Six teams from around Sussex, who had won their respective heats, de-scended on the first class indoor training facilities at the Probiz County Ground in Hove, home of the Sussex Sharks. The six teams were entered in to a hat and drawn at random to create two pools of three with each team in each pool playing each other once. Worthing High found themselves in Pool B alongside The Forest School from Horsham and the tournament fa-vourites, Chichester High School for Boys. Hailsham, Oakmeeds and Blatch-ington Mill made up Pool A.

The boys started their tour-nament campaign in strong fashion with a great display of consistent bowling only allowing The Forest School to post a total of 62 runs off the regulation 6 overs. It was then Worthing High School’s turn with the bat and an impressive display from the lads with Luke Winter retiring on 25 runs meant that Worthing High School managed 68 runs off the allotted 6 overs in re-turn.

Worthing High’s second pool game saw them come face to face with the tournament favourites, Chichester High School for Boys. Worthing lost the toss and were put in to bat, but once again another awesome display with the bat saw the boys post a tournament high score of 78 runs off 6 overs. Once again Worthing High put on a masterclass of line and length bowling helped along the way by some fantastic fielding, which meant that Chiches-ter High School could only notch 66 runs in return. This result put Worthing High top of Pool B and booked their place in the final.

The 1st and 2nd place final saw Worthing High School face Hailsham Com-munity College who had won the under 13 indoor competition the week pri-or. Worthing were put in to bat first and once again, proved themselves de-pendable and consistent with bat in hand scoring 76 runs off of the agreed 6 overs. Another exhibition of dependable bowling and excellent fielding from the Worthing High Boys meant that Hailsham could only score 54 off the al-lotted 6 overs handing the title of the Sussex Under 15 Indoor Cricket Cham-pions to Worthing High School. Well done boys, a devastating display of bowling, fielding and batting.

During Hannah’s first visit to the school Hannah delivered several inspirational assemblies to KS4 students

on her life to date. Describing how once faced with an uncertain future, she discovered a positive channel for her energies at All Stars, one of London’s most prominent boxing clubs. Hannah went on to explain

how she has transformed her life through sport, not only excelling at boxing, but acting as a strong role model for her local communities by promoting boxing in schools.

WHS students inspired in sport by Hannah Beharry (England and GB Boxer)

Hannah Beharry, Boxing for England and Great Britain, who has won a string of gold medals, visits WHS for the second time.

When Hannah returned to WHS on Wednesday 11th February she worked with three different groups on Sky Living Projects. Throughout the sessions Hannah worked with students on the six keys to success,

mental toughness, hunger to achieve, people skills, sports and life knowledge, breaking barriers and planning for success using her own life experiences and team building skills.

Leader of Physical Education at Worthing High, Marie Field said: 'The day was incredible, students were motivated and inspired throughout. Hannah is an inspirational role model and ambassador for the positive

influence of sport. Projects and programme’s like these are invaluable to help young people develop important life skills that will help them in and outside of school, now and in the future.”

Speaking about her role as an Athlete Mentor, Hannah commented: “I wanted to get involved because I

want to play my part in helping young people change their lives. Through telling my own life story the

students have a real life example of someone from a disadvantaged background who was ‘destined to fail’ and has, in fact, managed, through determination, confidence and ambition, to change their life and over-

come obstacles to achieve things beyond their wildest dreams.

“Sport has helped me to turn my life around, helping me to gain confidence in myself, grow as a person,

meet new people and become the person I am today

We look forward to running various new projects next year.

All girls are to be congratulated on their continued commitment and team spirit throughout the season. The girls have been an absolute pleasure to take to all fixtures and I look forward to their Continued commitment and team spirit for next season. Well done to Team: Jazmin Compton, Erin Upfield, Emma Wilson, Dolly Culver, Shania Clements, Lucy Steel, Lottie Sparks and Paula Ladero

Cricket Academy update The cricket academy has gone from strength to strength following its successful launch in June. The cricket club has good participation rates and 8 students have been identified as the first WHS academy players. Gifted and Talented sessions have also been introduced with local feeder schools once a month.

Cricket Academy players county success Well done to Jaynil Patel, Maudh Khan, Ammad Khan and Luke Winter who have made it into the West Sussex Spartans. The students from Worthing High School cricket academy were put through their paces during a three week trial held at the Sussex County Ground. Over 120 students across the county from years 8 and 9 took part in the trials. Twenty students were selected, 4 from Worthing High school. The students will now go on to an eight week training programme ending in several trial matches at the end of May. If the boys are successful they will be awarded with a place in the county squad

Well done to all students who have attended the cricket club this year and to those students have been selected to become academy players. Please remember, if you would like to get involved in cricket, Alan and Matt run the cricket club from 3.15-4.30 pm every Wednesday in the SPH. Training for academy players runs from 4.30—5.45 pm.

Time to Dance

At this years Time to Dance Event, twenty six students performed on stage over the three nights. These students represented Worthing High School to a very high standard and I am very proud of how they conducted themselves. They not only performed onstage but they assisted in the smooth running of all three shows by introducing each schools performance, selling programmes, welcoming the audi-ence and taking care of the younger students. The evenings were a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Dolly Culver’s stoolball dream continues

Last year Dolly represented England U21s in a game against a President’s team where she pitted her skills against some of the best players in the country. Now Dolly has been selected for U18 trials for Surrey County taking place at North Holmwood on April 26th. We wish Dolly all the best and look forward to hearing how she got on.

Sports Bursary winners announced

Worthing High School has recently awarded five outstanding students a Sports Bursary to help develop their potential within their chosen sport. Funded by generous donations from local businesses and honoured alumni, and supported by the school’s Leadership team, the year 10 and year 11 students were required to fulfil a number of academic and sporting criteria to ensure their application was successful. The Sports Bursary idea was conceived by Worthing High School’s PE Department to support elite sporting ability students in their endeavours, particularly as travel and equipment costs at the top level are an expensive business. Year 11 students Dolly Culver, Ben Curtis and Lewis Strotten and year 10 students Marc Charlesworth and Luke Moore were successful in their applications. Dolly has recently represented England U21s at Stoolball, Ben plays national men’s league Water Polo and Lewis is in the GB Junior Rifle shooting team. Marc was the Indoor U14 National Archery Champion and represented England last year whilst Luke swims for the Shiverers in regional and national competitions. Through kind support from Carpenter Box Financial Consultants and Shafiques Indian Restaurant, the students are able to continue their aspirations in their chosen arena.

Year 10 Boys Football

After a year in the wilderness, the Year 10 boys football team kicked off the season with a fantastic, hard fought win against a mighty Steyning team who won the league last year. Through a combination of skill, commitment and energy, the boys put a massive dent in Steyning’s chances of winning the title again. Jake Swift put the WHS boys on the way with a sublime first touch goal then Ollie Dengate secured the win with a great individual effort in the second half. Although Steyning came on strong in the second half and scored to set up a nail biting final few minutes, the boys hung on for a famous victory. In the second round, we played a strong St. Andrew’s side who were quickly out of the blocks. They scored first but Ben Redman equalised with a fabulous 25 yard free kick. St. Andrew’s scored early in the second half and secured the lead which they never relented on. A great effort but a tough day at the office! Round three was an away fixture against Sir Robert Woodard Academy who reputedly had a number of very good players which would cause us problems. However, the boys got to work straight from the whistle keeping the ball on the deck to outwit the opponents with skill and tactical awareness. After 20 minutes, we were 3-0 up with goals from Ollie Dengate, Naqib Chowdhury and Ben Colburn. Although SRWA threatened our goal, Charlie Weelen had ‘safe hands’ and they never put the ball in the back of the net. With another three goals (a brace from Ollie and Ben) plus a final goal by Luke Brown, WHS ran out comfortable 6-0 winners. The performances this year have shown maturity and excellence as the boys have represented WHS proudly. Well done to all involved: Charlie Weelen, Pierre Naylor, Cam Blackburn, Joe Birch, James Fricker, Ryan Porter, Ben Redman (Captain), Ollie Dengate, Ben Colburn, Ethan Pickering, Luke Brown, Naqib Chowdhury, Jake Swift, Maurizio Cardoso and James Fullard.

Sport Leaders hit the ground running! The Sports Leaders are doing a fantastic job raising awareness of sport and PE throughout the school. As well as helping to officiate, score and run the Sussex CC indoor cricket competitions held at WHS, many have been in to recent Community assemblies to promote ‘getting involved’. They will also promote extra-curricular clubs in their respective Family Groups to ensure all know what’s on and when. In the Summer Term, Sports Leaders will be running activities at lunchtime to allow students to participate in structured games against other students. There will be opportunities for students to apply to be a Sports Leader later in the calendar year.

Year 8 & 9 Netball: A Mixed Season! Encouraging early victories in friendly fixtures v Rydon provided evidence of good potential. Some of the girls continued to train hard despite the netball Leagues not starting until February and many of them being involved in other school teams and fixtures. Due to other commitments the Year 9’s were unable to enter their League, but the Year 8’s did so with confidence, enthusi-asm, high hopes and good spirit! However, their first game was nothing short of an eye-opening masterclass in netball from an extremely talented Sion team (many who play for the County team). Better luck was demonstrated in the next two games with wins against TLA and Chatsmore. Their League fixtures were completed with games against Davison and Durrington, which despite losing were much closer matched. Well done to ALL players who regularly came along to training as well as those who enjoyed competing in the fixtures. Looking forward to next year, where hopefully by playing together more will help each squad be more confident in their positions.

Year 10 Boys Basketball Another superb season for the Year 10 boys basketball team. Highlights of this year were defeating last year’s champions, Chatsmore, 45-31 and recording an exquisite comeback when the boys beat Steyning 28-25 after going into extra time, having been trailing by 6 points in the final two minutes of the last quarter. The boys have improved tremendously this season through sheer hard work and commitment. Well done to all: Sam Edgoose, Harvey Cairns, Liam Goldsmith, Ollie Dengate, Jacob Brindle, Marc Charlesworth, Jake Mepham-Richards, Luke Moore, Ollie Williams and Ewan Greenhalf.

KS3 Boys Basketball

A fantastic introduction to competitive basketball was experienced by a number of KS3 boys earlier in the year. U16 GIRLS DOUBLES BADMINTON TOURNAMENT The Annual Girls’ Doubles Badminton Tournament once again took place success-fully at Worthing High School on Tuesday 10th February 2015. Teams from five local schools entered the tournament, with players of differing standards competing together and against each other. Worthing High entered four pairs due to a late withdrawal from one school (usually two pairs per school). The tournament was enjoyed by keen and skilful players and as always good teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play was expressed by everyone. The WHS players competed with added enthusiasm and determination keen to win as many matches possible. Sadly, we didn’t win enough of our matches to win the ‘overall’ team trophy this year—but everyone worked hard, played well and had a great evening of badminton! Well done to ALL teams.

Gifted and Talented Collaborative Dance

Vale Gifted and Talented Day On Monday 23rd March six students from The Vale Middle School joined six year 10 students to create a dance in a day. The students worked really well together and choreographed a dance to “Friend like me” from Aladdin. All students thoroughly enjoyed the day and I know they are all very excited to be performing the dance again at the Simply Dance Evening on Thursday 16th April at Worthing Pavilion.

Thomas A Becket Middle School Six students from Thomas A Becket Middle School have been attending morning dance sessions to work alongside six of the year 11 dance students to create a piece to perform together onstage at Worthing Pavilion as part of the Simply Dance Evening. All students have enjoyed working together and are very much looking forward to the Simply Dance evening.

Under 15 Indoor Cricket Team success In February, Worthing High played host for the locality Under 15 Indoor Cricket league organised by Sussex County Cricket Club. Worthing fielded two teams for the competition with one team winning the event outright, booking themselves a place in the final which is to be held in the fantastic indoor training facilities at the County Ground in Hove, home of the Sussex Sharks on the 24th March 2015.

The students involved have done exceptionally well to get this far and we wish them every look in the final. I’m sure it will be a memorable day in Hove for these boys experiencing the first class facilities that Sussex CCC has to offer.
