Balance Ability This provided all of the Reception children the chance to improve their balance and coordination on a balance bike. It also improved the children’s confidence on a balance bike. Learning to ride a bike is an important life skill and we feel it was important to give the Reception children the foundation blocks needed in helping them learn to ride a bike.

60 children were introduced to the sports of Boccia and Kurling. Many of the children had never played either of the sports before. Children were enthusiastic about the afternoons activities. PE Coordinator spoke to 4 children involved in the session to gain feedback. Feedback from children about Kurling: “I learned that in Kurling you have to roll the equipment not throw it. I really enjoyed it. It was fun. I have never played it before, it was my first time. It was great!” (Callum) “It looked really easy but really it was actually quite hard!” (Holly) “Kurling was quite hard and you had to think about how hard you had to push the handle.” (Dion) Feedback from children about Boccia: “I enjoyed Boccia. I learned that you had to sit down because I thought that you had to kneel or stand up.” (Abi) “Boccia was quite easy because I could throw the ball next to the jack.” (Dion) “I used similar skills before but I’ve never actually played a game of Boccia. I thought it was fun!” (Holly)

The main aim of the Sports Crew is raise the profile of sport within school. Children received leadership training for two different but equally important roles:

Young Leader Children have been provided with the skills to organise and run playground games and activities for Younger children (Year 3 and 4) at lunchtimes.

School Sport Organising Crew Children have been provided with the skills to develop, organise and promote sporting competitions within their school in line with the Sainsbury’s School Games programme. They will work as a team to run intra-school competitions in a variety of sports and activities.

Children in Year 3 and 4 will be able to participate in fun sporting activities run by the Sports Crew at lunchtimes. This will allow children the opportunity to try new sports and gain new skills.

The children had a fantastic morning competing against other schools in Boccia and Kurling. They were also able to participate in some fun speed stacking activities. The behaviour of the children was superb.

26.11.15 Sitting Volleyball Training (St. Johns)

CPD session for staff run by a professional seated volleyball coach. Staff were able to watch and participate in an afterschool club that was being held at St. Johns Primary School. Staff were then given more in depth coaching ideas and games that they can use. Some really good coaching points/techniques were discussed and these can be used across multiple sports not just volleyball. A seated volleyball afterschool club will be available in the Jan-Apr clubs. Hartley to participate in a seated volleyball festival against other schools.

The main aim of the Sports Crew is raise the profile of sport within school. Children have been delivering sporting activities in the Year 3 /4 playground at lunch times. The Sports Crew are developing their leadership skills as well as their organisation and teamwork skills. Year 3 and 4 children have the opportunity to take part in sporting activities at lunch times – increasing pupil participation in sport.

Sports Crew organised a Basketball shoot out competition. Children had to try and score as many baskets as they could in 30 seconds. Sports Crew children set up the equipment, were timing, keeping scores and encouraging the younger children. They presented the winners from each year group with certificates during achievement assembly.

Year 4/5 Sitting Volleyball Festival St. Johns Catholic Secondary School

The children had a fun afternoon competing against other schools in Volley Slide (sitting volleyball). Both teams won their group and met each other in the final. The final match was a draw – so we had 13 winners. A fantastic achievement for everybody involved. The behaviour of the children was fantastic.


The children had the chance to represent Hartley. Children who are not typically known as the ‘sporty’ children were chosen for this event.

Team work


Children were learning new skills – new sport. All children developed their skills in Volley Slide and are now more familiar with the rules of the sport. The teachers were able to develop their understanding of how to play sitting volleyball. Mr Goldsmith is running a Volley Slide after school club this term for years 5 and 6.

The children had a fantastic morning competing against other schools in a variety of athletics events. Many of the track events were relay events, allowing the children to work together as a team and support

each other. HPA finished 9th out of 16 teams – total score 426. The boys team finished 5th out of 16 and the girls team finished 12th out of 16. Mr Dutton was very impressed with the attitude and sportsman ship of all the children who took part. The behaviour of the children was superb.

The children were able to take part in, and develop their skills in a range of athletics events (both track and field).

Improving the positive attitude to PE All children developed their skills in athletics and are now more familiar with the different events. Parent comment: ‘Please can you thank Mrs Fewell and Mr Dutton for organising this event for Hartley Primary Academy. The children had a great day there and I really hope that the school will enter into this competition each year’. (parent of Year 6 child).

Year 3 Dodgeball Taster Session 1.30-2.30pm

28 children were introduced to the sports of Dodgeball. Many of the children had never played the sport before. Children were enthusiastic about the afternoon’s activities. The children responded really well to the Take Pride coaches. Take Pride provided lessons plans that the school were able to keep and re-use. Miss Shorter was very impressed with the differentiation in the session and how they adapted the session for a child with restricted mobility. One child, who has restricted mobility, really seemed to enjoy the session. It was the most enthusiastic she has been about PE and Miss Shorter was really pleased with how active and independent she was throughout the session. Feedback from children: “I was really scared of playing dodgeball before because I got the ball in my face but now I really love it and I want to play it again.” Mia (Ash) Many children have been asking to play dodgeball again suggesting they really enjoyed the session. Miss Shorter asked the children “Who



would like to be in the dodgeball team for the competition?” Over 20children put their hand up.

The children had a brilliant morning competing against other schools in short 5 minute dodgeball matches. There were 16 teams competing in total. HPA finished 8th out of 16 teams. Children who had not previously had a chance to represent the school were chosen for this event. Miss Shorter was delighted with the behaviour of the children. The children demonstrated superb teamwork and equality, making sure all players played equal minutes.

The children were able to learn new skills and learn the rules of a new sport.

Children were evaluating their performance and suggesting ways they could improve for the next match.

The teacher has also gained a better understanding of the rules of dodgeball and would now be more confident delivering dodgeball lessons in school.

Children had to try and score a penalty past Mr Dutton or Mr Goldsmith from 3 distances. Children had to score from the first distance to be able to progress to the second distance. Sports Crew children set up the equipment, were measuring the distances, keeping scores and encouraging the children. They presented the winners from each year group with certificates during achievement assembly.

High 5 Netball Competition

8 children, 6 from Year 6 and 2 from Year 5, were given the opportunity to represent the school in Netball. Children wore the netball kit with pride and played in good spirits. HPA were unbeaten in the group stage of the competition – winning 5 matches and drawing 1 match. HPA won the group. Unfortunately, HPA lost the semi-final 1-0. It was a valiant effort from the team but the ball just would not go in the hoop in that semi-final! Mrs Gall supported this event and provided valuable netball coaching throughout the competition. Mrs Gall, also provided the team with a netball coaching session during PE, in the week before the competition.

The children were able to learn new skills and learn the rules of a new sport, as well as keeping score.

Children have a greater understanding of the different positons of a netball team as they were rotated every match and had a chance to play in every position.

Children were able to build relationships with children in different year groups.

8 children from Key Stage 2 were given the opportunity to compete against other schools in a gymnastics competition. These children were able to benefit from additional gymnastics coaching to help them prepare for the competition, improving their skill and performance level. They were also able to represent their school and take part in competitive sport. The children chosen to compete were not allowed to take part in more than one hour of gymnastics coaching outside of school per week.

The reception children were given the opportunity to improve their balance on a bike, in preparation for learning to ride a bike. All children who took part in this activity improved their confidence on a bike as well as their balance. The Reception staff were very pleased with the Take Pride coaches who delivered the sessions. The children were very responsive to them and thoroughly enjoyed the sessions. Teachers remarked about noticeable improvements children made during the sessions and would now like to purchase some of these balance bikes to allow these children and future children the opportunity on a daily basis to improve their confidence and balance on a bike.



Mrs Fewell is looking into purchasing some balance bikes for Reception and Year 1.

20.4.16 Quick Sticks Competition (Hockey)

The children had a brilliant morning competing against other schools in 12 minute hockey matches. All children were substituted during each match – therefore all children played in every group stage match. There were 10 teams competing in each age group. HPA Year 4 finished 4th out of 5 in the group stage. They improved greatly with every match and it was very rewarding watching them grow in confidence throughout the morning. HPA Year 5/6 finished 3rd out of 5 in the group stage. This team were more able and really worked well as a team. Mrs Gall supported this team and was very impressed with the way they encouraged each other and made good use of attacking/defending strategies. Only the top 2 teams from each age group went through to the knockout stages. Many children who had not previously had a chance to represent the school were chosen for this event. The children demonstrated superb teamwork and attitude throughout the competition – even when losing. For many of the Year 4 children, this was their first experience of playing hockey. Year 5/6 have had more experience during PE lessons.

A fantastic afternoon was had by all. The children competed in 5 matches – improving their performance in each match. The children demonstrated superb teamwork and attitude throughout the competition – even when losing. For many of the children, this was their first experience of playing competitive tag rugby - both Year 5 and Year 6 had played tag rugby in school PE lessons, but had never competed against other schools.

All children developed their skills and strategies in tag rugby and are now more familiar with the game. This event also provided the teachers with an opportunity to refresh and improve their understanding of the rules in tag rugby, which will develop the understanding and skill of the children in future lessons.

4.5.16 Futsal Competition

A fantastic afternoon was had by all today. 7 year 4 children were chosen to represent the school in Futsal – a type of football. The children chosen do not play for clubs outside of school and were a mixture of boys and girls.

Another success of the day was a Hartley child being chosen as ‘Girl of the tournament’ for showing real grit and determination in every game and her level of skill was noticeably improving with every match. The behaviour of the children was fantastic as always.

5.5.16 Tri Golf Competition

This was an opportunity for the children to take part in a new sport (for most of them). The children competed against other schools in a range of fun golfing activities. Miss Shorter was very impressed with the determination the children demonstrated and the rate at which their skills and understanding of the sport improved. Again, children felt part of a team and were all very proud to be selected to represent their school. Miss Shorter now has a bank of fun games that can be used when teaching Tri Golf which can be shared between the staff to improve future Tri Golf lessons.

18.5.16 Infant Agility

What an exciting morning! It was very rewarding to watch out younger children represent the school so well and try their best in every single activity on offer. The children competed in a number of fun agility tasks and their scores were added together at the end. Hartley came 6th out of 14 teams which was a fantastic achievement considering our team was made up of just year 1 children and the other teams had a mx of year 1 and 2 children. We could not take any year 2 children to this competition as it was ‘pirate week’.

10.6.16 Purchase of Kurling equipment

The year 3 children have had taster sessions of Kurling this year and thoroughly enjoyed the sport. The purchase of this equipment will allow all children in the school to be able to try this Olympic sport. The equipment is going to be used this year in both KS1 and KS2 sports days. The equipment is then available to use during PE and if staff would like to run an after school club involving this sport.

5.7.16 Rounders Years 6 10 Children

A group of 10 Year 6 children were taken to compete in this rounders competition. 9 of the children chosen had never represented the school in any sports competitions before. The children played 5 competitive rounders games – winning two and losing 3. The children thoroughly enjoyed their morning and, as always, the behaviour and attitude of all the children was fantastic. It was very pleasing to see



these children working together as a team, encouraging one another and surprising themselves with their ability in rounders. The children now have a much better understanding of the rules of rounders, how to score rounders correctly and have all developed their skills in rounders. These children left the competition with a greater enthusiasm for the game of rounders and sport in general.

WOW! What an exciting afternoon of athletics we had today. Hartley entered 3 teams of four children into the ‘Quad Kids’ athletic competition. All children had to take part in four athletics events which were:

5 strides jump The children really enjoyed competing in these events and found them quite challenging – especially the 600m run. The performance of all Hartley students was amazing. They each tried their very best to score as many points as they could for their team. We witnessed some very exciting sprint races and 600m races. It was a very successful afternoon. Hartley A team were the overall winning team and Hartley were the overall winning school. The children were extremely proud to represent their school and extremely proud of their achievements. This competition gave the children the chance to try events that they will become more familiar with in secondary school – such as the 600m. The team spirit shown today was fantastic – all children were supporting each other no matter what team they were in.
