    Welcome to

Catholic Church at Fort Gordon, G

Q:Why pray for the dead?A:The question of purgatory and praying for thedead was a major issue between Catholics andProtestants in the 16th century. The Council ofTrents 1563 decree about purgatory reaffirmedts existence and the usefulness of prayers for the

deceased, yet it cautioned against a certain kindof curiosity or superstition... about it.

The Roman Catholic teaching on purgatoryreflects its understanding of the communion ofsaints. We are connected to the saints in heaven, the saints-in-waiting in purgatory and other be-ievers here on earth. Prayers for the deceased are

not a means of buying their way out of purga-

tory. The Catholic Churchs teaching about purgatory

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1030-32)says that all sin, unfortunately, has a life of itsown and may have bad effects even after thesinner repents. Sincere repentance includes adesire to repair the damage done by ones sins. That may or may not be complete before theperson dies.

When the world ends at the Final Judgment, there will be only two possibilities: heaven andhell. We who celebrate Jesus Resurrection oversin and death look forward to sharing in thatvictory, and we pray that our beloved dead maydo the same.Retrieved from http://www.americancatholic.org/

    Scripture

Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us!

    (Isaiah 25:9)

you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

(Psalm 23:5b) My God will fully supply whatever you need, in

accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.(Philippians 4:19)

Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite

to the feast whomever you find. (Matthew 22:9)

    Reflection

Who is invited to the feast?

What will God supply for the feast?

Where is the feast? Are you attending?

Who did you bring to the feast?

This rests in the conviction that the life and ministryof Jesus was focused on those at the margins of reli-gious and social institutions to such a degree that hehimself identified with them unto death and into hell.In this view Christs Spirit is to be discerned in the

struggle for liberation among those who have beencast to the margins of Church and society, making it

possible to embrace marginalized existence itself.(Michael Downey)

Study on the Book of John

What do I have to do to be saved?

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlast-

    ng life. (John 3:16)

This verse is well-known among Sunday School children. It isperhaps the most foundational verse in the Bible. The entire Chris-tian faith is established in the simple truth of this one verse. Askany Christian who has been a Christian for more than six monthsto quote John 3:16 and nearly every one of them can say it verbatim without even thinking about it. Yet per-haps few really do take the time to think about it. This verse is often casually overlooked rather than esteemedas a profound revelation of who God is. It has become a clich among Gods people.

The most thought-provoking phrase in John 3:16 is the truth that says, Because God so valued and dearlytreasured the world and all those living in it, He gave. In many places throughout Scripture, Gods conditionsfor blessing are clear. Yet when God gave the blessing of His Son, that gift was given with no strings attached. It was simply a demonstration of His deep and passionate desire to have intimate fellowship with those whowould come to Him of their own free will. He demanded nothing. He simply made available a Bridge to span

the spiritual gap. And God risked everything to do so.

The love that God demonstrated is beyond the human capability to understand. When humans think of love, they think of a physical affection or a brotherly fondness. It is incomprehensible that such a sovereign Godcould love such a depraved and debauched society. It is equally incomprehensible that such a sovereign Godcould give such a valuable gift to such a depraved and debauched society knowing that so few would receivet. Yet this is exactly what God did. The love spoken of in John 3:16 is agapao, meaning Gods active and

purposeful compassion, mercy, grace brought forth in the form of His Son Jesus Christ for a specific purpose.

God made the conscious decision to give though He had received nothing from mankind at the time. No obe-dience, no allegiance, no intimate fellowship, nothing of any real long-term value had been given. The birth ofJesus Christ was not God repaying mankind for a favor they had done. Likewise, Jesus was not a payment tomankind for something they had earned. God gave out of Himself, through His Son, to ultimately pay thepenalty for sins that neither He nor Jesus Christ had committed. All of this because He so dearly loved Hismost treasured of all of Creation.
