PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH AND SCHOOL

Dear Friends in Christ,

We are fond of calling ourselves ‘confessional’ and June just might be the most ‘confessional’ month of this year. The first Sunday of the month is Pentecost Day. On that day we celebrate the birth of the Christian church, as we recount the amazing wisdom of God. It would have been natural for God to mark the beginning of his Church on the day his Son returned to him in heaven; but God had much greater plans. At the Ascension, Jesus told his followers to go into the city and wait until they were clothed with power from on high.

One of the five major festivals God had commanded his people to remember annually was coming soon. A mere ten days after Jesus ascended back into heaven, the festival of Pentecost would be celebrated. Pentecost was a celebration of the first harvest of the year. The barley crop was ready for harvest and people from all over the known world would return to Jerusalem to sacrifice to God in thanks for this harvest. This was the perfect time for the Holy Spirit to clothe the Apostles with power from on high so that they could confess Jesus as the Son of God, using God’s holy word to open hearts for the Spirit to enter in with the saving faith that only he could provide. Then these people from all over the world would go home, spreading the Gospel to everyone they encountered along the way; and the church was born!

This is why we choose Pentecost Day to observe the rite of Confirmation. Just as the Apostles witnessed to their faith, so the Confirmands confess their belief in the one true God whom they have come to know through their study of his Word.

The following Sunday, we celebrate the Holy Trinity. We recite the Athanasian Creed, which better than any other creed, describes the Trinity in Unity and the Unity in Trinity (our one God who is three in one and one in three). We find ourselves confessing, what the true Church of all times and all places has confessed, confident that the triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has given Himself for our salvation.

And if these two were not enough, we also celebrate the Presentation of the Augsburg Confession this month. On June twenty-fifth we remember how eleven Electors of the Holy Roman Empire put their lives on the line; defying the Emperor who had demanded that they denounce their firm beliefs in Scripture alone and instead fall in line with the rest of the church, submitting to the Pope and the Church Council that he represented.

In the Augsburg Confession (written by Lutheran theologians who served these eleven princes) these Electors had confessed that they trusted in grace alone, received by faith alone, as they had come to know the truth about Jesus Christ through Scripture alone. renounce their faith, they offered him their heads. They knelt before the Emperor and told him they would rather die than denounce their faith. Of course, left with such a choice (killing the very people responsible for electing him as Emperor, or backing down) the Emperor rescinded his order and let the eleven Electors live.

That’s our heritage; from the birth of the true Church, to its defense during the Reformation. We are in good company as we confess our faith each week in worship. May God grant us the faith to trust in him solely and completely. Amen. Pastor Huelle

When One Door Closes, Another One Opens

Daniel 2:21 “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding”

June is a month of transition for many of us. Our church will welcome new confirmed members as

they take their first communion. Military families will change duty stations. High school seniors will graduate and set their minds on college or technical school. Some kids will prepare for the new challenges they will face as they transition from junior high to high school. Some think of this kind of change as traumatic. Others see it as tremendous opportunity.

Pastor Huelle will retire as our pastor in a few months and we will soon decide to call a new pastor right away, find an interim pastor until we understand who we are as a congregation, or ask other pastors both active and retired to lead us in worship.

As one door closes for us another one will open. We watched doors close as we tried to call a new Principal, but we voted to ask Sheri Juszczak to be our School Principal which opens other doors. There are similar changes in our church boards. Some of our newer members are stepping out of their “comfort zone” to serve the rest of us. With your prayers and God’s help they will be successful and help Peace Lutheran Church and School be more successful in our mission. Doors are open for us to share our talents and ideas for the future of our church.

So where are you amongst all of this change? Are you ready to try something new or are you anxious that you would promise something you can’t deliver? Everyone who volunteers do so with courage and faith that they will succeed. There is no Parish Education Board University or Stewardship Academy. We learn by doing.

Jesus says in Matthew “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” Though some doors have closed behind us, other doors have opened for us to step through. Take the next step and, with God’s help, your success will be our success.

In His Service,

Tim Johnsrude, Board of Elders

TOP TEN REASONS WHY PARENTS WANT TO BRING THEIR CHILDREN TO SUNDAY SCHOOL BY KIM E. BESTIAN, AUTHOR OF BLUEPRINTS FOR CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

10. BEST FREE CHILDCARE! While parents are nurtured in their faith, during the Sunday morning adult Bible class, their children attend age appropriate Bible classes at the same time.

9. TEACHERS AND CHILDREN ARE A BLESSING TO EACH OTHER. Loving, trained, and dedicated Christian volunteers, who have a passion for faith development in children, will be able to use their gifts of teaching while children exercise their vocation of being learners. 8. DEVELOP GODLY HABITS. 8. DEVELOP GODLY HABITS. Children develop God-pleasing habits by weekly attending church and Sunday School. As they are filled with the Word of God and the joy of Jesus each Sunday, they will desire to continue in their Christian growth even as teens and adults. They will want to continue to use their God-given gifts in service to others as the church of today and the church of the future. Someday they will naturally take their children to Sunday School.

7. RELATIONSHIP BUILDING AND CAMARADERIE WITH PEERS. Children cultivate Christian friendships with other brothers and sisters in Christ. They learn what it means to belong to the body of Christ, as they experience being with other children who love Jesus too. Even parents establish new friendships with other parents.

6. CHILDREN NEED OTHER CHILDREN FOR INTERACTION. Classmates help fellow students clarify Christian concepts, connect Biblical application, develop Christian character, participate in discussion, and witness their faith to each other. It also provides opportunities for them to bring guests to hear about Jesus.

5. PROVIDES SHARING, CARING, AND GIVING OPPORTUNITIES. Children are presented with occasions to respond to God’s love by sharing their gifts, caring for others, and giving an offering as worship.

4. ENGAGES CHILDREN IN PRAYER TIME. Children hear others talk with God as an example to follow. As a result, their own prayer life is enriched. Being siblings in God’s family, they can participate in this great privilege of coming before their heavenly Father in praise, confession, request, and thanksgiving.

3. CHILDREN JOYFULLY PRAISE GOD AND EXPRESS THEIR FAITH. Gathering together, children sing, create, and participate in Christian music, art, crafts, reciting Bible Words to remember, and preparing for festival worship services. It provides Christian experiences with other children that parents might be unable to provide. 2. PARTNERS WITH PARENTS. 2. PARTNERS WITH PARENTS. God commands parents to teach their children about Him. Bible lessons are then reinforced by Sunday School teachers. Children discover that they can learn about God from other faithful Christians besides their parents who have taught them since birth. Sunday School leaflets provide parents with additional ideas and resources. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION. 1. GIVES CHILDREN A SOLID CHRISTIAN EDUCATION. This is an opportunity for parents who want their children to hear God’s Word (both Law and Gospel) with other children, grow in faith, know truth, and feel loved by God and the community of saints. Building together on God’s Word creates a foundation for life with God’s people now and for eternity. RY

"Not Even Ten Minutes"

(Jesus said) "But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come." Mark 13:32-33

Most parochial schools in the northern part of our country have a plan which is called upon if a blizzard hits the area. In that plan are things like who makes the decision if school is going to have a late start or is called off altogether; on what radio or TV station an announcement is going to be shared; and how the news is going to be shared among members of the staff. The list is a good thing and it usually works without any flaw or failing. Of course, most of the time the weather man gives days of warnings to make sure the plan is in good working order.  It might surprise you, but the nation of Japan also has a plan. Sadly, Japan's plan is not about a snow storm. Japan's plan says how people are be notified if a country like North Korea should ever launch a missile attack against the nation. Under the national warning system, the notifications would go out this way: 1. news of an impending missile strike would first be shared with officials through cell phone, satellite, and internet; 2. news would next be shared with the public through their phones, through the internet, and via emergency radio and television broadcasts. It's a great plan, but there's a problem. The problem is this: from the time a missile is launched from Korea until the time it explodes in Japan is around 10 minutes. That's right. Japan would have a total of 10 minutes to inform the entire country to take shelter. And if it didn't detect the missiles at the moment of launch, or if the folks in authority spent some time debating whether the missile launch was real or imagined, that ten minutes would be considerably shortened. Little wonder that this month alone more than 2.5 million Japanese people have proactively visited the nation's website, which tells them what to do in case of attack. I admire those folks who want to be ready. Of course, I admire even more all those folks who want to be ready for the return of the Savior. They're showing some seriously good wisdom. The reality is that the people of Japan have ten minutes to get themselves to safety, but the world will have zero minutes to prepare for the Lord's Day of Judgment. On that day you will be ready, or you will not. On that day you will have acknowledged the Christ as your Lord and Savior, or you will not. On that day you will have been forgiven of your sins, or you will not. Scripture is clear: Jesus is coming. About that fact there are no ifs, ands, or buts. Jesus is coming and we need to make sure as many people as possible are prepared for that unknown hour. To tell the world to be prepared is why The Lutheran Hour exists. It's why your church and denomination do mission work. It is why your congregation reaches out into nearby neighborhoods. It is why you share Christ crucified and risen with family and friends. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I am a sinner living in a sinful world. May I give thanks for the forgiveness Jesus has won for humanity. Now, while there is still time, may I share His Good News with everyone I can. In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.

Many of you have already read this, but maybe one of you has not. And, Maybe, this will inspire one of us readers to volunteer at Vacation Bible School this summer.

Thank you, Dennis Splett Pax Domini

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As the school year ends, our seventh and eighth grade is heating up! This past week twelve students from the seventh

and eighth grades went to Washington, D.C., Williamsburg, and Jamestown, VA. There we learned about how the

government works. We got to see the Capitol, the Supreme Court, and the White House, rounding out our discussion

of government from the beginning of the year. We also got to experience some of the many

monuments and memorials, allowing us to reflect on those that gave their lives to make our country

what it is today. It was a sobering experience walking around the Vietnam and World War II memorials

and seeing the names of those veterans while reflecting on the hundreds of thousands that never got to

see the America they were fighting for. It really helped the students get a more real picture of what war

is and the true effect it has on the people that participate.

We are also preparing for graduation!! This year we have nine eighth graders that will be leaving our school to take the

next step in their education. Most are attending schools that are scattered about the county and I will certainly miss

them. This will be the first class that I will see graduate and it is very bittersweet. I can't help but feel sad that these

students will be leaving. I know that God has some amazing plans for these young people and that he will continue to

care for them as he has through their experience at Peace but I wish that I could hold on to them just a little bit longer.

Peace and Blessings,

Tim Galligar

You cannot pray the Lord’s prayer and even once say “I”. You cannot pray the Lord’s prayer and even once say “My”. Nor can you pray the Lord’s prayer and not pray for one another, And when you ask for daily bread, you must include your brother. For others are included… in each and every plea, From the beginning to the end of it, It does not once say “Me.”

Lord’s Prayer A little Humor - God Bless

There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family Bible to her brother in another part of the country. "Is there anything breakable in here?" asked the postal clerk. "Only the Ten Commandments," answered the lady.

A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, "I know what the Bible means!" His father smiled and replied, "What do you mean, you 'know' what the Bible means?" The son replied, "I do know!" "Okay, said his father. "So, son, what does the Bible mean?" "That's easy, Daddy. It stands for 'Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.'"

Gods Riches at Christ's Expense

Page 9

The Lord Is My Shepherd

One of the best known and beloved psalms is Psalm 23, the Shepherd Psalm. There we learn that the Lord is our shepherd. And since He is our shepherd, we will not want. We will not suffer want because the Lord, our shepherd, will lead us to green pastures and beside still waters. In other words, the Lord, our shepherd, will provide for all that we need in both body and soul.

Yet, we live as though this is not the case. We live as though we actually suffer from want, that the Lord, our shepherd, will not provide for all that we need. And thus, we live as though the Lord is not our shepherd. And that means that we live as though we are not the Lord's sheep.

How do we do this? We do it when we put anything else before Him and His provision for us. When we think that going to work is more important than receiving the gifts that He won for us on the cross, a violation of the First and Third Commandments. We do it when we fail to give generously of the first fruits of what the Lord has provided for us because we think we don't know what the future will bring, even though He has promised that He will lead us to green pastures and still waters. We do it when we think that the Lord is only in the business of helping those who will help themselves, we do this because we have a mind set on earthly, temporal things and not on heavenly, eternal things. We do this because we have stopped hearing the call of our shepherd, which comes through His Word.

The Word of God is how our shepherd calls us to himself. Through that Word, the Holy Spirit gathers and enlightens us with His gifts. Through that Word, we are kept holy and nourished in the one true faith, the faith that follows our Shepherd wherever He leads us. He promises to lead you to your true home, to the land flowing with milk and honey, to a better country, not of this world, but a heavenly one.

And so, here's the good news: The Lord is your shepherd still, even, and especially, for wayward sheep. For Jesus seeks and saves those who are lost. He finds the lost sheep and carries them back to the fold. He is the shepherd that lays down his life for His sheep. The Lord is your shepherd. Let us live then as His sheep.
