“…Even the miles of barbed-wire stretched around crouching temporary huts designed to keep the unwanted at a safe distance, out of sight even the boards that had to absorb year upon year, so many human sounds so many depths of vomit, tears slow-soaking blood had not offered themselves for this The trees didn't volunteer to be cut into boards nor the thorns for tearing flesh Look around at all of it and ask whose signature is stamped on the orders, traced in the corner of the building plans Ask where the illiterate, big-bellied women were, the drunks and crazies, the ones you fear most of all: ask where you were.”

-Excerpt from “For the Record” by Adrienne Rich

Background - Peacekeeping

What Defines Conflict?  How Does It Affect The World?

The definition of conflict is to come to a disagreement. If these conflicts are big, often entire nations can

become involved. Conflict has resolution, but with many more losses. It can destroy everything for a person. Dreams can evaporate in an instant even if the person

had nothing to do with the fight. So can homes, friends, and families.

Page 4: Peace Powerpoint by Cynthia, EnPing and Sarah

Main Problem What is the Main Problem?

Man will always disagree with one another. We are individuals who believe in different things. However, the way we deal with disagreements is what can change

friendships and people. Conflicts take energy, resources and belongings, in order to fuel it. It only needs two to start it.  There isn’t enough on this planet to be able to endure every little

disagreement, should it turn into an extreme fight. Yet it’s hard to change a person to look at things from another

perspective.

Quote

“Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events.”

-Winston Churchill

So, who are we?

We are Advocates for Peace, a group of 8th grader students dedicated to helping the Iraqi college students

We’ve decided to focus on the University students of Iraq because they’re the future of their country.

Page 9: Peace Powerpoint by Cynthia, EnPing and Sarah

Case Study – University of Baghdad

What do we know about it? Biggest Iraqi college - 80,000+ undergrads Seated on a peninsula - guards protection Over 80 professors kidnapped / killed and more

students murdered Only about half of the students went to school

regularly in 2007 Now about 80% of students are attending school A lot of the faculty has returned to teach again.

Page 10: Peace Powerpoint by Cynthia, EnPing and Sarah

Quote

“Guards protect the class with guns, a picture stands in place of a student who was killed only weeks earlier by a bomb on campus.” (Leaving the chaos behind)

Page 11: Peace Powerpoint by Cynthia, EnPing and Sarah

Case StudyThe Reason Behind Our Choice

Our Focus = University of Baghdad Though they are in one of the most war ridden cities at the

moment, the students and the university itself is rarely paid attention to.

Few people have even thought about university students in Iraq.

However, they are the future voices of this country, and no less targeted than any other civilians the city.

It’s not too late to learn about these brave people though.

Advocates for Peace – Our Aim

Our Aim :We aim to educate people about the college students in Iraq with the purpose of sparking support and aid for these students as well as to raise money to buy textbooks and lab equipment for students at the University of Baghdad.

Page 22: Peace Powerpoint by Cynthia, EnPing and Sarah

Our Message

We need to let the public know about the college students in Iraq because amid all the bombings and deaths in Iraq, they are given very little attention

However, these people also happens to have the future of Iraq in their grasp

If we are to successfully withdraw from Iraq while maintaining the peace, we must help the future officials of the country first

Conclusion

This is a crucial issue because to help Iraq’s future problem-solvers is one of the best ways to battle terrorism.

This problem may be solved with less difficulty if the nation’s own people are able to stand up for

The main purpose for the terrorists to threaten the university community is to disrupt the students’ education and terrify them enough to not take action.

Page 30: Peace Powerpoint by Cynthia, EnPing and Sarah

Conclusion

We must solve the issue in Iraq first in order to restore international

Helping these college students lets the nation’s own people have the knowledge + ability to solve their

Also shows that we disagree with the act of terrorism happening in Iraq.

Conclusion

Conflict has a lot of recognition among global issues.

Many books, articles, and poems are written on conflict and violence.

However, it is the decisions of many that trigger an action to stop any violence.

The question is Will we try to make change, or just let things stay? The answer is in you.
