The Wyong District Swimming Carnival was held last week and our school representatives performed well. Their behaviour was outstanding. Thanks to Mrs Binnie and Mrs McMillan for their organisation and support of these students. On Wednesday Mr Shipp took our boys’ cricket team to participate in the first round of the Primary Schools Sports Association competition. Next week is Harmony Day. The theme for this day is Sports Around The World. As this year is an Olympic Year the theme for Harmony Day 2012 reflects the peaceful and harmonious spirit of the Olympic Games. Our wonderful students will be participating in a variety of activities including playing sports from different countries. Students will also be completing art and craft activities with members of our Student Representative Council. Some students from 2/3P and the Public Speaking Gifted and Talented Group will discuss the meaning of Harmony Day 2012 during the Year 3 to 6 Assembly on Monday afternoon. It was fantastic to see the large number of families who returned the Priority School’s Survey 2012. Thank you to all the parents and carers who took the time to complete this survey. The surveys were collected and returned to the Priority School’s Directorate where they will be automatically scanned and the data compiled. We will be informed later during the year as to whether we were successful in gaining funding. This week sees some of our long time staff leaving us to seek new challenges. Ms Ellis is officially retiring this week after more than thirty years service with the Department of Education and Communities. Mrs Lyndall Coles is leaving to take a position closer to her home and finally Mr Derek Garland our General Assistant is also retiring. He has been our General Assistant for twenty years. All these staff members have given years of wonderful service to our school and they will be sorely missed by our school community. We wish them all the best for the future. Our Kindergarten children have settled in beautifully and are learning all about school life and routines. Our Year Ones have come back to school with greater maturity and independence and all class members are enthusiastic learners. We have been working hard in our morning literacy groups and children are making pleasing progress in reading and writing. Parent helpers are needed in the mornings to change home readers, help with Kinder sight words and to assist children with playing literacy games. Please feel free to come in any day and help out as your assistance is truly appreciated! K/1H have been enjoying the hands-on maths activities we do in our weekly units and this week we have had lots of fun learning about grouping and sharing (multiplication and division). I am very proud of how the children have coped with relocating to a demountable classroom this week as our room is being painted. It has been a topic for our writing and inspired us to use our lovely playground for some of our maths activities. We are looking forward to being back in our freshly painted classroom at the end of the week! Amelia Heap – Class Teacher SCHOOL LATENESS Lateness can be a problem for many schools. “So what if my child is sometimes late for school—does it matter that much?” Take a few seconds to read this and see what you think! School is usually the first place where children are made aware of the importance of regular timekeeping. Arriving early will boost your child’s confidence for the day, and set them in the right frame of mind for learning and achievement. If a child arrives late the whole class is disrupted and the teacher has to repeat the same things over and over again - losing valuable teaching time or the child completely misses out on information eg daily student notices. Punctuality and good attendance will always be important - at school now and later at work. Help to make sure your child is given a good start in life by coming to school regularly and on time. Continues next week

PSP SURVEYS On behalf of Toukley Public School I would like to thank all families who returned the Priority School Survey forms. If we are selected to be a Priority School for the next three years it will mean funding to continue many of our exciting Literacy and Numeracy programs for example The Home Maths Games Program. Also it will enable us to purchase more, rich literature for use in classrooms and for home reading.

PRIORITY SCHOOLS MATHS HOME GAMES On behalf of our school I would like to thank Mrs Bronwyn Sherry for the amazing job she is doing in producing more games for our Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 students to play at home. She has also repaired many games that have become damaged. Mrs Sherry has personally bought playing cards and laminating sheets. The school appreciates this greatly. If you would like to help Mrs Sherry and myself in producing and repairing games please join us on Monday mornings next term from 11:40 until 1:00pm we would really appreciate your help. Mrs Sherry has asked if there are any parents who could donate more packs of playing cards this would be greatly appreciated. Many games require packs of playing cards as the basis of the game so we need them desperately. Any student who donates playing cards will go into a draw to win a free lunch at the canteen. As I am on leave for the next couple of weeks the draw will be held early in Term 2.

NEWMANS PROMPTS Newmans Prompts are a great way to help your child solve Maths problems. All students Kindergarten to Year 6 are taught these simple steps that help them unpack problems. You too can use these prompts when you are helping your child with Maths homework.
