has given l u Mob shows set in Al lan-tic a t y (Boardwalk Empire). Las Vfegas (Vegat). M i a m i (Magic Cily). SauaaUto ( i W Widow) and Ghicsgo (TTie Mob Doctor), not to mention

the Mob plots that even-I tually wind their way I through most any series

i the New York/New I Jersey environs. And

now, thanks to TNT, we take a three-week. LA. Confidential-Kyle t r ip to Los Angeles circa 1947, a noir worid wliere men are tough and women are trouWe. Oh. and as i t is the land of noir. the dark streets ate always wet and glistening which may strike you as odd in a city with an l i t t le rain, but not odd enough to tarid your attention.

Meaning yes, you've seen it all before.

Granted, mobsters are enlieiKhed in our national folklore, and every

series that touches upon them cannot be expected to reach the artistic bar set by TTie Sopranos. But unless j o u have something new to add to the tale, why bother to retell it?

Written, directed and produced by Frank Darabont, who's apparently

still smarting over his ouster f rom TTie Walking Dead. Mob CUy quickly divides its denizens among the good, the bad and the uncommitted. On the hero side of this fact-based story, you have Police Chief BiU T h e Boy Scout" Parker (Neal McDonough).

On the Mob side, you have famous gangsters Bugsy Siegel (Ed Burns) and Mickey Cohen (Jeremy Luke), with Mi lo VenUmiglia and Robert Knepper playing supporting henchmen. And i n the middle, you haw ITie Walking Deatfs Jon Bemlhal as a

conJlicled cop and Alexa Davaios as the requisite moll on the make.

The connections between them are purposely obscured as tonight's premiere gets underway. But by the t ime the two hours are over, secrets wi l l be revealed and links wil l become dear. Or at least clearer.

I f Bernthal is a bit blank i n the early going it's what the plot requires of him: He's the seerets-keeper-in-chief. And while Burns and Knepper provide some fun in two of the show's flashier roiefc keep your eyes on M c D o n o u ^ : There's never been a show he hasn't made more interesting amply by being in i t

From its smoky nightclubs to its fleabag diws, there's no doubt Mob Cily looks good.
