From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Friends,

Over the past several months I have had the privilege to work with our Board of Trustees and Administrative team to map out and begin implementing St. Ursula Villa’s Strategic Plan. Our Strategic Plan provides a framework and guidance for addressing the unique opportunities and challenges we face as an institution over the next several years, ensuring that we are constantly focused on the best way to deliver the highest-quality academic experience for our students. I encourage you to take the time to review details of our Strategic Plan outlined in the pages of this Winter Villa Voice.

You will also read about the many activities and accomplishments taking place on campus over the past several months including:

• Education: Our stellar faculty and staff, who go above and beyond to provide our students with an outstanding educational experience, are engaging in available professional development opportunities to keep them on the leading edge of teaching methodology.

• Faith: As part of our Junior High Religion curriculum, Catholic students were confirmed as full members of the Catholic faith when they received the Sacrament of Confirmation.

• Community: Planning for the party of the year is well underway with Villabration coming up on April 8, 2017. I hope you take a few moments to read the heartfelt letter from our Honorary Chairs Leela and Madhu Vrishabhendra and Holly and David Woprice. Our Chairs have tirelessly promoted and participated in Villabration during their families' years here and are capping off their Villa experience with style and flair.

I count my blessings as I consider the many ways our faculty, students, and families actively engage in academic and personal growth. Thank you for being part of our St. Ursula Villa community and for your interest in the continued success of our school. Sincerely,

St. Ursula Villa’s tradition of supporting our faculty’s professional development is an ongoing priority with far-reaching benefits. In response to faculty survey feedback, St. Ursula Villa Board of Trustees’ Education Committee compiled a comprehensive list of the wide range of available classes, seminars, and trainings available to them as operational and other funds allow.

Professional development includes:• Teacher-selected conferences and workshops • Graduate and post-graduate level courses and

licensure endorsements• Representing St. Ursula Villa at national Ursuline

Educator and Independent School Management conferences

• Transportation and accommodations for regional and national conferences

• On-campus teacher in-service training and seminars by local and national presenters

Recent Villa Professional Development experiences include Catechetical licensing; Master’s Degree coursework; conferences in Summer Programs, Science, Strategic Financial Planning, Literacy, and Child Development; first aid training and child abuse awareness; and Outdoor Education program leadership to Ursuline sister schools. Our faculty and staff leverage these experiences to enhance their own skills and knowledge, present that knowledge to Villa colleagues, and collaborate with fellow teachers on best practices.

Last summer, First Grade teachers Ms. Holly Heekin and Ms. Sara Jeck attended a national “Reading, Writing, Math & More!” conference addressing comprehension strategies, guided reading, and mathematical thinking. “In addition

to acquiring new techniques, staying current with best practices, and generally becoming re-energized, our favorite conference take-away was to implement a ‘Friday Folder’ communication log,” according to Ms. Heekin and Ms. Jeck. In the weekly Friday Folder, teachers share compliments, critiques, or comments with each student’s parents for their signature and feedback. Parental response to the Friday Folder has been consistently positive and an important step in establishing an open, successful partnership relative to student progress and expectations.

Our Villa faculty has also recently launched a monthly Professional Reading Group for which they are earning C.E.U.s (Continuing Education Units) towards licensure renewal. One discussion, led by Early Childhood teacher Ms. Abby Johnson, focused on Last Child in the Woods which presents growing research indicating that direct exposure to nature is essential for both healthy childhood development and for the physical and emotional health of children and adults.

St. Ursula Villa's teachers engage in professional development that directly impacts student learning; the possibilities are limited only by available resources. Professional Development resources are prioritized in St. Ursula Villa’s long-term Strategic Financial Plan to ensure that these opportunities are available and accessible into the future.

FaithJunior High Students Continue their Faith Journey through Confirmation

Fifty-one St. Ursula Villa 7th and 8th graders received the Sacrament of Confirmation in February at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral in downtown Cincinnati. Junior High Religion teacher Ms. Andrea Moeder guided students in lessons and projects leading to their initiation into the Catholic community.

Students chose and researched a Catholic saint who represented a quality or virtue they would like to emulate, taking the saint’s name as their Confirmation name Students also created and presented a 2-minute biographical video about their saint and why they believed emulating that saint in daily life would make them a better Christian.

Students also chose as a sponsor a special adult

“in the faith” to guide them in the Confirmation process and mentor them throughout their lives. The confirmands interviewed their sponsors about their spirituality and faith

formation, further deepening their connection. Sophie Helmicki, Villa Class of 2015, says, "I was proud that Lulu Murphy asked me to be her Confirmation sponsor. I went through the process myself at the Villa just two years ago. It really opened up my eyes to be standing on the other side as a sponsor. I was happy to share my faith and my experiences with Lulu. It was also great to see many old Villa friends and teachers at the Cathedral." Lulu says, “To me, Confirmation made me feel more connected to God and more independent in the Church. The interview brought Sophie and me closer because we are both now ‘adults’ in the Church.”

A day-long retreat added to the students’ Confirmation journey. NET (National Evangelical Team) Ministries visited the Villa campus and led students in large- and small-group activities, testimonials, and worship. “The NET Retreat was the perfect way for our students preparing for Confirmation to focus on what is important,” commented Ms. Moeder.

“The Team presented information to the students in such a dynamic way that it was impossible to not be positively impacted. Spending the day listening to the team members’ testimonies, gaining new respect for their classmates, and taking the time to slow down and pray benefitted all.”

As part of their Confirmation journey, each Junior High student logged twenty or more community service hours and performed outreach at agencies and organizations throughout Greater Cincinnati. Projects included making blankets for City Gospel Mission and sharing the experience of helping others in need.

Dear Villa Friends and Families,

“Life is a journey not a destination.” Although our families’ time at the Villa has reached its final destination with our five children and 30 collective Villa years, our lives will be forever changed by the journey. All of our children have their own stories to tell and memories to cherish — all of them would say that they loved their time at the Villa. They would say they made lifelong friendships, made a difference in the lives of those they served in the community, laughed, cried, and made a lasting impression on the teachers and administration of the Villa. We can say the same of our own journey as parents, including serving the Villa with our time and efforts with Villabration, the Villa’s wonderful annual event. We hope that we too have contributed to the warmth and community the Villa exudes and we are honored to Chair this year’s Villabration to celebrate our collective journey.

Our first experience at St. Ursula Villa was when our oldest son, Benak, started in the 7th grade. We had heard wonderful things about the quality of the program, including the outstanding curriculum as well as the dedication of the staff. The Villa exceeded

our expectations so much that the following year we enrolled our other two children, Kiran in 2nd grade and Barath in 4th. It was especially rewarding for us as parents to have all three of our children attend the Villa together for the only year they would be able. Saint Angela Merici said, “Reflect that in reality you have a greater need to serve the poor than they have of your service.” It was this belief and philosophy of service to others embodied in the Villa that we wanted for our children. We as a family will remember and cherish these principles from all our years here, along with many fun-filled memories. We hold dear the bonds we have formed with the Villa community from time spent with teachers, staff, and families at this very special school. Equipped with a solid foundation of service, along with amazing education and experiences, Leela and I believe that our children will have the tools necessary to become strong contributing members of society.

Dave’s and my Villa journey began in 2008 with our daughter Gracie starting in Traditional Kindergarten. She was immediately at home here. The care and attention to her individual needs as a student and a person has been priceless. We did not move our son Mason right away because Dave needed bit more “proof” that the Villa was all it was talked up to be. It took Dave all of a couple months, definitely by Christmas, to realize it was a perfect fit for Mason. He was impressed by how the children behaved and how they were always smiling, held doors and greeted all adults with a “Hello Mr. Woprice, how are you?” We were both overwhelmed by how accessible the teachers and administrators were. There was never a day that the Villa halls felt abandoned or cold. It’s the same today: parents volunteering on campus, children moving from room to room with a clear sense of belonging, and teachers who welcomed an impromptu visit to discuss a child’s needs or concerns. So it was clear: Mason had to make the move. We never looked back. Dave and I are certain that the Villa’s high academic standards, exceptional teachers and staff, and culture of community has shaped both of our children profoundly and will no doubt assist them in their individual journeys into high school and beyond.

Portrait of a Villa Graduate

As part of the development of the Strategic Plan, the Board of Trustees sought to define the elements of a St. Ursula Villa education which contribute to our graduates' documented success.

St. Ursula Villa Board of Trustees’ Marketing Committee met extensively with Villa faculty, past parents, Board members, alumni, current parents, and Cincinnati-area high school principals — all very familiar with our graduates during their journey through the Villa, high school, college, and beyond. Overarching themes from these conversations resulted in four distinct characteristics: Lifelong Learner, Confident & Engaged Individual, Compassionate Citizen, and Respectful Advocate.

These predominant attributes of a Villa graduate are clearly connected to our commitment to the Catholic Ursuline tradition. Every aspect of a St. Ursula Villa education, including academic and extracurricular activities, directly promotes these attributes in every student.

Mission Embodied in All Facets of a Villa Education

The Portrait of a Villa Graduate results from living our mission as a school each day — in the classroom, on our campus, and in the greater community. The Board of Trustees’ Education Committee and Ursuline Identity Committee is working closely with the Administration to compile, document, and catalog programs and activities at every grade level into a Program and Activities Inventory. This inventory — initially identifying more than 190 programs and activities spanning nine categories — will serve as a guidepost to inform curriculum and standards and as a dynamic tool to evaluate our offerings, ensuring the highest quality alignment with our mission. The Principal will work with faculty and analyze and adapt the Programs and Activities Inventory to implement program adjustments and enhancements to ensure that each Villa student’s academic, spiritual, creative, social, physical, and emotional educational needs are met — including gifted and educational services, enrichment such as Outdoor Education and STEM, fine arts and athletics, and spiritual growth through our Ursuline values.

At St. Ursula Villa we believe …

… that the primary teachers of children are their parents with whom the school collaborates to help the students develop their God-given talents.

… in the integration of Catholic truths and values through example, service, openness, and optimism.

… that daily prayer is important.

… in every student's capacity to achieve and that instruction should be differentiated to address individual learning styles.

… in the value of diversity which challenges students to recognize and respect the beliefs and customs of all people.

… in educating the whole person by promoting the spiritual, moral, physical, creative and intellectual development of each student in a Catholic environment.

… in teaching and cultivating the self-discipline skills that allow one to act with responsibility and integrity within society.

… in providing a safe and nurturing environment to promote student learning.

St. Ursula Villa’s Strategic Plan To Sustain Outstanding Educational Offerings

During the 2015-16 school year, St. Ursula Villa’s Board of Trustees, Principal, Assistant Principal, and Director of Advancement engaged in strategy sessions after an extensive data collection process which included surveys of parents and faculty/staff and standardized student testing results. This process culminated in the development of our Strategic Plan mapped on a six-year time horizon from 2015 to 2021. The Strategic Plan serves as a blueprint for maintaining St. Ursula Villa’s standing as a premier Catholic elementary school in Cincinnati and delineates the financial, organizational, and physical plant elements of our school. The primary focus of the Strategic Plan is how we live and communicate our mission each day.

ST. URSULA VILLA'S MISSION STATEMENT St. Ursula Villa, a coeducational Catholic elementary school in the Ursuline tradition, nurtures the whole child, fosters academic excellence, and instills a Christ-centered commitment to society.

Fostering a Culture of Openness and Dialogue

External and internal communications are increasingly important in today’s educational landscape. On an external level, St. Ursula Villa will leverage our Mission and Belief Statements, Portrait of a Villa Graduate, and Program and Activities Inventory, utilizing channels of website content, admissions materials, media relations, and parent dialogue to communicate our value proposition and academic niche in the local educational marketplace.

Internally, and perhaps more importantly, St. Ursula Villa will continue to foster a robust culture of openness and parent/teacher and parent/school dialogue to develop consistent, regular communication which serves the direct needs of each Villa student. This priority has been the subject of recent faculty in-service sessions and discussions. The faculty and administration continue to assess ways to make communication as easy and effective as possible.

Supporting our Faculty

The St. Ursula Villa faculty's dedication, professionalism, and passion for teaching provide an outstanding educational experience for each student. The Board of Trustees’ Human Resources Committee is investigating a competitive compensation and benefits strategy to support our faculty while also seeking faculty/staff input into their own professional priorities. The HR Committee will use these results to develop a future compensation plan for consideration by the Board’s Finance Committee.

Meanwhile, the Board of Trustees’ Education Committee is exploring Professional Development opportunities to help our teachers as they develop and prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of today and tomorrow. Professional Development provides our teachers with proven and practical educational strategies, connects them with peers and experts, and reinvigorates their practice. Our long-term goal is to provide financial resources to allow our faculty to experience the highest caliber of professional learning opportunities at the regional and national levels.

Executing The Vision with a Strategic Financial Plan

Our recent Foundation for a Lifetime building campaign provided up-to-date facilities, giving our talented faculty the space to deliver an outstanding educational experience for each Villa student. It also provided financial stability by: (1) right-sizing our Early Childhood programs overseen by an Early Childhood Director, leading to lower attrition and healthy enrollment into the Main School; and (2) seeding an Endowment Fund which, when grown through continued development efforts, can provide future financial flexibility to support our mission. The Board of Trustees’ Finance Committee, in collaboration with each Board committee, is preparing a Strategic Financial Plan to address all facets of the Strategic Plan, including the expansion of available financial aid to reach a wider population of families seeking a St. Ursula Villa education for their children. 6

Dear Friends,

St. Ursula Villa takes pride in our strong academic programs and exemplary faculty and staff. The Villa provides such a positive, warm, and caring environment: our teachers and assistants personally know all 140 of our Manor House students and continually strive to make them feel loved, valued, and appreciated. We hear time and again from our new families that they feel welcomed and instantly part of our Villa community.

Our two new Toddler classes have been met with high demand. These young children, who have only been on this Earth for two short years, are introduced to the concept of school in a cheerful and nurturing setting. In

addition to early foundational academic skills such as number and color recognition, they are learning to communicate and socialize with peers and adults, follow directions, sing songs, engage in creative and meaningful art projects, enhance fine and gross motor skills, and be part of our Villa family.

Academically, our Preschool students receive a top-notch educational foundation. Our experienced teachers plan every aspect of standards-based classroom learning with activities correlating to our curriculum — whether a student is learning letter sounds as a precursor to reading or painting at the easel to strengthen hand muscles. Teachers monitor expectations and ensure students are on track using measurements such as Preschool Early Literacy Indicator (PELI) and comprehensive progress reports.

In the spirit of developing the whole child, St. Ursula Villa emphasizes not only social-emotional growth and spiritual awareness, but self-help skills, confidence, and respect for others and self — all in addition to academics. We are committed to establishing a foundation where these precious children grow to be life-long learners and ultimately valuable contributors to society.

Sincerely,

Lisa Wolfer, Early Childhood Director

HIGHLIGHTS & HAPPENINGS

We are proud to offer several distinguishing program features:

• Our Preschool students experience the same weekly “specials” taught by our Main School faculty, creating school-wide continuity. Mr. Magoto and Ms. Loflin teach weekly Art and Music classes in designated Early Childhood classrooms. Ms. Hake leads developmentally-appropriate games and physical exercise in the Main School Gym. Ms. Hall reads stories and helps students check out their very own books in the Main School Library. Students engage in Outdoor Education projects and activities with Ms. Berting, which tie into our historic campus and Nature Trails.

• Our lunch extension option gives our half-day students an extra hour to stay for lunch and recess every day, which provides socialization with peers from both Montessori and Traditional classrooms. This option helps foster a smooth and cohesive social transition when both programs merge in the 1st grade.

• Through our Healthy Eating Initiative, we encourage our young students to develop and maintain healthy habits and healthy bodies. We offer fresh fruits and vegetables for weekly snack and encourage children to eat their “healthies” first at lunch. Students stay active even in inclement weather in the lower level Muscle Room, a major benefit during these winter months, allowing students to simultaneously expend energy and work on gross motor development.

• This year, our Ursuline Identity theme is: “With the help of God, you will do much good for others.” Our Early Childhood teachers’ daily interactions with their students foster spiritual growth as they learn about the Gospels through the Stories of God’s Love series.

St. Ursula Villa’s admissions events provide excellent opportunities for prospective parents to learn more about the Villa’s programs at November Informational Coffees and a January All-School Open House. These events, which have welcomed more than 500 attendees during the 2015-2017 admissions cycles, develop awareness of the Villa’s outstanding educational offerings, build strong demand for program openings, and showcase St. Ursula Villa’s campus improvements.

November Informational Coffees allow prospective parents to observe morning classes in session for both Early Childhood and Main School programs. The Sunday All-School Open House allows interested parents and students to meet Villa teachers, spend time in classrooms, and learn about our school, including STEM Enrichment, Villa Parents Organization, Foreign Languages, After-Care, Outdoor Education, and Campus Ministry/Ursuline Identity. Our Villa parent volunteers serve as enthusiastic tour guides and event hosts, providing valuable insight on their own families'

experiences at St. Ursula Villa. Surveyed attendees shared their impressions including: “The staff was extremely courteous and informative, the parent volunteers were very kind, and seeing everything made me very excited to be a part of St. Ursula Villa in the future!” and “My husband and I had very high expectations before visiting St. Ursula Villa. However, after the tour and info session, you have far exceeded our expectations.”

Junior High students’ involvement in these events helps our guests understand how poised, articulate, and confident students become as they progress through the Villa’s grades. In the words of one visitor: “Everyone was extremely friendly. It was impressive to have a member of the eighth grade class be our tour guide. It shows how well prepared they are.”

St. Ursula Villa’s recent campus renovations have not only impressed prospective parents but have also enabled the Villa to accommodate very high demand for Toddler, Traditional Preschool, and Montessori programs which have enjoyed at-capacity enrollment for the last several years. Of note: 89% of 2016-17 Villa first graders rose from the Manor House classrooms – supporting the recent trend of Early Childhood students continuing their Villa educational journey through graduation.

St. Ursula Villa facilitates successful transition from the Manor House to the Main School through “Crossing the Bridge” parent sessions which include classroom visits, information about new routines and expectations, and discussion about important developmental milestones. Transitioning students benefit from “Fly-Up Day” in May when they visit new teachers and classrooms for the upcoming year.
