Engine PerformanceWith the 407’s 2.0 HDI 16V 140bhp FAP 6-speed manual gearboxEuro 5 engine, Peugeot is the firstmanufacturer in the world to launchan engine approved in accordancewith latest European standardstargeting low pollutant emission levelsand noise.

Equipped with state of the arttechnology, this engine is fitted with anoverboost facility providing temporaryover-torque and ensuring that itsperformance is perfectly consitentwith the 407 and 407 SWpromise of dynamism.

The Particulate FilterIntroduced by PSA Peugeot Citroën,the Particulate Filter, is a veryeffective emission control systemincorporated within HDi technology.

Peugeot was the first manufacturer tofit its vehicles with this system asstandard.

The filter is a self-cleaning system,which dramatically reduces theparticles or black smoke emitted bydiesel engines.

A rich motor sport heritage providesPeugeot with a wealth of knowledgeand expertise in steering andsuspension and helps explain itsreputation for excellence in roadholding and handling.

407 is fitted with an exclusive drop-linked hub carrier double wishbonefront suspension system, providing very precise steering.

At the rear, the multi-arm typesuspension with inclined dampersincreases the quality of guidance andenhances stability.

In combination, all the elements of thesteering and suspension system ensureexcellent driving characteristics.

Protect 407 and 407 SW incorporate thebest active and passive safetytechnology, offering occupantsoptimum protection in allcircumstances.

AnticipateExcellent road holding, effectivebraking and superb balance, via thelatest generation ESP (ElectronicStability Programme), are the majorelements of 407 active safety, instillingand reinforcing driver confidence.

The braking system of the 407 givesadded reassurance and combinesseveral functions:

• Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)controls vehicle trajectory duringemergency braking.

• Electronic Brake Force Distribution(EBFD) controls braking wheel bywheel for greater effectiveness,particularly when braking on bends.

• Emergency Braking Assistance(EBA) increases the effectiveness ofbraking when necessary.

In addition to these functions, ESPadds 2 further functions:

• Continually comparing informationsent by the steering sensors theprogramme works by detectingthe start of any understeer oroversteer. It then returns thevehicle to its initial trajectory.

• The Anti- Skid Regulation (ASR)element of the programme acts onthe brakes and the enginemanagement to limit wheel slipwhen traction is poor.

Other functions, such as theelectronic displaying of warningmessages which alert the driver tofaults or automatic switching on ofhazard warning lights on sharpdeceleration, further contribute topeace of mind.

SecureSafeReinforced body structure For optimal protection of thepassenger compartment, 407 is builtwith programmed deformation.This offers maximum absorption anddissipation in the event of impact.

Further protection from front impactis provided by the installation of asecond aluminium absorption bar atthe front of the engine sub-frame.

Finally, strengtheners in the front andrear doors improves the absorptionof side impacts and contributes toimproved strengthening of the vehicleas a whole.

Air bagsOccupant protection is assured by up to 9 air bags* :

• 2 front air bags, driver and pas-senger, adapt to the intensity ofimpact.

• 2 front side air bags protect thechest and pelvis of the driver andfront passenger.

• 2 curtain air bags protect the sideof the head of the occupants.

• 1 steering column air bag protectsthe driver's knees in the event ofany impact with the steeringcolumn.

• 2 rear side air bags can completethe system.

Head restraintsActive head restraints in the frontseats limit ‘whiplash’ in the event ofimpact and the inclusion of rear headrestraints offers protection to eachoccupant.

Seat beltsThe front seats - and the rear sideseats, as an option - are fitted withpretensioning and force limiting seatbelts.

For young children, front passengerseat* and the rear side seats arefitted with mountings to accom-modate Isofix compatible child seats.

The Peugeot 407 has obtained amaximum 5 stars rating in EuroNCAP* adult occupant protectionTests.

Created in 1997, Euro NCAP is anindependent European organisationwhich tests the safety of vehiclesavailable on the market.

The tests include: front impact, sideimpact, pole test and pedestrianimpact.The results are made public in theform of a "star" Rating and arecommonly taken into account byinsurance companies.
