Abstract
Fire Mark Collection,
1891-current.
3.3 linear feet and 85 fire marks
Fire marks, invented in London in 1680, were used by fire insurance companies to
distinguish the properties they insured from the properties insured by others. They
were metal plates posted on the outside of buildings and were popular until the
late 19th century when municipal fire departments replaced most private fire
brigades. Today, fire marks are valuable collectors’ items with clubs such as the
Fire Mark Circle (FMC) and the Fire Mark Circle of the Americas (FMCA)
devoted to the hobby. This collection consists of fire mark specimens and related
materials, such as books, pamphlets, and clippings on fire mark history and
collecting, and materials from the FMC and FMCA.
Subjects: Fire insurance marks; Fire insurance—History.; Fire Mark Circle (Great
Britain); Fire Mark Circle of the Americas; Fire insurance marks – collectors and
collecting; Fire Mark Collection (Davis Library); Bulau, Alwin

Historical Note
It was in 1666 that the Great Fire of London inspired Dr. Nicholas Barbon to establish the first
modern fire insurance company, which he called the Fire Office. Soon after the Fire Office was
established, they also formed a brigade of firemen that was responsible for protecting the
property that the Fire Office insured. During this time, countless other fire insurance companies
were established and created their own brigades. In order for the Fire Office to be able to
distinguish the properties they insured from the properties insured by others, they developed fire
marks, which were lead plates marked with a phoenix. The mark was posted in a prominent spot
on each property insured by the Fire Office, so that it would be seen when the fire brigade
arrived. Following suit, other insurance companies created their own fire marks, each with a
unique design.1
Despite catching on quickly in England, fire marks did not come into use in America until 1752.
It was then that the Philadelphia Contribution for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire,
founded under the guidance of Benjamin Franklin, began using fire marks in Philadelphia. As in
England, other companies soon formed and created their own fire marks.2
Fire marks generally fell out of use in the late nineteenth century with the organization of
municipal fire departments, although some insurance companies continued to produce them as a
form of advertising.3 People began collecting fire marks in the early twentieth century. The Fire
Mark Circle was founded in 1934 in England and is the largest and most active fire mark
collector’s club, and the Fire Mark Circle of America was founded as an offshoot in 1973.
