Panelists: Elliott Barnes, Patrick Frey, Martha Kirszenbaum, Nicolas Libert, Emmanuel Renoird

Since the early 20th century, the cultural and creative allure that binds Paris to Los Angeles has evolved and deepened. For years Americans have journeyed to the City of Light, enthralled by its beauty and history; inspired by its art, architecture and style. What’s new now is an ardent return of affection from Parisians obsessed with all things L.A. From abundance of light and space, to diversity of lifestyle, culture and geography, to a relaxed West Coast sensibility, the L.A. influence is attracting visionary expats and Paris-based luxury brands seeking the freedom to redefine convention while transforming the city’s fashion, culinary, art and design scenes.

Addressing the Franco/L.A. fixation, The Hollywood Reporter’s Contributing Culture Editor Degen Pener leads a Parisian panel of internationally recognized product, art and design innovators, including Pierre Frey’s President and Creative Director Patrick Frey, interior designer Elliott Barnes, art and design purveyors/patrons Nicolas Libert and Emmanuel Renoird and curatorial director Martha Kirszenbaum, exploring the creative, commercial and cultural connectivity that influences these sister cities.

Reception to follow at Kneedler|Fauchère, Suite B600.

RSVP required at pdcfallmarket.eventbrite.com

THE WALK TO ELSIE’SPresented by Hutton Wilkinson

Author Hutton Wilkinson presents an illustrated tale of irrepressible joy amidst loss, determined rebirth, self-invention and most importantly, continuance in his new novel of historic fiction The Walk To Elsie’s, co-authored with Flynn Kuhnert. Based on the true story of Elsie de Wolfe’s last ten years and the first ten of Tony Duquette’s career, Wilkinson shares first-hand knowledge entrusted to him by Duquette about the design icon’s friendship with The First Lady of American Design. Wilkinson will carry his audience on a lavish adventure across the United States and Europe between the years 1941 and 1951, as young Tony becomes Elsie de Wolfe’s last great protégé. Wilkinson’s talk, like the book, will be peopled with the most glamorous globetrotters of the day, including Cole Porter, Billy Haines, Vincente Minnelli, Judy Garland, Christian Dior, Doris Duke, the Windsors, and dozens more, all of whom Wilkinson will bring to life for his audience!

Cocktail reception to follow at Ralph Pucci International, Suite B203.

RSVP required at pdcfallmarket.eventbrite.com

The Walk To Elsie’s, a limited, luxury edition of 1000 numbered sets, is available for pre-sale at amazon.com and can be pre-ordered from the author on the day of the PDC keynote.

Reception: Thursday, November 12, 5:00 - 9:30 PMPacific Design Center (PDC)Blue Building: Lobby & Second Floor8687 Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood, CA

designLAb is pleased to announce its new fall season with exciting new art and design exhibitions that open with a public reception on Thursday, November 12 from 5:00 - 9:30 PM. Sixteen exhibitions will be on view in the Pacifi c Design Center’s Blue Building Lobby and Second Floor with happy hour (cash bar) at Red Seven, located on the fi rst fl oor of the Green Building.

Highlights include three sculpture installations in the Blue Lobby on view through July 29, 2016: Proposal for New Landscapes by one of Japan’s most important contemporary artists, Nobuo Sekine, a retrospective by acclaimed Italian architect/designer Antonio Pio Saracino and recent work by LA-based artist Matt Johnson.

On the second fl oor above the Blue Lobby, thirteen new gallery exhibitions open to include Kevin Cheng’s interactive The Distance Between Stars at 4 A.M. and Industry’s Art With Heart to benefi t the Friend Movement, an anti-bullying organization.

BLUE LOBBY EXHIBITSOn view through July 29, 2016

Proposal for New Landscapes: Nobuo SekineNobuo Sekine’s Proposal for New Landscapes is a presentation of the artwork Phase of Nothingness—Black (1977–78), a series of sculptures that contrast the natural and man-made. The asymmetric arrangement of these disparate forms, from sprawling masses that lie low to the fl oor to geometric shapes that stand tall like totems, recall Zen rock gardens. Although they are made of black fi berglass, at fi rst glance these works could be mistaken for stone, glass, metal, or plastic. This exploration of ambiguity is consistent in Sekine’s practice, as he perceives form, matter, and space as infi nitely malleable.

Nobuo Sekine is one of the key members of Mono-ha, a group of Japanese artists in the late 1960s and 1970s who set themselves apart from mainstream art practice and employed raw materials such as stone, wood, paper, fabric, sand and iron. Thanks to his participation in several critically acclaimed museum and gallery exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C., Blum & Poe in Los Angeles, and Gladstone Gallery in New York, his work is now being embraced in the United States.

Matt Johnson: Lautner BeamsFeatured prominently in the Blue Lobby are four works by Matt Johnson (b. 1978), from his series titled Lautner Beam / Super String. Johnson created these works using repurposed cast-off s from John Lautner’s demolished Shusett House that translate as rustic, metaphysical visualizations of string theory, the forms hypothesized to describe matter itself. Cast in steel from the arched beams of Lautner’s modernist structure, they are reworked into trompe-l’oeil, elegant forms.

Matt Johnson lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore and his MFA from University of California, Los Angeles. His work is represented by Blum & Poe, Los Angeles/New York/Tokyo and 303 Gallery, New York.

Antonio Pio Saracino: RetrospectiveA retrospective by designer, architect and artist Antonio Pio Saracino (b.1976) examines the relationships among his product design, architecture and public art projects. Saracino has completed numerous public art projects and monuments internationally, most notably a recent public project for Manhattan’s Bryant Park curated by Helen Varola. Included are his designs such as a maquette for his current Hero project at the Accademia in Florence, the Hexa Lounge and information about his recent public art projects. By employing new technologies, sustainable principles, and creative thinking, Saracino pursues innovative design on every scale and explores the relationship between the natural and man-made world. For information regarding Saracino please contact Industry Gallery, B270 at 888 325-0420.

NEW PERMANENT ACQUISITIONS (VIEW BY APPT ONLY)

PDC is home to a large collection of contemporary art and includes commissioned site-specifi c works that address PDC’s formal architectural design and its natural panoramic surrounding.

Mobile n°3 (Music), a new monumental work by renown French artist Xavier Veilhan hangs nine feet above the ground and compels the viewer to look up at PDC’s impressive interior space. The mobile, which spans about 15 feet high is composed of thirty fl oating spheres which evoke the music and soundtrack of our time. Veilhan off ers us a visual translation of our auditory environment, making visible our hypermodern and increasingly artifi cial aural world, which, without intervention, can often go unnoticed and unconsidered. The artist provides a visual reminder that our lives are suff used with sounds of our own design. Another Veilhan ceiling installation entitled Hong Kong Mobile No. 9, 2013 which is 9 feet high also hangs in the private offi ce of PDC owner Charles S. Cohen. Location: Green Lobby.

Erwin Redl’s commissioned, animated, large-scale light installations for the Red Building’s Motor Court and Sky Lobbies provide a digital experience that also sensationalize PDC’s soaring red, blue and green corporeal presence. Redl has interpreted the motor court as a dramatic three-dimensional cinematic environment. His new light installation, HORIZON, along the long curved glass wall acts as an epic background panorama. CUBES, on the traffi c island is the companion actor in the motor court’s spatial spectacle. Both installations’ light sequences are synchronized and create a dazzling scene leading into the Red Building. In addition to the Motor Court, Redl also created two large computer-controlled RGB LED ceiling installations for the East and West Sky Lobbies entitled Formations and Stalactites. Location: Red Building.

Gerardo Hacer (b. 1976), a Los Angeles artist and former assistant to Ellsworth Kelly and Jeff Koons, created two bright, large-scale green origami-inspired installations entitled The Fold: Mountain and The Fold: Valley that playfully rhyme the Red Building terrace’s vast view of sky, mountains and water. Born to Mexican-American teenage gang members and raised in a series of foster homes, Hacer’s use of origami’s infi nite formal language has helped to reshape his past as he transforms his small fragile paper forms into large-scale poetic steel sculptures. Location: Red Building Terrace.

Three life-size hand-welded, painted carbon and steel sculptures entitled Totems by Antonio Pio Saracino (whose retrospective is on view in the Blue Lobby) are a study of prismatic shapes and light that constantly shift to off er varying tonal variations of the same color. Echoing the PDC’s three-color architectural dynamic, each work is painted in diff erent shades of red, blue or green and recall the buildings’ mystifying play of light and perception between two and three-dimensional space. Location: Red Building Terrace.

Veilhan, Redl, Hacer and Saracino join several other internationally recognized artists whose work is prominently displayed in Pacifi c Design Center’s Red Building offi ces such as Bharti Kher, Doug Aitken, Daniel Firman, Kaz Oshiro, Gregor Hildebrandt, Wim Delvoye, Guy Limone, Phillippe Decrauzat, Paula Scher and Peter Zimmermann.

Pacifi c Design Center’s art collection may be viewed during business hours by calling PDC to arrange an appointment.

NOW IN THEATRES

The New GirlfriendFrom visionary director François Ozon (8 Women, Swimming Pool) comes this one-of-a-kind gender-bending melodrama that evokes the eye-popping visuals of Pedro Almodóvar, Alfred Hitchcock and Brian De Palma. THE NEW GIRLFRIEND tells the tale of soft-spoken Claire, who mourns the loss of her best friend Laura. When Claire comes across Laura’s husband David (Romain Duris) dressed head-to-toe in his late wife’s clothes, she becomes seduced by David’s beautiful new incarnation, Virginia. As the two become inseparable, Claire wonders whether she is falling for Virginia, or perhaps a part of Laura’s resurrected soul. The New Girlfriend pays homage to classic cinema - from Rebecca to All About My Mother - while injecting its own brand of sensual, sometimes sinister, eroticism.
