Established in 1985, LUMS is ranked in the top 200 uni-versities in Asia. The university is recognised for its edu-cational excellence and is ranked second in Pakistan in the international QS World University Rankings for the year 2014.

LUMS was established by sponsors from the country’s major private and public sector corporations. Thesesponsors were aware of the need for a national university which would provide rigorous academic and intellectual education, at par with the leading universities around the world.
The last three decades have seen an accelerated rate of development in almost every direction. Keeping in mind the national and international needs and trends, educa-tion has been kept current and relevant. As new areas of study and research emerged, so too have relevant Uni-versity departments, schools and research centres, and with them new teaching courses.
History
Lahore Fort
Situated on the banks of the River Ravi, Lahore, Paki-stan’s second largest city is the historical, cultural and educational capital of the country. Founded in legend-arytimesandthecapitalofthePunjabprovinceforovera thousand years, Lahore has seen the comings and go-ingsofmanykings,emperorsandrulersfromdifferentcultures and backgrounds. Lahore has absorbed these diverseinfluencesachievingauniquesenseofhistory.
The city is famous for its historical landmarks. The La-hore Fort, Badshahi Mosque and Gurdwara are a testa-ment to the Mughal and Sikh legacy of the city. The Mall Road is famed for its colonial buildings from the British Raj,whilethemoremodernareasofGulbergandDe-fence feature shopping malls, cinemas, restaurants and more. Other places of interest are the mausoleum of Emperor Jehangir, Pearl and Golden mosques, the tomb ofRanjitSinghandtheWazirKhanmosque.Lahore’smuseum, which features in Rudyard Kipling’s Kim, is among the most noted in the East. The old walled city, with its narrow cobble-stoned streets and old houses, is a museum in itself.
Lahore is also the centre of Pakistani higher education. TheUniversityofthePunjab,GovernmentCollege,Kin-nairdCollegeandKingEdwardMedicalCollegearejustsome of the oldest and most prestigious schools in the country. Other medical schools, arts colleges and more can be found dotting the city landscape.

The people of Lahore like to claim that “One who has not seen Lahore has not lived.” Lahoris are friendly, gen-erousandhospitable,andtheirzestforlifeandfoodiswell-known. Accordingly, the city is famed for its wide variety and styles of foods. Food streets at Gawalmandi andPuraniAnarkaliare twogood junctions for tradi-tionalfooddishes,whilerestaurantsandcafesofferingcontinental as well as local dishes, can be found at M. M. Alam Road, Gulberg and at Y-Block, Defence Housing Authority.
Lahore has a host of social activities on-going all year round,which includearts and crafts exhibitions, filmand literature festivals, music concerts and much more. Sports enthusiasts can watch hockey or cricket matches at the Gaddafi Stadium. Bowling alleys and paintballarenas can also be found around the city. Clubs such as the Gymkhana and the Royal Palm Golf and Country Club, provide opportunities for recreation in the form of sports facilities, cafes and restaurants.

LUMS also offers a wide array of executive coursesthrough the Rausing Executive Development Centre (REDC), which was established with support from the Rausing family of Sweden. Since its inception the centre
hasmaintained itspositionasoneof thefinest insti-tutesofferingexecutiveeducationinPakistan.
In addition to the academic programmes, the Univer-sity conducts research funded by various multilateral agencies, industry and government. Active research keeps the faculty in touch with the current business en-vironment and enables them to gauge future directions. Research initiatives are also conducted under several research centres.
The excellent faculty at LUMS includes 168 PhDs from someof theworld’s finest institutions, such as Cam-bridge, Oxford, MIT, Berkley, Harvard and Stanford, among others. Regular involvement with internation-al conferences and publications keeps LUMS faculty abreast of global education trends. Moreover, eminent visiting scholars further diversify and enrich the learn-ing experience at LUMS. LUMS aspires to be a leading think-tank known internationally not only for the dis-semination of knowledge, but also for the creation of new ideas and innovations that would have a positive impact on society. The University’s ambitious attitude towards research means that it is constantly investing in world-class facilities. The importance of research is highlighted by the number of grants generated in re-search funding each year. The University is also com-mitted to ensuring that academic research and learning are not two separate bodies. The research conducted guides learning and ensures that it is up-to-date and relevant.
Faculty & Research Excellence
The university campus, spread over 100 acres, includes excellent on campus accommodation, world class sports facilities, a state-of-the-art library, a variety of diningfacilitiesandmuchmore.Studentsalsobenefitfrom a diverse student body. There are four residential colleges which comprise of ten residential buildings.
