How Does Your Garden Grow?
Apparently very well, at Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg! Started five years ago, with the help of one of the smallest ever requested Two Cents-a-Meal grants, the QMPC garden has expanded over a few years, continuing to mean much to many. Nikki Kariuki, Mission Chair and gardener, points to the rapidly growing produce and the spots from where lettuce was harvested earlier, to be delivered to those experiencing food insecurity in the Lynchburg community. In a city where over 70% of the pub-lic school students qualify for free/reduced meals, and food desserts are abundant, the food grown in this garden is helping to meet critical needs. The majority of the produce grown is donated to the Salvation Army and the Blue Ridge Food Bank. Truly a church family project, the QMPC garden provides a variety of opportunities for those who contrib-
ute: planting, harvesting, maintaining, and delivering, along with the sharing of wisdom and moral sup-port. Does your church have a spot of land that could provide food in your community? Or do you have gardeners who could contribute from their personal gardens to the local pantry or feeding pro-gram? Food for thought!

GUATEMALA TRIP
With the help of Peaks Presbytery, 8 students
from UKirk at VA Tech went to Guatemala to participate in
our Partnership with CEDEPCA. We were there from May
20-26 traveling to different parts of the country – meeting
with different people and helping with various ministries.
In Santiago, Atitlan, we helped distribute Ecofilter water
filters through the CEDEPCA Disaster Ministry. It touched
our hearts to see how excited people were about getting
clean water for their families (something we take for
granted).
We are grateful for Presbytery’s support of our trip and of
the UKirk ministry. And, we challenge all of our churches to be part of the “Water Filter”
Challenge. Each church in the Presbytery is asked to give money for two filters ($50)
each. We saw first-hand what a difference these make.
We will be available at the fall Presbytery meeting to share out experiences.
Rev. Kathy Carpenter, Presbyterian Campus Minister at VA Tech.

On Saturday, June 1st at 7:00pm at Bedford Presbyterian Church, author Jim Morrison will speak on life, service,
and sacrifice for those living in Bedford County during the fateful days of World War 2.
This will be followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall where he will answer further questions and autograph his books which will be available for purchase. Light refreshments will be served
-----------------------------------------------
Jim is the author of “Bedford Goes to War” an authoritative documentary of this county during the war years and “Class of 1940” a fic-tional account of those who lived here.
Bedford has honored and memorialized those who fought and died on D-Day. It also proudly hosts the National D-Day Memorial. “Bedford Goes to War” fills in the rest if the story of what happened during the war years in Bedford County both to those who served in the military and those who remained on the home front.
On Thursday, June 6th the church will be open from 9am to 6 pm in memory of those who, in the days immediately following the Normandy invasion, waited in our sanctuary praying not to receive sad news of their loved ones (MIA or KIA Telegrams)
Then, at 7pm, the town will once again gather in the church for a Union Service of Prayer for World peace.
----------------------------------------------
Following President Roosevelt’s announcement of the invasion, Church bells rang and all the pastors and people in town came together as one for “Union Services,” praying for world peace at both Bedford Presbyterian and Washington Street Baptist Churches,
Thus, on D-Day 2019, the town’s pastors will once again host a Union Service of Prayer for World Peace, but this time with everyone together at Bedford Presbyterian Church.
The following clergy will lead this time of worship:
Rev. John Salley - Bedford Presbyterian Church
Rev. David Walton - Bedford Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
Rev. Rick Ecklund - Main Street United Methodist Church
Rev. David Henderson - Bedford Baptist Church
Rev. Wilson Brown - St. John's Episcopal Church
Rev. Henry Henderson - Washington Street Baptist Church.
Fr. Salvadore Ańonuevo - Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church
In recognition of its participation in those early sad days of the war, Bedford Presbyterian Church will again be open all day, showing pic-tures and story boards of some of the MIA or KIA Telegrams that were delivered.
