I hope everyone is having a great summer. Last month’s rain helped bring high temperatures down. Good for us and all the air cooled motors out there. Come out to a driving event or a meet & greet to mingle with your fellow members. This month has plenty of fun and exciting activities. Don’t let summer slip by. Although we are still having a lot of fun this year, we need to start planning for next year. This month we will form the nominating committee for this year’s election. This will decide the new PCA Roadrunner Region Board of Directors for 2014. Many of the current officer’s terms will expire in December and they will not be eligible to fill those posi-tions for another year. Consider taking a key position in your Porsche Club. Board positions in-clude President, Vice Presi-dent, Secretary, Treasurer, and 6 Member at Large posi-tions. There are also several specialty chair positions that are chosen by the board such as, Newsletter Editor, Fiesta Chair, Tech Chair, Webmaster, Social Chair, Goodie Store Chair, Charity Chair, Social Chair, Member-ship Chair, Head Steward, Safety Chair, Historian, Facebook Host, and other pos-sible positions that are needed. Most positions will be available for 2014. Talk to a current board member for more information. If you have a special skill that might help, let us know. Look for the nominating committee announcement and contact them to nominate someone special for this election. September 10th will be the nomination deadline. There is no need to be shy, let us

know about your interest to serve. 2014 will be here soon. Serving on the Roadrunner Region Board can be a very rewarding experience. It is a wonderful way to meet new people and make new friends, while adding new adventures to older friendships within the club. Help shape the Regions 47th year with new ideas and celebrating in traditional events. The ever exciting Deutsch-Marque Event returns from the 10th through the 12th. This is a full track driving experience weekend that you won’t soon forget. Instructors will be available to help sharpen your driv-ing skills. You can play it safe and choose the lapping group, or get very competitive and join the wheel to wheel groups. Between your sessions, you can enjoy watching others in their groups. This event will be sponsored by Porsche of Albuquerque, PMCI, Maurers Collision, and others. Contact Russ Kelso for more in-formation. We will also have a PCA booth at the track. If you are not driving the event, come by to watch and/or join in at the booth. For a more relaxing Porsche event, drive out to

Corrales for the traditional Corrales Round Up. Re-member that only Porsche cars will be allowed under the cottonwoods in the Porsche corral. Bring your camera for some nice car photos. Dave and Ann Stinchcomb will be our wonder-ful hosts. Back to the Die Series, how are your points adding up? This month’s autocross will be back at Air-port Parking on the 24th. Since this will be the second

time ever at this venue, a whole different course will be configured. We still need some experimentation at this new place, but that is what adds to the challenge of the Die Series. Continue enjoying the summer, and I wish you clean, smooth roads with high speed limits, and curves.

Chuck Stephens showed good form through the slalom at DS#7..We Need You!

Do you have an idea for an event that you’d like to see happen? Would you like to see more social or technical events? More racing? More family-oriented events? More events for Cayennes? Whatever it is, the best way to make it happen is to get involved. Sure, it’s a little bit of work, but it’s also a lot of fun with a great group of people who love the same thing you do: Porsches and Porsche-people! Don’t be afraid, get involved and help out your fellow Porsche advocates. Members may nominate any Active, Family Active, or Affiliate members, including themselves, with their permission, for any Board position, which includes President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, or Member-at-Large. There are six Members-at-Large. Members may contact anyone on the Committee by phone, letter, or email (although email is preferred) to make a nomination. The Chairperson of the Committee will obtain either oral or written acceptance from the nominee for the nomination – email will serve as written acceptance. The deadline for acceptance is September 10th, 2013, after which time the Chairperson will notify the Secretary of the nominations for each position. No member may be voted into a position more than twice in a row, so we have several members who are not eligible for certain positions. Check with the committee to determine those individuals.

Due to the need to vacate the premises by 3pm, an early wake up call was required for those that opted to take part in DS#7 for the Road Runner Region’s only 2013 visit to NAPA Speedway. A published set-up crew arrival time of 6:30am and a driver’s meeting at 8:15am meant none of the 23 participants that made it out to the track were going to be sleeping in. James Wilson, after a few pre-event revisions, arrived at a course layout which bor-rowed liberally from a course run previously this year by our SCCA brethren, while adding a higher speed section on the south loop to give all participants a chance to experience sections that were somewhat tight, somewhat more open, and a LOT MORE open. In other words, something for everyone. Being that there we had a small number of participants, a lot of cones used, and a large area to cover meant that course workers had their work cut out for them. A few drivers found cones out of place, and maybe one or two got

unexpected gifts from the cone fairy in the form of clean runs that were perhaps not so clean. Not much that can be done about that other than to get more members out to the track, and use a few less cones and perhaps a bit less track. Top time of day went to Rob Godiciu is his Subaru STi with an untouchable 105.282. Good driving, turbo power and 4WD does have its advantages. Eight tenths back was the always fast Jim Garton in his Shelby GT. I will skip ahead to 4th place overall, where Andrew McGibbon in his Honda 2000 clocked a 107.981. Very impres-sive, but even more so when one considers that Andrew’s time included 2 second cone penalty. Not quite enough for FTD, but his scratch time was good enough for a very solid second place overall. FTD among the Porsche contingent, and 3rd overall went to your humble scribe, taking the measure of his 911 C2’s recently stiffened sway bars with a 107.924. Next up was James Wilson with a time of 108.133, and Steve “no damn way

I was off course” Fallon with a 108.66. In fact, times were very tight in the top 10, with a total of 5 drivers in the 108’s, and 5th through 9th cov-ered by a scant 0.467 seconds. Rather than name names in the run down of Thank You’s where I will inevitably miss some-one, I will just say that if you were there, THANK YOU. With a small turn out, most everyone had to do double and maybe triple duty to make sure the event got off the ground and ran smoothly, and this event surely did. And lastly, a thank you to NAPA Speedway for hosting us, and also for opening the snack bar at lunch time. Cold drinks and hot food is always welcome when killing a few cones, even if no one saw that you did.

On July 13th, Patrick Farrell updated us on his 914-GT 6. Suspended on the rotisserie we saw a work in progress or better yet an evolving work of automotive art. The body work is com-plete, the custom fender flares blended in and bumpers finished. It’s been sandblasted, primed, finished off to a glass smooth surface and is ready for paint. The front and rear compartments, interior, engine bay and undersurface have been painted blue and the bed-liner and wheel-wells are cov-ered with a textured blue compound. Patrick’s custom suspension that includes raised struts to lower the car 19 mm is complete. The 3.2 L “Kelso” engine, specially geared transmission and limited slip are awaiting

installation. The interior will be basically stock and the Targa top will be removable. We saw a hand-built GT engine cover that is complete and ready for paint. Patrick discussed and demon-strated the fine points of hand finishing the body using a variety of homemade sanding blocks. After a walk around and a lively question-and-answer session, we left knowing that we had seen a very special, soon to be completed machine that will rival the original Porsche/VW factory 914-6 GT. Thank you again Patrick for a great tech session.

Standard Diner SocialSETTING THE STANDARDStory and Photos By Dennis Chamberlain

We returned to the Standard Diner in July after having a good affair there in 2012, and it seemed to be even more popular and appreciated this time around. The innovative and diversified menu included grilled chicken on a waffle..... yes, you are reading that correctly! I was told it was wonderful - a mix of breakfast and dinner all at the same time. It was so good, in fact, that neither Wil-lard MenNe nor Michael Galaviz offered to let me try a bite - can you imagine that? On the other hand, Heather Richard kindly gave me some of her sweet potato fries, having compassion upon observing that I was roaming around greeting the members without being able to order my dinner until later. This is a tough job but someone has to do it! The seating was tight due to seven people who arrived without an rsvp (more on that later) but the staff handled us with no problems. The final head count was 41. Hats off to owner

Cris deGregory for arranging everything, and to a wait staff that did a wonderful and efficient job. As always, I hope our members consider patron-izing the restaurants we attend for our meet and greet functions. As for the rsvp’s, I do want to impress upon everyone the importance of letting me know you are coming. I reserved space for 36, and seven more people showed up. Luckily, two who had reserved space couldn’t make it, so we were only over our head count by five. But had there been one more person I am not sure where we would have seated him. We have the Corrales Roundup coming up on August 18th from two to five - it’s one of our premier events of the year. Accordingly, there will not be a regular Meet and Greet function in August. The Roundup is at the home of Dave and Ann Stinchcomb in Corrales - we’ll be send-ing out more information on it soon. Hope to see you there!

In the Zone

Ah, where do I begin?! The month of June was jam-packed with Porsche activity and it was a GREAT way to start the summer! After just a couple of weeks of rest from co-chairing Fiesta New Mexico 2013, I headed to Colorado for the “Hell on Heels”, ladies only DE at a police track in Golden. Everyone had a lot of fun and I was impressed to see 2 Novice groups of drivers – part of the 60 drivers that day. The weather cooperated and a notable event was when a fawn was born right near the track. The EMT’s care-fully wrapped the fawn in a blanket and moved it well away from the track. After the event, everyone gathered at a local watering hole for Beer-thirty. The next day, I went to another annual RMR event – the Cerebral Palsy Concours d’Elegance, held at Arapahoe Com-munity College. The 30th anniversary of this event (founded by RMR members, Tom Scott and Stimson Kennedy) also celebrated 65 years of Porsche AG, the 60th anniversary of the very first Porsche own-ers club, and the 50th anniversary of the 911. I got there early and that was a good thing, as the day warmed up quickly. Talk about car-candy-overload! There were rows and rows of beautiful cars, repre-senting several marques. I was pleased and sur-

prised to see fellow Roadrunner, Dave Stinchcomb, showing his beautiful Gulf Blue 911. The following weekend, I flew to Salt Lake City to be the PCA Observer at Miller Motorsports Park for Intermountain Region’s DE. There were about 70 drivers and the event was well-run and safe. I enjoyed watching the run groups get out on the track, plus I had a chance to get to know more of the IMR members. Just a few days after returning from SLC, I hit the road to Traverse City, MI, for Parade 2013. The drive was nice and I only encountered some rain about 50 miles southwest of Chicago. I had a Zone Rep meeting on Saturday afternoon, then more meetings on Sunday. Big thanks to Joe and Nancy Warren, who helped with the sign-ups for the Michelin Drive & Compare event that Jo Martin and I were co-chairing. United Airlines had insisted

that Jo stay in Chicago Saturday night and that made it impossible for her to be at Registra-tion/Check-in first thing in the morning. All day Monday and Tuesday, Jo and I were very busy with our event, as hundreds of people wanted to drive the new 911’s that PCNA had provided to us! But we did get to sneak over to the con-cours, which was held at one of the Grand

Traverse Resort’s golf courses. I never get tired of looking at the results of people spending hours and hours cleaning their cars. On Wednesday, I arrived at the autocross course in time to walk around it and develop a strat-egy. I visited with lots of friends and watched the first group, then got in my car and ran 5 laps. Half-way through our session, Hans Peter Porsche and some other people from Porsche AG showed up and im-pressed everyone with their racing skills. I finished in 2nd place in my class and I was mostly pleased. It’s the usual thing – you wish you could have gotten

just one more lap! Thursday was tour day and I joined about 40 other cars for a driving tour to Mackinac Island. We boarded a ferry to the island and had a won-derful lunch at the Grand Hotel. The landscaping around town and the surrounding streets was abso-lutely beautiful with all of the flowers and greenery. I took the Tech Quiz on Friday and then attended some tech sessions in the afternoon. Although I did better in this Tech Quiz than I’ve done in the past few Parades, the competition was tough and I finished near the bottom of my group! Saturday was the Parade Committee after-meeting, then the Volunteer Luncheon, then the Fi-nal Banquet. I had signed up for the Parade of Cars but by this day, I was too tired and opted to watch the action from the side of the road, instead. The Final Banquet is always a nice time to see friends one more time, and it was exciting to see 2 new Caymans being awarded to the raffle winners. And Darwin Binek from IMR won the trip to Germany! My drive back home was uneventful (thank-fully) and I listened to 3 books on CD for the 2 days that it took me to drive 1620 miles! Here are the results from Parade and I want to congratulate everyone from Zone 9 who partici-pated in the competitions. Even if you didn’t win an award, you made Zone 9 proud by participating!

Roadrunner Style:

Dominic Cagliostro may not drive a Porsche very often, but he’s been one of our most active par-ticipants for many years. Always with a smile and a hello, Dominic can be seen helping out at all the autocrosses and many of the socials. If you haven’t already, introduce yourself and say hello to another one of our fine examples of “Roadrunner Style.”
