Baker Tops Tamboer To W i n "Centennial Open" David Baker was forced to "pull it out of the fire" in defeating Marines

Tamboer (11 time Kansas State champion) of Wichita, Kansas in a one-game playoff. Tamboer was undefeated going into the last round of the eight-man A Class round robin, while Baker of nearby Wentworth, Missouri had dropped a game to Andy Mogus (7 time Oklahoma State champion) of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Baker came up with back-to-back wins for the crown. Ramon Car-ver, manager of the tournament distributed $90.00 in cash and $156 in tro-phies to the 16 pitchers in A and B. The cash was given by the Centennial Committee, Earl Staponski, chairman and the trophies were sponsored by friendly local businesses . . . six contacts and six sales. The NHPA emblem was in evidence everywhere in the court area including a two-foot job done on the tow-target for aircraft. Pitchers and fans alike were awed by the beauty of the trophy displays The crowds drawn to the downtown site, with woven-wire fences across the street, restrained the jaywalkers, while four portable courts made ringers hard to get. A grand two days for horseshoe. The city of Lamar in Missouri furnished the courts without charge, thanks to Bill Moritz.

In Memoriam Vernon J. Fuller, 581305 E. Michigan Ave., Battle Creek, died August 19th

at Battle Creek Community Hospital. He had been hospitalized since July 30th, when stricken by a severe heart attack. He had been employed nearly 30 years by Eaton, Yale and Towne, as a machine repairman in the valve division.

Surprisingly enough, many of Vern's achievements were in the field of bowl-ing, something most of us were unaware of. Back in 1955-56, in particular, he bowled in as many as five different leagues. The Battle Creek Drewery's team won the City Championship and Vern consistently carried well over a 200 average. In 1956, he had the high city series score of 664, with games of 216-246-202. Another time he had a 661 city high with games of 204-222-235. He went on to attain high National honors in the American Bowling Congress (A.B.C.) event at Chicago with 1805 actual pins in 9 games. He also bowled in other National A.B.C. tournaments in St. Louis, Mo., Rochester, N. Y., Syracuse, N. Y. and Milwaukee, Wis., to name a few.

Vern received $1500.00 in suggestion improvement awards from Eaton, Yale and Towne. Other recognition included acceptance and use of horseshoe score board devices at the world NHPA championships at Fargo, North Da-kota, Erie, Pennsylvania and Keene, New Hampshire.

To his devoted wife, Elnora and family, the sincere sympathy of the Mich-igan State Association and that of the National Horseshoe Pitcher's Associa-tion is extended in her hour of sadness.

Frank Corbin, 59, of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, was killed in an auto-mobile accident August 19th on his return trip from Dauphin, Manitoba, where he had participated in the Canadian National Tournament. His wife was also killed in the accident.

Frank was a director on the committee of the Ontario Horseshoe Pitchers' Association and had been pitching for 40 years. He had made many friends in the horseshoe world both in the U. S. and Canada, and will be sadly missed.

Frank was a familiar figure at all Canadian tournaments and also was pres-ent at World tournaments and Eastern Nationals in Keene, N. H., Erie Pa., Greenville, Ohio and Muncie, Indiana. He was also a personal friend of NHPA secretary Bob Pence, whose son Jerry lives with Frank's brother in Hamilton.

To the family of Mr. and Mrs. Corbin we offer our deepest sympathy. Jj; jJ?

Adah M. Overholser, 73, wife of a longtime Indiana player, Lora Overholser, died of a heart attack last August. They had been married 56 years and had seven children, three boys and four girls.

Her husband, Lora, is still active in horseshoe and first pitched in the Ind-iana state tournament in 1923, 47 years ago, at which time he was one of the top players in the state.

The NHPA and the Indiana Association extends their deepest feelings of sympathy to the Overholser family.

Curt Day And Elmer Hohl Co-Champions Of Greenville, Ohio Ringer Classic

Curt Day, Frankfort, Indiana and Elmer Hohl, Wellsley, Ontario, both for-mer World Champions, ended in a rather unprecedented tie for first place honors in Class A pitching during the Darke County Horseshoe Club's annual Ringer Classic at the City Park courts.

Going into the final game between the two ace ringer-makers, Hohl had a 13-1 mark, Day 14-0. A playoff was in the offing when Hohl defeated Day 51-30, but a mainline decision was made by the men. Fatigue throughout the long weekend which had seen a record smashing 233 pitchers compote in no less than 29 classes, prompted the men to first offer to settle the matter with a toss of a coin to avoid another game at nearly midnight. Further discussion resulted in the decision to consider the result a tie with each man being awarded $125 prize money and the right to compete in the 1971 Ringer Classic without having to qualify. The trophy was given to Hohl who had qualified with a higher ringer percentage than any other, and who pitched 84.3% for the entire tournament compared to 82.8% for Day. As defending champion Day did not have to qualify.

Ruth Hangen of Buffalo, New York defended her Women's championship by going undefeated in 5 games and throwing 76.8% ringers. Mark Seibold of Indiana is the Boys' Junior champion going undefeated in a tough field of six. He threw 75.9% ringers for the tourney.

Men and women came from all over the Midwest area — 194 men and 12 women — 22 boys and 5 girls. It took 82% ringers to qualify for Class A competition. Pop Johnson of Cincinnati just made the cutoff with 263 points and 82% while Elmer Hohl was high with 285 points and 93%.

Eleven states plus Canada were represented. It took until 3:00 a.m. on Sun-day morning to complete the first day's competition.

Woody Martin In Big Win Over Ray Martin In Champaign, Illinois, Labor Day

Woody Martin overcame a big 27 to 3 deficit early in the game to overtake Ray Martin 32 to 31. Battling back strong, Ray tied the score 48 to 48. Woody, looking like a true champion keeping the pressure on, went out two frames later with a double. The game went 100 shoes.

This was the first tournament the Champaign-Urbana Horseshoe Club has held. Although newly organized, the members worked very hard to make it a great success. We are looking forward to having new courts for a bigger and even better tournament next year.

The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest / October, 1970

Elmer Hohl 1970 Champion Of Dominion Of Canada A ringing sound broke the stillness of the atmosphere, and folks, both young

and old, stood up and cheered. It was another ringer. Some 2,500 curious spectators went through the Dauphin Memorial Com-

munity Centre turnstile here on the weekend to witness the Canadian horse-shoe championships and the top pitchers from coast to coast.

A total of 118 competitors battled it out in the event. While two-time world champion Elmer Hohl of Wellesley, Ont., walked off

with the Canadian crown, local hero Bert Snart also drew some accolades. However, as far as horseshoe circles go, Snart was not a forgotten man.

For his many years of contribution to the game, Snart received a special award from the Manitoba government, and he was named "Mr. Horseshoe 1970."

"It came as a real surprise to me, but it sure was a happy occasion." ex-pressed Snart.

At a banquet Saturday evening, at least one horseshoe pitcher from each province represented rose to congratulate and thank the Dauphin committee for what many referred to as, "the best championships ever."

It was the first time the national horseshoe championships had ever been decided outside Ontario, and for the first time there was a great representa-tion from the West.

Some of the dignitaries present at Canadian National. Left to right: Adams, Pence, Snart, Pakota and Hohl.

The new champion, who won the Bert Snart Trophy donated by the Dauphin Horseshoe Club for Canadian Horseshoe Association competition, easily won all nine of his games, and he had a 76 per cent ringer average.

26 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest / October, 1970

Canadian Horseshoe by R. G. Pence, NHPA Secretary

Following the World tournament in California, it was the pleasure of my wife and I to take a vacation trip through the beautiful Candadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and to end the trip by attending the Canadian National Horseshoe championships played in Dau-phin, Manitoba.

This was an unusual and highly successful tournament. Played indoors on a ten court layout of portable courts in a hockey arena with more than ample seating. The Dauphin Horseshoe Club of Manitoba did a wonderful job of pro-moting, organizing and conducting the event. Bert Snart of the Dauphin club and his cohorts and the city of Dauphin worked hard and long and should be congratulated.

This was the first truly Canadian National tournament for it marked the first time the event was held outside the province of Ontario and the Toronto area and the first time the tourney had a comprehensive entry list coming from all parts of Canada.

The tournament in Dauphin attracted players from one end of Canada to the other and was the first time that Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia players competed. It was a big entry list and the caliber of the players was excellent.

The important aspect was that for the first time players from widely separ-ated areas met in both horseshoe competition and fellowship and became acquainted with each other and thereby laid the groundwork for a truly ef-fective organization in the future.

True the tournament itself had its problems as is only natural under the conditions. The entry list was much larger than anticipated and the playing schedule was too ambitious resulting in problems timewise. Lack of clay avail-able in the area made sand courts necessary and many of the players were unaccustomed to this. They were the best sand courts this writer has ever seen. In fact the composition was not really sand and was far superior to the ordinary sand courts. But it was not clay and this cut down the effectiveness of the players. Perhaps the stakes were too rigid with absolutely no give, but this can be corrected in the future and was far better than loose and wobbly stakes I have seen in some Canadian indoor tournaments in Ontario.

Many of the players had never participated in this type of round robin com-petition before which added to the problems of administration and caused de-lays in the time schedule. Scorekeeping details were taken care of in excel-lent fashion and visible scoring setups were provided on each court. The fiber glass portable containers of the courts were by far the best this writer has ever seen and were actually beautiful.

TV and radio coverage was excellent and the Manitoba Department of Tourism staged a dinner for the players and their families which was an af-fair to be long remembered by everybody.

Bud Prange, secretary of the Ontario Association, made the 1500 mile trip to Dauphin and worked hard and long with the Dauphin Club in the admini-strative details of the competition. It is this kind of cooperation that will build a strong Canadian Association in the future.

The good and outstanding aspects of the tournament far outweighed the problems encountered and all the problems are of the type that can be cor-rected in the future as a result of the experience gained.

An informal and unofficial meeting of key individuals from each of the six provinces represented at the tournament was held. The consensus of this meet-ing was that the Canadian Horseshoe Pitchers' Association should be re-or-ganized and an official constitution adopted along the same lines as the NHPA in the United States.

This setup would call for the players in each province to form a provincial association. Each province would thus arrange its own schedule of events and tournament but would do so in co-operation with the other provinces in the matter of schedule dates and the distribution of publicity and information.

The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest / October, 1970

Canadian Horseshoe — (Continued) The overall Canadian Horseshoe Pitchers' Association would hold an annual

meeting during the Canadian National Tournament each year and with all de-cisions and business conducted by voting delegates from each of the provin-cial associations. Membership would be a combined Provincial-National mem-bership, the Canadian National tournament would be moved from place to place each year in order to generate interest and participation.

The News Digest, monthly magazine published by the NHPA in the U. S. would be utilized as a means of communication and all members urged to be-come subscribers.

It is my hope and recommendation that all Canadian players vigorously follow up at once on the groundwork laid at the 1970 tournament in Manitoba.

Canadian National Exhibition Tournament A total of eighty-four horseshoe players participated in the Canadian Na-

tional Exhibition tournament at Toronto, Ontario on August 22, 1970. This was the largest group of players ever to play in this tournament. The tourna-ment was conducted in the Horse Palace on the Canadian National Exhibi-tion grounds and was witnessed by hundreds of spectators. Once again, all games in this tournament were played under the Schummer scoring system of counting ringers only, no cancellations and each contestant throwing fifty shoes only in each game. The winners of the classes were as follows:

Lloyd Potter Wins Hotly Contested Santa Rosa, Calif. Open

Lloyd Potter of the Santa Clara County Club won 13 of 15 games to claim the Sonoma County Fair championship at Santa Rosa. The annual 2-day 16-man affair was hotly contested and Lloyd seemed to lead a charmed life in the final games, but always had the necessary ringers when pressed to pull out the championship. Monte Latino placed second. Surprise of the tourney was San Francisco's Jack Seymour. Jack was in contention all the way to the final game and won 11 games to place fourth behind veteran Bill Weathers of Modesto. John Pratt of Sacramento was fifth and Santa Rosa's top pitcher, Mell Ristau, sixth. The weather was ideal, and the usual late afternoon gale came in as a pleasant cooling breeze. Tournament director, Bill Fulwider did an excellent job of coordinating the action and Erma Turner once again did her usual efficient statistician chore.

Bill Weathers "Weathers11 Inclement Weather To Win First Livermore, Calif. Open Title

It took a playoff win over tough Sacramentoan Monte Latino and very incle-ment weather before Bill Weathers could ascend the lofty first place pedestal at the Livermore Club's new 12-court layout in the Rodeo Grounds. Monte and Bill had each won 6 of 7 games before the hotly contested playoff decided the championship. Group II was won by Ruben Lee of Oakland's Arroyo Viejo Club. Ruben won all 7 games.
