Because there are so many players wanting to play pickleball and because there were virtually no places to play outdoor, many of our ambassadors and pickleball players across the country have approached their respective municipalities, cities, tennis and golf clubs to paint lines on tennis courts or create new pickleball exclusive courts. Congratulations to Pickleball Kelowna on the grand opening of your brand new 8 outdoor pickleball exclusive courts. Peter Darvill, Area Ambassador for Ladner, BC was probably the first to have success getting the local parks board to paint lines on newly paved tennis courts to allow either pickleball or tennis. Last year after our request to the City of Abbotsford, they also painted lines for 4 outdoor pickleball courts. There have been so many of these conversions happening across Canada. Pickleball is here to stay both indoor and outdoor. There are so many pickleball clubs and groups starting up in every province. There will continue to be great demand for more pickleball courts to accommodate the ever increasing number of players. Some of the recent ones include Parksville Golden Oldies Sports Association (PGOSA) in B.C. They started with 20 players this summer and within 3 weeks they had 86 players. They needed pickleball courts so the City of Parksville marked out six outdoor pickleball courts in the lacrosse box. Here are some more examples of tennis court conversions to dual purpose: 1. Congratulations Linda Brown, Area Ambassador for Salmon Arm BC on the Grand Opening of 4 outdoor pickleball courts at Club Shuswap Golf and RV on Aug. 13 which attracted 140 people when 45-50 were expected. 2. The City of Trail BC has designated one tennis court at Butler Park for four pickleball courts. 3. The two tennis courts at Westridge Park in Burnaby, B.C. are now lined for 8 pickleball courts. 4. The City of Parksville, B.C. has marked out pickleball lines on two tennis courts and six pickleball courts in the lacrosse box. 5. Kingsville Tennis Organization in Ontario has recently included pickleball. A group of pickleball volunteers have painted pickleball lines on 4 tennis courts. In the near future, they are proposing a name change to Kingsville Tennis & Pickleball Association. Great to see the cooperation between the pickleball and tennis groups! There are many more examples across the country, I am mentioning only a few. Thanks to all our Ambassadors and members who work tirelessly behind the scenes increasing the number of courts available, indoor and outdoor, for the ever increasing number of players. New Look for International Federation of Pickleball

Check out the new logo and web page for the IFP at www.ipickleball.orgBy reading through the new web page I learned just how valuable this

organization is to the advancement of pickleball and to preserving the original nature of the game.

Spain is the newest member of IFP along with India, USA and Canada. What potential there is forpickleball growth around the world! If you have not had the opportunity, take a look at the websites forIndia (All India Pickleball Association) and Spain. Some of youmay even travel to these countries in thenear future and join in a pickleball game.

Pickleball is alive and thriving inDartmouth, Nova Scotia!

Pickleball in Dartmouth startedwhen a couple of residents ofDartmouth discovered thisfascinating game being playeda 40 minute drive across the

city in Tantallon. We found out that we loved thegame, but disliked the long drive twice a week.

Deciding that this game was worth promotinglocally, we got financial support from our localcouncillor DarrenFisher, and facility support fromPeter Wightman, director of the East DartmouthCommunity Centre (EDCC). The EDCC groupstarted with 8 dedicated women signing up for 4Friday mornings, but it quickly grew to up to 25people of both sexes and various ages playingMonday mornings, Wednesday mornings andevenings, Friday mornings and Sundayafternoons. In June we hosted the Bridgewaterpickleball group forexerciseand lunch.Ourgroupmaintains an e-mail list of over 60 peoplewantingto be kept up on pickleball activities. For the firsttime pickleball will be played at the 55+Games inSeptember and some of the EDCC pickleballparticipants will be competing.Submitted by Regis Hill

Pickleball News from PEIFor the past two years wehave had Pickleball inFortune in an outdoor rink. However, this year....wehave created two newPickleball courts in the town

of Souris, PEI at the Souris Tennis Court area.We received a grant from Eastern Kings SportsCouncil which allowed us to purchase two newportable Pickleball nets. We then got togetherand painted lines for the two new courts. All Julyand August, we were fortunate to have KarlHanson and Pat Bear , who are seasonalresidents of PEI, put on Pickleball Clinics two

days a week. We now have approximately 14players who come out twice a week. If you cometo PEI, make sure you come for a visit and playwith us !Submitted by Garth Matthews , PEI Ambassador

The Town of Kingsville Ontario is a participant inthe Windsor-Essex 100 Mile Peninsula Club, aninitiative by surrounding municipalities toconvince retirees to relocate to this area. It maycome as a surprise therefore, that as of May 01st

of 2013, the game of pickleball was not beingplayed anywhere in Kingsville. Indeed, a couple

of initial phone calls revealedthat theKingsvilleParks&Rec.Dept. knew nothing of thegame, and the local tennis clubwanted nothing to do with thegame.

In the first week of May, a group of four of ussnowbirds started playing pickleball on theTown’s tennis courts. We initially used painter’stape to lay out our court markings, but that wastoo costly and very time consuming. So wequickly changed to homemade reusable rubberstrips which also proved to be time consumingand dangerous as players would sometimes tripover the markers. Thankfully no one wasseriously injured. Wordspreadquickly, andsoonour numbers doubled, then tripled. We beganplaying regularly, three mornings a week, attracting picklers from neighbouringcommunities. In an effort to lendourselves credibility, we namedour group “Kingsville Pickleball”,and created a Facebook page ofthe same name.

Around mid-June we feltestablished enough to solicitTown councilors, and theDirectorof the Kingsville Parks & Rec. Dept., forpermanent pickleball markings to be applied tothe tennis courts. During the months of June &July we made three separate presentations tothree different committee levels. We told the

panels about the history of Pickleball, why it is sopopular, and the benefits it can bring to the Townof Kingsville. We received positive feedback ineach case. It also helped that the localnewspaper ran an article detailing the growingpopularity of Pickleball. The only glitch weconfronted was some early opposition topermanent markings by members of the localtennisassociation, whichhadexclusionaryuseofthe courts at peak times. TheParks&RecreationProgram Manager arranged a meeting betweenthe tennis and pickleball groups. Cognizant ofthe history that many pickleball groups have hadwith tennis associations in North America, theKingsville picklers, lead by a small contingent, went into the meeting expecting a battle.Astonishingly, the tennis association supportedthe idea of having pickleball lines painted on thetennis courts, and even agreed to pay for therequiredmaterials. Wow!!! Thismust havebeena first. Many of the Kingsville Pickleball playersended up joining the tennis association, whichperhaps someday may come to be known as the“Kingsville Tennis & Pickleball Association” .

On August 3rd of 2013, a group of KingsvillePickleball members met at the tennis courts

ready for work. Usingchalk lines, painter’stape, and a gallon of‘Traffic Yellow’ paint weapplied the permanentlines to the fourKingsville tennis courts.Three hours later we hadfour new Pickleball

courts! We were tired & dirty, and had justenough energy left to give ourselves a ‘high-five’.The news of our (Continued on next page)

Recently we hadone of our busiest days todate, with all four courts inplay, and another fourplayerswaiting in rotation. Serendipitously, on thatsameday, wewere advised that Pickleball will nowbe included in theofficial activity guide for theTownof Kingsville. We see great potential for thecontinued growth of Pickleball in our town……andwho knows - maybe we’ll even get our own T-shirts!

Kingsville is now one of many places to playpickleball in the Windsor/Essex County area. Youare sure to get a good & friendly game in Kingsvilleas there are players of all ages and skill levels.

Pickleball is played Monday, Wednesday andFriday from 8:30 – 11:30 (weather permitting). The address is 1741 Jasperson Drive, Kingsville,Ontario, N9Y 3J4. Submitted by Wayne & Jude Halpertand Jules & Mary Kay.

BC Seniors GamesOver 3700 athletes came to the city of Kamloops to celebrate healthy competition in over 32 differentsports, showcasing that age is not a factor in leading an active, healthy life. The BC Seniors Games is anannual event (26 years) held by the BC Senior Games Society, who promote a healthy, active lifestyle atthe community level for all 55+ aged residents of BC. The sport of pickleball is a relatively new additionto the Games (2009) and continues to draw curious spectators and much exposure in both print and ontelevision. Skill ratings were used for the first time and games played over 3 days at the South KamloopsSecondary gyms. In 2012 there were 94 pickleball players registered and this year 154 players wereregistered. Pickleball players wish to thank the City of Kamloops for hosting the games, the BC SeniorsGames Society for organizing and giving us this opportunity and the Province of BC through the Ministryof Community, Sport and Cultural Development for financial support. Langley, BC will host the 2014Games in September. The following are the complete pickleball results.
