Preface

We are pleased to present the proceedings from the Astronomy at High Angular Resolution 2011 Thecentral kiloparsec in galactic nuclei conference The conference took place in the Physikzentrum ofthe Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) Bad Honnef Germany from 28 August to 2 September2011 It was the second conference of this kind following the Astronomy at High Angular Resolutionconference held in Bad Honnef three years earlier in 2008

The main objective of the conference was to frame the discussion of the broad range of physicalprocesses that occur in the central 100pc of galactic nuclei In most cases this domain is difficult toprobe through observations This is mainly because of the lack of angular resolution the brightness ofthe central engine and possible obscurations through dust and gas which play together in the centralregions of host galaxies of galactic nuclei within a broad range of activity The presence of large amountsof molecular and atomic (both neutral and ionized) gas dust and central engines with outflows and jetsimplies that the conditions for star formation in these regions are very special and probably differentfrom those in the disks of host galaxies

Numerous presentations covering a broad range of topics both theoretical and experimental thoserelated to research on Active Galactic Nuclei and on a wide range of observed wavelengths were submittedto the Scientific Organizing Committee Presentations have been grouped into six sessions

bull The nuclei of active galaxiesbull The Galactic Centerbull The immediate environment of Super Massive Black Holesbull The physics of nuclear jets and the interaction of the interstellar mediumbull The central 100pc of the nuclear environmentbull Star formation in that region

The editors thank all participants of the AHAR 2011 conference for their enthusiasm and their numerousand vivid contributions to this conference We would especially like to thank John Hugh Seiradakis fromthe Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece for giving the dinner talk on the most astounding ancientAntikythera mechanism We would also like to thank Victor Gomer and the staff of the Physikzentrumof the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft in Bad Honnef where the conference took place Last butnot least we would like to thank all unnamed helpers without whom the organisation of this conferencewould not have been possible

Financial support for this conference was granted by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)Sonderforschungsbereich project number SFB 956 We also acknowledge support from the EuropeanCommunity Framework Programme 7 Advanced Radio Astronomy in Europe grant agreement no227290
