Paul Renner was born on August 9, 1878
in Germany He studied architecture and painting in Berlin, Munich and
Karlsruhe. Renner worked as a painter in Munich and from 1907-1917 was a
production assistant and presentation manager for
Georg Muller Verlag.
In 1926 Renner took the position of principal for the
Printing Trade School in Munich. Ren-ner also co-founded and was the director
for the Master School for Germany’s Printers, a private school for designers. In 1932 Renner
wrote a book in which he criticized Nazi policy and beliefs. After this, Renner
was removed from the school as the director.
Renner’s most notable typography work is the font Futura.
This sans serif font was designed from 1924 until 1926 and is based on geometric
shapes. Renner used the words “form follows function” when designing Futura. It was released for commercial use in 1927 and became a fundamen-tal part of the “New Typography” which became classified as Geometrical Modernism. Futura is
still used today by advertising typographers because of the font’s
commanding visual power.
Renner designed other typefaces such as Plak (1928), Futura Black (1929),
Futura licht (1932), Futura Schlagzeile (1932), Ballade (1937), Renner Anti-qua (1939), and Steile Futura (1954). Renner’s design broke the standard
Gothic and roman styles of his time period.
Renner took his work very seriously and constantly
sought to provide a strong example for younger generations of typographers. Ren-ner published a number of books including:
Typographie als Kunst (Typography as Art), Die Kunst der Typographie (The Art of Typography),
Color Order And Harmony and many more. Renner died at the age of 78
in 1956 in Germany.
