In Greek, EnA means “one.” Discover what makes you unique.
E n A C o v e r G i r l C a m p a i g n
EnA features a “Cover Girl” on each of our catalogs. She is a driven, sophisticated and successful woman in the local community. She is also as passionate about EnA fine jewelry as she is about her cause. We are proud to present our EnA Cover Girls and are inspired by their accomplishments. This holiday season, we are fortu-nate to feature a fabulous group of alumnae from Sweet Briar College. Read on to learn more about them and what makes Sweet Briar College so special.
an assortment of Sweet Briar College alumnae: C’Anne Anderson ’68; Mimi Borst Quillman ’78; Katie Weidner ’88; Jenni Vance ’91; Betsy Saccenti ’11 and Mary Rhoda Mabry ’80 (myself ), who live or work in the greater Philadelphia area. We are members of a larger Philadelphia alumnae community, sharing EnA fine jewelry, a jewelry company based in Philadelphia, in a promotion to benefit Sweet Briar College.
Tell us why the title “Pearls and Progress” is a fitting description for the catalog?
March 3, 2015, Sweet Briar College administration abruptly announced to students on campus that it was scheduled to close at the end of session. The impact on students, their families, faculty, staff and alumnae was immeasurable. Questions arose: What happened? What can we do? Progress.
Within a week, smart, professional, problem-solving, community service-oriented women collaborated to search for the answers. Saving Sweet Briar, a non-profit, volunteer organization formed to take on the hard work of reversing the administration’s decision. Meanwhile, administrators conducted what they intended to be the final graduation in college history for the class of 2015. It was followed by, what was advertised as, the final alumnae reunion. On campus, there I stood with diverse alumnae, who had come from across the coun-try and from countries around the world, in the Quad with signs protesting the closure as the Sweet Tones sang, “Sweet Briar, Sweet Briar, Flower Fair.” By the end of June, 2015, the Herculean efforts of Saving Sweet Briar had scaled legal and financial hurdles to regain “the keys” to the College. On July 2, 2015, it would hand the keys over to a new Board of Directors and to a new President, Phillip C. Stone. Saving Sweet Briar successfully paved the way for Sweet Briar College to continue in perpetuity. Progress.
July through early August, alumnae, including several from Philadelphia, volunteered to work on campus maintenance, such as painting rooms and buildings, to prepare for fall students. On August 27, 2015, the Sweet Briar class of 2019 began classes. As we approach the end of an eventful 2015, Sweet Briar College is in progress nurturing and challenging a new generation of young, intelligent, hard working women. Progress.
The impressive volunteer work inspired by Saving Sweet Briar has transformed into a new energy, as countless volunteers continue working to support Sweet Briar College. All the while, I told everyone I knew, not even affiliated with the College, about the situation. To my delight, women of all ages expressed their eagerness to help. A few moved me: an eighteen year old applying for colleges; a retired women’s college president; and, Karen Moustafellos, a mother, business owner, founder and designer of EnA, a Philadelphia-based fine jewelry company. With Karen, I envisioned an EnA fundraiser to financially benefit Sweet Briar College.
Today, I joyfully invite you to participate in EnA’s Cover Girl fundraiser for all the right reasons. That is, to support Sweet Briar College as it continues to PROGRESS while maintaining its integrity as an exclusively woman’s liberal arts college.

21 Historic Sweet Briar Buildings Preserved into the 21st Century
Sweet Briar College, opened to students in 1906, is situated on 3,250 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills of Virginia. The campus is also remarkable because twenty-one of the campus buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. Of these, fourteen comprise a National Historic District. All of the buildings are integral with, and enhance student life. To maintain these as examples of our American heritage, rather than simply tear them down to build new buildings, is another example of progress that defines Sweet Briar. Courtesy of Aaron Mahler, Director of Network Services & Advanced Projects, photographs of the campus in this catalog give you a glimpse of its historic and rural beauty.

EnA jewelry is simple, elegant and versatile. I love to wear it for everything. I like EnA’s simple Spine earrings for daily activities. With business suits, I like to wear EnA’s Clasp necklace because it harmonizes with my favorite Spine earrings. When I dress for special evenings, including black tie events, I pair my pearl necklace with EnA’s Moonstone Cushion cut earrings.

The battle to save Sweet Briar resulted in some new traditions, among them the Founder’s Day Prayer Walk. Here, nine walkers cross in front of the historic
facade of the Mary Helen Cochran Library before stopping to pray at Fletcher Hall.

The Quad at the heart of the campus has been the gathering place for student ac-tivities and traditions since the College opened. The hitching posts signify both the robust riding program at Sweet Briar, and the tradition in which the classes battle to see which colors will adorn the hitching post nearest the Bell Tower.

Mary Rhoda Mabry attended Sweet Briar, ’75-’80, BA SUNY, JD Fordham Law. She is a wife, mother, attorney and yoga instructor. The formative years she spent at SBC provided her with a priceless education, establishing a foundation for lifelong learning and fine human relationships.
Karen Moustafellos is the co-founder and designer at EnA
Fine Jewelry. Having attended an all-girls’ institution, she
understands the benefits of a single-sex education. She cur-
rently resides in Philadelphia with her husband and two children. One of the reasons she created
the Cover Girl campaign was to highlight accomplished women
who make wonderful role models for her two daughters.
