Ethan was from California, but we were living together in New York. It was winter, he was homesick, so I madeup a California interior, draped him in fresh flowers, and had him sit for this painting.

I designed a logo and printed t-shirts for my gym, CrossFit Shadyside. I chose a thick, geometric font and stacked the words to give the logo solidity. CrossFit uses a kettlebell which is Russian in origin, and the font and red star are suggestive of a Soviet-era superpower.

I wanted to make art that dealt with how sick I felt while living with undiagnosed Celiac disease. A colorless rainbow emerges from objects painted to look like sacks of flour. The colorless rainbow is a bummer and the clouds, normally weightless, appear heavy and rigid.

I cut and assembled bits from my childhood baseball card collection. I wanted to hybridize the differentstyles and eras of cards. The result was a series of cards that looked both familiar and menacing.

This wall painting was in response to a prompt to make a two-dimensional, temporary work of art in eight hours. I started with a tiny collage, then made this large wall painting. I imagine this piece even larger and seen from a great distance.

I started a dance party called Tongue and Groove. The name was general enough that it encompassed any gender identity, but it was also erotic and suggestive-crucial for any LGBTQ dance party. Freddie Mercury, his partner and hairstylist Jim Hutton, and theircat graced our first flyer.

I dreamed that Pittsburgh was chosen to have a NWSL (National Womens Soccer League) team called the Pittsburgh Fortress FC. I designed a flag, logo, and fabric swatch for the Fortress. I wanted the color scheme to incorporate black and yellow, and I wanted the logo to be elemental like the Steelers hypocycloids. This logo is made of a pentagon and a hexagon, the two shapes that form the soccer ball.

My studio wall is covered in curated and collected images, postcards, pins, and bits of paper. These collections help me generate content and ideas and inspire me to create new work.

I made a series of drawings of an imagined desert island. Island inhabitants built large-scale letterforms to spell out words to communicate with passing ships. Shipwrecked currency abounds, but has no value on the island, and when inhabitants become angry they spit coins at each other.

I was invited to make a temporary art installation for an empty swimming pool. For this installation, I wanted to make a newly-bounded, displaced basketball court. I custom made tongue and groove flooring and laid it in thebottom of the pool. I scrambled the boundaries of a basketball court-sideline, half-court, free-throw line-and superimposed them. I attached a quilting hoop to the court at the intersection of the boundaries, creating a space for a new game.
