Boomtown Winemakers Co-operative, Castlemaine, Central Victoria

Boomtown was born in July 2014 when Tim Sproal, Pat Underwood and Jarad Curwood were dreaming about a place to make their own wine locally. Whilst not achievable as individuals, the idea of taking a shared lease, with shared equipment and three winemakers made the most sense. A place of experimentation , learning and really good times. Sourcing grapes from great local vineyards and making wines with sense of honesty that told stories about their home.

The Boomtown wines are worked on as a collective, whilst the individual winemakers guide their own wines to bottle; Tim makes Minim Wine, Pat makes Little Reddie and Jarad makes Chapter. "We want Boomtown to be an inclusive place, open to our local wine community - a place where a young winemaker can come and make a proper start."

In January 2017, Jarad moved on from Boomtown to focus whole heartedly on his own wine label following recent and continued success of his brand. Tim and Pat are both extremely grateful for Jarad's energy and guidance whilst a part of Boomtown. Jarad will always remain a founder of this great project, his influence on the wines, the space and the brand will remain.

Domaine de Mouscaillo, Limoux

Located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, at the crossroads of the Atlantic and Mediterranean lies Roquetaillade, a little village just inside the Languedoc. After several experiences in renowned wine areas and becoming good friends with Didier Dagueneau, Marie-Claire and Pierre decided to move back to Roquetaillade, the village of their childhood where they now grow vines on a very small parcel of the family land, planted and grafted 35 years ago. Marie-Claire and Pierre work in harmony with nature “We are convinced that we must reinvent an agriculture which is at one with nature, develop the knowhow, but, under no circumstance should we return to the past”. They prefer to be called farmers as opposed to winemakers. Terroir: Their vineyards comprise of clay-limestone chalk soil, full of little fossils (turritelles) laid down by the sea some fifty million years ago. At the Domaine de Mouscaillo, they endeavour to reach a perfect balance between man, environment, plant and wine, where organic and biotechnical methods are adopted. The Pinot vines have a southern exposure and, therefore, benefit from a greater exposure to the sunshine. For the Chardonnay wine, fermenting and ageing are done in large oak barrels (both new and old), which contain between 450 and 600 litres.

Domaine Philippe Raimbault, Sancerre

As a 9th generation winegrower, Philippe strives to make the best wines possible with his Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes. He constructed his càve over 20 years ago, previously working alongside his father and grandfather, learning his craft along the way to make excellent wines. The càve and Sancerre vines are nestled in the village of Sury-en-Vaux, about 6 kilometers from Sancerre. He is lucky to have 3 appellations of vines on both side of the Loire River; Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé and Coteaux du Giennois. Philippe's hands on approach as a vigneron, enables him to oversee the wine process from start to finish. His work in the vineyards, càve and vinification allows him to create wines which are elegant, bursting with fruit, flavour and refreshing minerality, synonymous with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes from this region. They are part of the Terre Vitis Association , a small collection of independent producers in the region using organic methods. Domaine Philippe Raimbault produces a Sancerre Red, 3 Sancerre whites and a Sancerre Rosé, along with 2 Pouilly Fumés, and a Coteaux du Giennois White, Red and Rosé. Châteaux Solidaires was created in 1937, when a handful of Winemakers located in the region of Blaye decided to gather their means of production to become more competitive. By coming together, each vine-grower was able to take advantage of increased expertise regarding the production, the sales and marketing of their wines. Thanks to this, Châteaux Solidaires wines can now be quoted among the best wines of the appellation.

Château Montfollet , Blaye, Bordeaux

Set within the Bordeaux region lies Château Montfollet in the heart of the best terroirs of the Blaye appellation. The Raimond family has owned the forty hectares of vineyard for three generations. Dominique Raimond, a passionate winegrower, works alongside Christian Veyry, a highly regarded oenologist, using all the technical and traditional means to achieve Château Montfollet wines. The stages of vineyard work meet several requirements: to reduce the vigor of the vineyard while ensuring its durability, to promote the maturation of the grapes, to respect the fauna and the surrounding flora, to cultivate the soils under the row and to naturally root between the rows. Leaf and bunch thinning allow an excellent maturity of the grapes.

Terroir: It is located on the clay-gravel and clay-limestone slopes that overlook the Gironde estuary.

A .A. Badenhorst Family Wines, Swartland

A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein Farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The 28 hectares of old bush vines grow in the Siebritskloof region of the Paardeberg mountain. The property is owned by the dynamic and good looking cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst. Originally from Constantia, their Grandfather was the farm manager of Groot Constantia for 46 years. Their fathers were born and raised there and farmed together in Constantia during the days when people still ate fresh vegetables and Hanepoot grapes, drank Cinsault and when there were a lot les traffic lights. A time when hippies still had a significant presence. Together, the two of them restored a neglected cellar on the farm which was last used in the 1930’s to make natural wines in the traditional manner. Adi is a founding member of the Swartland Revolution and Swartland Independent Producers. Terroir: Three distinct types of granites are found here, namely the Paardeberg-, Lammershoek- and Lemoenfontein-type plus different sub-surface geology including clay, weathered granite and some serious shale.

Alheit Vineyards, Walker Bay

Chris and Suzaan Alheit’s aim is to vinify extraordinary Cape vineyards. In doing this, they hope to find the voice of the land. That voice may be a choir of amazing blocks blended into one bottle, or it maybe the purity and beauty of a single vineyard soloist. They believe that fine wine is grown rather than made. In their cellar, a vineyard is allowed to become a wine without interference. Alheit Vineyards is based on Hemelrand, a beautiful mountain farm situated high on the Hemel & Aarde Ridge in Walker Bay. This rugged piece of fynbos covered land belongs to Hans and Mary Anne Evenhuis. Terroir: There is more diurnal variation here than anywhere else in the Walker Bay region and is the coolest of the 3 wards. The soils here are chiefly composed of Table Mountain sandstone and decomposed granite, which lean towards more fertile soils.

Mount Abora, Swartland

Winemaker Johan Meyer crafts the wines of Mount Abora. They make natural wines, using zero commercial yeast and no other modern winemaking preparations. They harvest their grapes earlier at no more than 23.5° Balling to not only ensure lower alcohol levels, but to retain the brightness and life of their carefully tended grapes as they transform into the wines. Abora liberally use whole bunch fermentation on red and white wines, and allow post fermentation hot maceration on skins and stalks. They are proud members of the Swartland Independent movement. Terroir: The soils are deep shale and schist and the vines are farmed essentially as dryland vineyards with supplementary irrigation to counter the extreme hot and dry conditions just before ripening. The vines are mostly planted on south and west facing slopes to optimise the benefit of cooler spots.
