1. ScopeThe complete range, capabilities anddetails of this equipment will beidentified and illustrated in Figs 1 to 17inclusive
2. Design & ConstructionAll the equipment illustrated is designedto meet the specific requirements of ESI41-21. The construction is of a robustnature and will withstand a reasonableamount of rough handling.
3. Equipment3.1 – Earth End ClampsThe spring loaded feature of all typesmakes them suitable for application byhand to copper or aluminium earth barsin any natural condition. (See paragraph5.1)3.2 - Line End ClampsAll types whether spring loaded or notshould be applied by means of anoperating socket (See paragraph 5.2)attached to an insulated operating pole. The design of all Line End Clamps issuch that once hooked over a busbarthey become self supporting whilst theoperating screw is tightened orloosened.3.3 – Stranded Conductors – LineEnd ClampIt may be necessary in some oldersubstations to apply earths to dirtystranded conductors. However, smalldiameter stranded conductors may notcarry the full rated current, but tests haveshown that Clamp Type ESI-L1successfully carried 13.1 kA (750 MVA at33 kV) for 2 seconds when attached to a200 sq. mm in polluted hard-drawncopper stranded conductor.3.4- Operating SocketsMade in light alloy material, the twotypes are illustrated in Figs 15 and 16.These essentially support the Line EndClamp when being carried at the end ofan operating pole and also actuate theoperating screw of the Line End clampwhen being secured in position or beingremoved.Socket type S9D ESI S1 (Fig. 15)supports clamps being applied in anupward direction.Socket type CEA/S ESI S2 (Fig. 16) is analternative type to the above where theoperating screw of the Line End Clamp iscontrolled by means of spring loadingenclosed in the socket.3.5– Operating Poles – InsulatedThese should be limited to a length of4.88m (16ft) as it is considered that this
is the maximum length of pole withclamp and lead attached which cannormally be handled with safety. Poles ofthese lengths are made up in multiplesections of 1.22m (4ft) lengths (SeeFig.17) the joints are machined toprovide a rigid assembly and include adouble sided snap action spring lockingdevice. All details are in accordance withSpecification ESI 41-21.3.6 – Earth LeadsOnly cables from approvedmanufacturers and terminations withapproved compression end and supportsprings in accordance with SpecificationESI 41-21 Paragraph 6.1, are suppliedfor earthing leads for connectingbetween the Line End Clamps and theEarth End Clamps. The flexible conductor is of circularcross-section made up of commerciallypure aluminium wires in the H68(BS2627) condition giving a nominalsectional area of 150mm2. The nominalnumber and nominal diameter of wires is925/0.45mm. The conductor is laid upas 37 stranded ropes each of 25 bunchedwires in 3 layers applied in the samedirection of lay around a central rope. The lengths of lay for the inner, middleand outer layers are approximately 75,125 and 175mm respectively. Theconductor has a nominal diameter of17.2mm with a maximum of 17.9mm. theconductor is wrapped with a layer of0.023mm p.t.p tape with a maximumoverlap of 25 per cent. The conductorthen has an extruded p.v.c sheath ofapproximately 1.25mm radial thicknessapplied to protect the conductor fromcorrosion and mechanical damage. Thediameter over the p.v.c sheath of thecable does not exceed 20.5mm. Theconductor resistance per 1000m at 20°cdoes not exceed 0.208 ohms.
4. Selection of Clamps and Cables4.1 - Current RatingPortable earthing equipment for use inopen type H.V. substations consists ofLine End Clamps, Earth End Clamps,Earth Leads, Operating Poles andOperating Sockets. These componentsare suitable for assembly into sets ofearthing equipment and the minimumcurrent/time rating of one set is 17.5 kARMS for 2 seconds except that whenapplied to a 10mm diameter lineconductor the minimum current rating ofthe conductor/equipment combination is13.1kA for 2 seconds. The Clamps are
suitable for application to existing Lineand Earth End conductors of the sizesspecified. One set of earthing equipment, whichcomplies with the specified weightlimitations, is the maximum which canbe safely applied by a person of averagestrength. At locations where the faultcurrent level exceeds the specifiedcurrent/time rating of 17.5 kA for 2seconds it is intended that more thanone set of equipment be used. It shouldbe noted that with solidly earthedneutrals the single phase fault currentcan be up to 1.2 times the three phasefault current.
4.2 – Guide to Suitable Number ofLeads4.3 - Earthing Equipment subjected toFault Current in ServiceShould earthing equipment inadvertentlycarry a short circuit current it must bediscarded as there is no satisfactory wayof assessing its suitability for furtherservice.
5. Application of Earths5.1 - Earth End ClampsWhen manually applying and removingthese clamps only firm pressure by aperson of normal strength is necessaryto achieve good contact and tightness.Spring loaded clamps should betightened down until the spring is fullycompressed. Earth End Clamps shouldbe fastened securely in place before anyattempt is made to secure the Line EndClamp.5.2 - Line End Clamp – S9DOperating Socket OnlyWhen a clamp is raised to the busbar alocating lug on the clamp engages with ashort slot in the top of the socket. Assoon as the clamp is pulled down overthe busbar the lug is disengagedallowing the socket to turn, whilst thecross pin in its operating screw isretained within a long slot in the socket. The special contour of this long slot issuch as to give a fully positive tighteningaction whilst making it virtuallyimpossible for the clamp to become
inadvertently disengaged from the pole.It should be noted that at all times whentightening or loosening a clamp adownward pull should be maintained onthe pole. When the clamp is fullytightened the socket should be pushedgently up towards the clamp by 6.35mm(0.25in) at the same time maintaining thetightening pressure and the socket willautomatically become disengaged. For attachment, the operating poleshould be rotated with normal firm handpressure until a definite resistance tofurther movement is experienced. At thispoint spring loaded line end clamps willbe positively tightened and the springfully compressed.5.3 - Line End Clamp – CEA/S SocketOnlyThis socket is for application in thedownward direction, i.e., below thehorizontal, and for this reason is springloaded to ensure the clamp does not fallout of the socket inadvertently.
6. Maintenance of EarthingEquipmentIt is essential that earthing equipment ishandled and stored with care and isproperly maintained. The equipmentshould be inspected at maximumintervals of 3 months and immediatelyprior to application. The results of theregular inspection should be recorded.Clamps : Should operate freely andmoving parts should be lightlylubricated. Springs should be protectedby a heavy grease. Contact faces shouldbe clean.Flexible Cables : There should be novisible damage to strands of cables, andthe P.V.C sheath should be sound. Thejoint between the cable and terminationshould be secure and the componentsmust be in good condition. M12 boltssecuring cable termination to line endclamps must be tightened by applying atorque of 61 Nm.Poles : Should be inspected for damagewhich could lead to breakage of the polewhen lifting earthing equipment. Jointsbetween pole sections and socket mustbe in a sound condition. Poles should becleaned and re-varnished at appropriate intervals.

1. Scope,AcknowledgementsThis equipment covers fixed devices forearthing 132kV sub-stations having faultlevels up to 5,000 MVA and 275 kVsubstations having fault levels up to15,000 MVA. It was designed anddeveloped by P&B in conjunction withthe CEGB and is manufactured to theCEGB Standard TPS 3/4 (Switchgear).Acknowledgement is due to theElectricity Supply Industry forpermission to quote form the Standard.2.Design and ConstructionEach earthing device consists of a singlephase assembly shown typically in Fig.1and having the following features:The operating pole is a glass fibre polelocated vertically in two or more guides. The lower guide has a bolt which isnormally located in a hole in the pole, thus preventing the pole from beingraised. The bolt can be withdrawn onlywhen freed by use of a conventionalinterlock key or padlock key.A double hooked line end clamp ispermanently attached to the top of thepole. One or two cables according torating are permanently attached to the
line end clamp and to the nearest earthbar.A special earth bar clamp has beendeveloped which is suitable for attachingto existing copper earth bars to give afully rated permanent connection. A hole8.73 mm diameter (11/32") is requiredfor each clamp. Ensure that the earth baris clean back and front. If attaching tonew earth bar secure aluminium orCopper/aluminium compressionterminal direct to clean (tinned in thecase of copper) earth bar by 12.7mm(1/2") diameter bolt through 8.73mmdiameter hole ensuring that ‘shoulder’ onfitting is hard against the edge of theearth bar.The guides are attached to suitable steeladaptors which secure the equipment toconvenient parts of structures providedfor main equipment. They vary with thenature of the structure and are notsupplied by P&B but a range of steeladaptors suitable for most applicationsis included in CEGB Standard TPS 3/4.Interlock boxes for standard locks with16mm (5/8") long stubs are available forsingle way or three way arrangements. The single way boxes will normally be
fitted to two phases and the multi-waybox to the third phase. Any number oflocks can be added to the multi-way bymeans of extension boxes. If required the equipment may beinstalled without interlocks but withprovision for padlocking in the "OPEN"position only. The "lift" of the pole is limited by thedistance between the bottom guide andthe ground, so that where the initial “lift”is insufficient, one or two extensionpoles are required. These extensions areof light weight glass fibre with snapaction sockets. A simple resting device isavailable which permits the pole to besupported at suitable locations so thatboth of the operator’s hands are free forfitting and removing extension poles. The line end clamp is suitable for rigidcircular conductors or stubs of anydiameter between 38 to 76mm (11/2" to3") and is provided with one of threesettings as required. The conductor orstub must be substantially horizontal. Aseries of busbar spigots are availableeach suitable for a prescribed positionwhere the busbar is not substantiallyhorizontal or the busbar consists of a
stranded conductor.See Section 6. Special attention has beenpaid to the prevention of accidental ordeliberate defeat of the interlockingsystems. All current carrying parts are of copper orcopper based alloys. Other metal partsare stainless or galvanised steel. It is notanticipated that there should be anydeterioration of the equipment due tobeing located permanently outdoors butglass fibre poles may require to berevarnished from time to time.3. Technical ApplicationThe equipment has been fully tested forthe fault ratings to be found on theCEGB’s systems. For fully interlockeddevices only one cable per phase isrequired irrespective of the fault level. For padlocked equipment flexible earthleads must be provided according to therating listed in Table 1.4. Supply of ComponentsThe components supplied by P&B are asshown in full on Fig .1.The interlock locks and keys are notincluded.
