksBased on years of research, the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP®) Model is the only empirically validated framework for sheltered instruction.
Pearson’s certified SIOP® trainers help educators learn the model, implement it in their classrooms, build capacity throughout the district, and improve academic results for English learners (ELs).
Plus, the authors of the model are continually enhancing it—validating its use across grade levels, content areas, and geographic locations.
A Framework for Organizing InstructionThe SIOP® Model consists of eight components and 30 features that help teachers systematically, consistently, and concurrently teach grade-level academic content and academic language to ELs.
The eight components of the SIOP® Model:
• Lesson Preparation
• Building Background
• Comprehensible Input
• Strategies
• Interaction
• Practice and Application
• Lesson Delivery
• Review and Assessment

Featured Experts Since 1995, educators have turned to the SIOP® authors for a validated model of sheltered instruction.
Results Snapshot: The SIOP® ModelBrockton High School, MA Between 2003 and 2009, Brockton High School dramatically increased the percentage of English learners passing the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS). Because of this success, The Rennie Center for Education Research & Policy profiled the Bilingual Program at Brockton High School as the most effective EL program among urban high schools in the state of Massachusetts. Brockton school leaders cite the adoption and training of all teachers in the SIOP® Model as one of the key factors in its success.

FOWLER ELEMEnTARy SCHOOL DISTRICT #45, AZ
From 2007 to 2008, Fowler Elementary School District #45 in Phoenix, AZ dramatically increased the academic achievement of English learners and struggling students. In 2008, the number of K–5 students reclassified as proficient increased by 120 from 2007, and a remarkable 75% of students in Grades 6–8 advanced at least one proficiency level.
Fowler’s bilingual coordinator credits A+RISE® Standards2Strategy™ as one of the key factors in its success.
“ Our teachers just took to the A+RISE® strategies.
They were clear and easy to implement in
classrooms, and the impact on students’
comprehension and engagement was immediate.
And many of the coaching teams really took
ownership of the strategies and integrated them
throughout the school. They became a daily

positive for our kids.”— Cynthia Bradley
