The future depends on what you do today.Mahatma Gandhi 1869 to 1948

Many a true word. I am very mindful that the future stability and growth of theBranch and the Association worldwide depends on the actions and progress madeby those in office today.

To sit back and do nothing could risk our membership dwindling to the point ofoblivion. We need to be more active, to provide benefits that are truly beneficialand to encourage the involvement of those at the younger end of the spectrum. We are only a small committee with every member playing a vital role that leaveslittle room for other projects. A member does not have to be a member of thecommittee to play their part in Branch proceedings. They need to have some timeand energy, therefore I ask that anyone who feels they can and are willing to assiston a project to please give me a ring. Let me know your thoughts and where youwould be keen to help. Your input, however small will be greatly appreciated.

There have been Regional Gatherings in Scotland, Ireland, the North-West, theSouth-West, South Coast, and the South-East as well as the Association eventssuch as the Braai, The Regimental Dinner and, soon, the Christmas Sundowner.Thank you to all the members who made these events possible, and especially thisyear's Regimental Dinner which was such a success. A grand time was had by all.

My thanks to everyone who supported the Association throughout the year bydonating prizes and buying tombola tickets, and buying tickets for the annuallottery.

I wish you all a very happy festive season and I look forward to seeing many ofyou at our Christmas Sundowner, on Tuesday 5 December.

Two for the price of one givesentry to a range of attractions when two people travel by train. Pick up a brochurecontaining application forms from a rail station or go to www.daysoutguide.co.uk

There are many Rhodesia-oriented groups in South Africa and The Rhosarianmagazine is a digest of their various newsletters and magazines. See page 42 onhow to access this digest.

The UK Outpost Editorial team wish you the compliments of the Winter seasonand wish you well for the New Year. May you all remain healthy and contented.

Stop press - As this issue goes to print it appears a military coup is taking placein Zimbabwe and Mugabe and his wife are in the throes of being ejected from office. The next few weeks will be interesting. I hope that whoever succeeds will get abetter grip on the economy and instil financial discipline on the ministers.

Constitutional College ReportA Special General Meeting of the Constitutional College was held at the VictoryServices Club, London, on Friday 29 September to ratify amendments to theconstitution previously discussed and agreed by college delegates. Theamendments concerned the change of name of the College to ConstitutionalCollege and rectifying anomalies in the process for the election of the President.Delegates attended from KZ-N - 6650 Peter Combes, Matabeleland - 9499 KarlHurry, Transvaal - 6610 John Pirrett, Western Cape - 7751 Alan Crook, andproxy votes nominating the Chairman as their proxy came from Australia, NewZealand, Mashonaland, Eastern Cape. Nothing was received from Natal Midlandsor Border Branches.

Ten Association members also attended the meeting, 5111 Jack Bacon, 5681Robin Harvey, 6193 Peter Good, 6388 Will Cornell, 6507 Seamus Power, 7540Charlie Atkinson, 7875 Terry Keen, 8030 Murray Russell, 8443 Tony Murphy, and 8715 Len Taylor.

The meeting was opened by the President and Chairman of the College, 7391Alan Toms, who gave a brief explanation of the duties and responsibilities of theCollege in terms of the constitution and the purpose of the meeting. The CollegeStanding Secretary, 7784 Steve Acornley, then took the Chair and votingcommenced. All amendments were ratified and the constitution will be amendedaccordingly.

The amended constitution can be viewed on the Constitutional College webpage <bsap.org/collegebranches>. The meeting moved on to other business. ThePresident explained that the College had agreed to incorporate the RegimentalAssociation as a private company limited by guarantee which would be registered

on the Isle of Man. Thereason for this would be toattempt to provide someprotection for the brand, trademarks and copyrightof the BSAP RegimentalAssociation as the Collegeis required to do by s6(a)of the constitution. 8443Tony Murphy, a solicitorand notary practising in

the Isle of Man, has generously undertaken to carry out the registration processand would thereafter act as the secretary and a director of the company, TheBritish South Africa Police Regimental Association Limited (BSAPRA Ltd). Thecompany would register the BSAP crest as its mark.

Questions were then invited from the floor. Will Cornell asked how the companycould actually attain ownership of property such as the badge. The President è

advised that this would be registered as the mark of the company in the UKjurisdiction. However, the costs of registering trademarks worldwide is prohibitiveand Branches would be licensed by the company to use the mark and other BSAPitems, together with a duty to protect them in their jurisdictions if possible.

Robin Harvey said he wished to record that members owed a huge debt ofthanks to those delegates of the College and Committees who spend an immenseamount of their time in managing the day-to-day activities of the various branches ofthe Association. The President thanked him and the meeting closed.

Following the meeting theinitial paperwork for theincorporation of the BSAPRA Ltdprepared by Tony Murphy wascompleted and signed bymembers who had agreed to bethe initial subscribers of thecompany. Further details willfollow.

Zimbabwe PensionsTaken from the final issue of the OSPA (Overseas Pensioners’ Association)newsletter.‘In Britain the Government was kept aware of the unresolved pensions issuethrough correspondence to the FCO Minister for Africa Sir Gerald Howarth MP (aformer Parliamentary Adviser to OSPA). An Early Day Motion in the House ofCommons tabled by Sir Nicholas Soames (son of Lord Soames, the last GovernorGeneral of Rhodesia 1978-80) and some other MPs, from both Conservative andLabour parties. That motion fell when Parliament was prorogued for the GeneralElection. Sir Nicholas tabled an amended motion on 12 July. It has gained supportfrom members of five political parties plus one independent. Such motions are notdebated but are regarded as useful for keeping a topic as a live issue.Pensioners in South Africa are still frustrated by the insistence of the PensionsOffice in Harare that all pensioners must report in person to a Zimbabwe embassyor consulate to sign a fresh certificate of life. There is no concession for peoplephysically unable to make the necessary journey. Furthermore it appears theembassy has failed to send completed certificates of life to the Pensions Officebefore stated cut-off date. The consequence is that most of the pensioners in

Regimental Dinner ReportThis year commemorated seventy consecutive Regimental Dinners, celebratingthe history and camaraderie of the UK Branch of the BSAP Regimental Association.Members of the Branch, former members of the BSAP and their guests gatheredat the Victory Services Club on 29 September to remember and honour theirRegiment and those who served.

A Reunion Centre was open during the afternoon in the Trafalgar Room. Itwas here that 145 former Force members, wives, partners and guests assembledto meet up with old and newer members, many of whom hadn’t seen each otherfor a considerable time. From the general sound it was obvious that a lot ofcatching up was taking place, together with a great feeling of camaraderie.

A bugler from The Royal Air Force Salon Orchestra sounded mess call andeveryone made their way through to the Carisbrooke Hall, to the playing ofKum-A-Kye. The tables had been named after minerals found in Rhodesia anddecorated with a flame lily, (the national flower of Rhodesia), blue napkins withthe regimental badge in goldemblazoned on them, crestedmenus and specialcommemorative cards listingevents that happened in 1948.

Our Chairman, Mike Coleman, welcomed everyone to thisanniversary dinner, especiallyLord Michael (Patron) and LadyTor Walker, and Air CommodoreNigel (Chief Executive of theVictory Services Club) and Becky

(4005) Ginny Forrest - in loving memory of husband, Stan

Beet. Mike said that over the years, thenumber of members attending the dinnerhad fallen and that this year thecommittee had decided to encouragewives, partners and especially youngermembers who had served in the lateryears to attend. Mike also gave a specialwelcome to those members who hadtravelled from America, Australia, Canada,France, Ireland, South Africa andZimbabwe. Mike passed on the good wishes for a successful evening from HerMajesty the Queen. He then asked the Rev. Paddy Allen to say grace.

The Royal Air Force Salon Orchestra enhanced the evening with their music.Following a delicious duo of melon with Parma ham as starter, a main course ofroast beef, ox cheek, Yorkshire pudding, dauphinoise potatoes and vegetablesfollowed by chocolate truffle, ice cream and shortbread (just to make the mouthswater of those who didn’t attend). Then the National Anthem was played, to whichall attending showed they were ingood voice - Parry Jones proposedThe Loyal Toast.

Mike announced that the VictoryServices Club had kindly donated avoucher for two night’s bed andbreakfast, with dinner on one of thenights, for two people - a trulygenerous prize. He asked Becky Beet to draw the lucky number (corresponding toa number on the diner’s name badge) and Nigel Beet to present the voucher tothe winner, Randal Kennerley.

Mike continued by saying that the Victory ServicesClub has been the venue of our first Tuesday of themonth gatherings for many years, where membersand friends of the Force can be assured of a warmwelcome. The club and staff also look after us for ourdinner, our Christmas sundowner and our committeemeetings. In recognition of this friendship, Mike askedNigel to accept a model of a BSAP Mounted Trooper(donated to the Association by the family of the late4158 Tim Weimer) on loan for display within the club.Nigel replied, saying that he was delighted to acceptthe model (adding that Mike had made it quite clearthat it was only on loan), and that a suitable placewould be found in the club for it to be displayed. Hewent on to say that the club welcomed the è

association it has with theBSAP and hoped that itwould continue for manyyears to come. Nigel thenproposed the toast to TheRegiment.    Mike introduced theguest speaker, formermember of the Force,Gordon Best, saying hesuspected Gordon wasabout to tear up the rulebook of stuffy speeches. What followed was an extremely interesting visual presentation of the lifetimeambition of Gordon and his late wife, Moira, to compete in the 2017 Rallye MonteCarlo Classique 1,500 miles Glasgow to Monaco. In 2014, Gordon and Moirabecame the proud owners of a 1960 Rover 100 (called Cuthbert), originally ownedand brought to Scotland by Bruce Allen from Cape Town. Two years of

refurbishment followed.Sadly, Moira passed away from cancer

shortly before the entry date, but had insistedthat Gordon fulfil their dream and enter therally to raise money for cancer charities,Strathcarron Hospice and Beatson Hospital,Glasgow. A family friend, Dave, stepped in asnavigator and on 25 January, as Crew 400they set off from Paisley Abbey cheered by15,000 spectators. Driving non-stop for threedays and nights, Gordon’s driving skills andexperience from Driving School and Rhodesiandirt roads were needed to complete thegruelling route through forests, dense fog, ice

and snowy alpine tracks; the final stage involving 32 hours non-stop against 420cars from nine countries. Gordon and Dave reached Monte Carlo with minutes tospare before the cut-off time. He met the General Commissioner in recognition ofraising £7,500 and press awareness for Cancer Care patients. He was presentedwith the silver ACM Trophy Coupe offerte par L’Automobile Club de Monaco. Theyreturned to Scotland at a more leisurely pace.

Gordon ended his talk with the message - Life is short. Like the rally you don’tknow what is round the next corner, so enjoy life and if there’s something youreally want to do, get out there and do it. Those present showed theirappreciation by giving Gordon a standing ovation.

900434 Julian Pellatt, Junior Troop, replied mentioning his time in the Force asan 18 year old National Service Patrol Officer stationed at Sun Yet Sen. He recalledan encounter with a full grown ostrich when checking a landing strip and couldn’tchase it off even when travelling at 40mph in a Land Rover! Julian ended byproposing a toast to Absent Friends.

5358 Mick York, with the aid of Gordon, held the in-house raffle, the winner ofthe £50 prize was 9638 Chris Smith. The main raffle draw followed, with the firstprize of £500 going to Mrs Joan Jack of Dundee (widow of 5858 M Jack), thesecond prize of £150 to Mr I Clarke of Stourbridge (son of the late 8317 R Clark)and the third prize of £100 to 10577 Jim Harris (Branch Treasurer - fiddle I hearyou say?). After expenses, £1,581 was raised forAssociation funds.

Unexpectedly, and to everyone’s delight theRAF bugler made his way between the tables, and gave a fantastic rendering of the Post HornGallop which was greeted with a standingovation.

The Chairman ended the formal part of theevening by expressing thanks, firstly to the staff of the club – to those who waitedon the tables, to the chef and his team and to Ed Camargo (Deputy Food andBeverage Manager) who once again paid attention to detail and assured we hadbeen well looked after. To the sub-committee of Jim Harris and Betty Simpson, who along with our event co-ordinator Parry Jones assisted by Kate Simmonshad planned and orchestrated this special evening. Finally, Mike thanked everyonefor attending, adding that the time had come for all to feel free to chat, listen, dance or repair to the bar.

Irish Gathering ReportThis year the Irish gathering was held in the home of Peter and Marjorie O’Haraon the picturesque Howth peninsula south of Dublin, on 9 September. Thefestivities commenced the previous evening at the Oar House seafood restauranton the quay. Followed by more nightcaps in the elegant Howth Yacht Club, wheremore members joined us.

Saturday morning saw foraging parties scouring Howth for supplies beforearriving at Peter and Marjorie’s, who greeted all warmly, and served a superbspread of hot and cold dishes, accompanied by liquid refreshment.

The gathering was the first after 5584 John Berry had passed on. John, together with 5586 Sandy Stokes, had organised these gatherings for many years.John's wishes were that he did not want a funeral but hoped something would besaid at the gathering and had left a bequest to assist with the proceedings.Examples of John’s work on behalf of the Regimental Association were on displaysurrounding his photograph. The President of the Regimental Association, AlanToms, paid tribute to the immense contribution John had made to thepreservation of the history of the BSAP and the many hundreds of pounds raised

from sales of John’s series of Books of the BSAP generated for the Branch. Initiallywith 6063 Alan Stock, he produced 21 books in the series finishing his finalvolume – Nyati, The Last Quartermaster.

the Outpost digitisation project. With others,he organised scanning Outposts, spendingmany hours patiently using his computer andsteadfastly refusing all offers of assistance toupgrade his equipment. The Association hasbeen provided with a splendid archive ofOutpost magazines. Alan quoted from thosementioning John and chronicling his life and

career, such as his attestation, mentions in stationnotes, marriage and so on.

John’s daughter, Nicky Hall, his brother Brianand sister-in-law Catherine attended the gathering. The Branch Chairman, Mike Coleman thanked theorganisers and all present for attending. Thecustomary group photo was taken, with discourseand reminiscences continuing until Marjorieannounced that it was not a proper Irish party unless there was singing, which shepromptly started in a fine voice. Choruses were sung loudly, Fred Punter wasdissuaded from singing Eskimo Nell. Les Burrow, of technological wizardry, managed to stream the words of songs onto the smart television enabling all tosing classics such as the Fields of Athernry, Molly Malone, the Mountains ofMourne and many others until about 10.30pm when the party broke up.

Many thanks are due to Peter and Marjorie for a truly memorable gathering, worthy successors to John Berry. Policing In The Real WorldCopied from One Police UK, a Twitter account

In the world inhabited solely by those in possession of armchairs and agendas,it would appear that everything ought to be a priority for the police. But, in the realworld inhabited by police officers and staff, things are a little less straightforward. In that other world, the police should be doing more of this - and more of that. Andmore of the other.

Back in the real world, doing more of one thing means - inevitably - doing lessof another. Because resources are a little bit stretched just at the moment.

And, in any case, if everything is a priority, then nothing is.In the real world, every victim of crime matters. But not all crimes are equal.

Some have to matter more than others. Domestic Violence, for example, has tomatter more than shoplifting. Any crime that has a child or vulnerable adult as itsvictim, has to matter more than one that doesn’t. And so on.

These realities have consequences for the decisions we make – and for the timeand effort we invest in responding to any one type of crime.

But, in the other world, it doesn’t quite seem to work that way. In that otherworld, it is possible both to criticise the police for failing to do enough aboutsomething as deadly serious as modern slavery and, at the same time, to criticisethem for attempts (however clumsy) to raise awareness of the very same issue.Equally, it is possible to berate the police for failing to do enough to engage è

The Next GenerationA brochure is enclosed with this issue of The UK Outpost. The title is The NextGeneration and this campaign is aimed at members' children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

The aim is to encourage them to engage with the Association in order tobecome aware of their family history via the activities of the BSAP, and to stressthe importance of getting a first-hand account of the history of Rhodesia andZimbabwe. By commending the next generation to support the Association it ishoped to continue to celebrate the history and camaraderie of the BSAP. Your help is needed to promote and support this campaign by persuading familymembers to join the Association, ensuring the long-standing reputation of theBSAP as one of the best police forces in the world. The campaign uses the phrase 'Don't be the generation which allows the BSAPheritage to fade into oblivion', so please pass this brochure to a family member orgo to the website where a copy can be downloaded and forwarded, or tell familymembers how to get a copy.

This brochure is available on the BSAP website and may be downloaded andprinted. Click on this link, <www.bsap.org> then select BSAP Network below themain image then click on United Kingdom from the drop-down menu.

with local communities and, simultaneously, to harangue them for attempting todo just that when they ought to be concentrating on something more serious.

The same people fail to see the irony in suggesting that the police do less Stop& Search, whilst demanding they do more to prevent murderous knife attacks.Or in complaining about visible (and smiling) armed police officers whilstexpecting them to be ready, at a moment’s notice, to respond to the latest terroristoutrage. In the other world, everything is binary – simply black or white, but in the realworld of policing, everything exists in shades of grey.

Those who offer opinions from armchairs have no responsibility for anythingother than the words they write and the things they say. They are not the men andwomen in the arena, operating on the inside of the blue and white cordon tape –where everything is complex and broken and horrifying and terrifying, incircumstances where there is no place for faint hearts. You don’t need to be braveto write headlines or cast stones. In their world, they have the luxury of hours and days and weeks and months – andthe privilege of perfect hindsight. In the real world, there are life or death decisions to be made in fractions ofseconds, in the face of hostility and harm, without anything approaching acomplete set of facts or a full understanding of a situation. In their world, peoplearen’t forgiven for making mistakes and, in thehead-long rush to apportion blame, are given noopportunity to learn from them.

But, in the real world, we make mistakes all thetime. And we need the confidence to be able toadmit to them and the courage to be able to learnfrom them.

In their world, it is perfectly possible to criticisethe police for not taking victims of crime seriouslyenough and, the following day, to criticise them fortaking victims too seriously.

In the real world, police officers tread endlesslyblurred lines.

In their world, everything is easy. In the real world, it is anything but.I’m no blind apologist for policing. We are capable of getting things terribly

wrong – and there should be no hiding from it when we do. The truth is that we areentirely imperfect – both individually and collectively.

But that’s how it is back in the real world. And I refuse to take my place amongst the inhabitants of that other place –

‘those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat’.That’s not for me. I’m a police officer.

Member i/c, Yukon StovesIn 1957 I was a full Corporal in the British Army serving with the 1st Battalion,Royal Norfolk Regiment (RNR), C Company stationed at Iserlohn in Germany. The Royal Norfolk Regiment, I might add, was the 9th Foot, formed in 1685, RoyalRegiment and very definitely pride of the line; no bias you understand.

In November of that year 5th Brigade HQ, of which the Regiment was amember, decided to hold a winter warfare camp at Willingen Village nearWinterberg and C Company RNR was tasked with providing logistical support as aDuty Company.

At the end of October we went to Willingen to find that the Chunkies (PioneerCorps), under the auspices of the Royal Engineers, were building severalpermanent timber buildings such as officers’ mess, cookhouse, ablutions, stores, generator house, etc.

Our job was to put up twenty four marquees and eight bell tents; themarquees as living quarters, the tents for officers and stores, to receive thosetroops from the brigade who had been chosen to undergo ski and winter warfaretraining. We also did rotational guard duties. This was to be carried out in verycold conditions with snow on the ground.

Putting up the tents and marquees took us about three weeks as the groundwas iron hard and in addition to tent pitching we had to level the general camparea plus the ground on which the tents were to be placed. Fortunately we wereassisted by an RE Bulldozer, and then we put duckboards into all the livingquarters.

Duckboards were also used for access paths between the living quarters andfrom there to the rest of the camp. Duckboards look like the slatted boards seenin showers but much bigger, with boards closer together and held together withiron bands.

It sounds a long time but everything had to be unloaded from the nearby railhead into trucks, off loaded at camp and then manhandled into place. It took fourmen to lift one heavy duckboard.

Each living quarter (marquee) was then given a number which was displayedoutside. When that was finished beds, iron, other ranks with mattress, one, forthe use of were issued 20 to a marquee, plus lockers, steel, other ranks, for theuse of dozens (one-twelfth) to each bed space. Officers’ bell tents had bettermade beds and lockers. Each bed space therefore had a bed with a locker on itsleft, ten to each side, all of which were put in by us.

There was electric light supplied by the generator until 22:30 hours, food wasreasonable and Yukon stoves provided the heat. Although rough to start with wewere very comfortable once we had put everything in place. The British Army wasalways very good at making itself comfortable under any circumstances and withconsiderable ingenuity.

As remarked, the weather was very cold all the time as, the camp was high up inthe Winterberg Mountains, so one wore two pairs of socks, long johns, pyjamas, shirt, denims, sleeveless leather jerkins and gloves for work. Greatcoats were onlypermitted at night or on guard.

It was at this time that I was made Corporal i/c Yukon stoves, given a party offour private soldiers and a short course in their use by the Royal Engineers whichconsisted, in the time honoured manner, of a quick run through, as they werereturning to barracks for Christmas.

A simple machine we were told but were a bit put off by the glint in theEngineer’s eye and the cynical, ‘Any questions, no, good, good luck, nothingshould go wrong, sign here’. Then he left rather hurriedly, we thought.

As it turned out we were to need all of that good luck. The Yukon Stove was a survivor from World War II. It consisted of an oblong

iron box, on four sturdy iron legs which was placed inside the marquee wallroughly in a central position; one stove to each marquee.

A metal pipe had been welded into the back of the box. One end of the metalpipe was attached to a round metal burner pierced with holes round its top andwhich was situated and welded inside the centre of the box. The box in turn wasenclosed in a thick wire mesh protective covering and was placed inside themarquee.

The other end of the metal pipe was short, protruded out of the metal box anda long sturdy rubber tube was fitted on to it which in turn went out of themarquee through a wall joint. This end had a control tap with spring clip whichheld the rubber tube onto the metal pipe.

Outside the marquee, about three feet from the tent wall was an iron standabout six feet high and with a cage at the top to hold a four-gallon jerrycan at anangle, positioned opposite the stove. The rubber tube, already mentioned, wasthen connected to this jerrycan with a nozzle on the jerrycan cap, which in turnwas held in place by yet another spring clip and controlled by yet another tap.The petrol flow was therefore controlled by a series of taps and regulated so thatit drip fed the burner and although Heath Robinson, actually worked very well ifone was very careful. The stoves gave off a surprising amount of heat andactually glowed when well maintained.

However the whole contraption had to be properly regulated with an even flowof petrol and the risk of fire was ever present. Any elf and safety inspectors wouldhave done their nut but luckily they would not be around for another 40 years.

Our job was to service the stoves daily when the skiers had left camp for skiinstruction, clean the burners, top up the petrol in the jerrycans, deal with anycomplaints and generally check all was well.

To be continued in the next issue.

The Queen's Flame Lily BroochThere is a fascinating tale behind the Queen's favourite brooch. It was with her atthe very start of her reign and it remains with her today. The priceless flame lilybrooch has been among her favourite pieces of jewellery since she was presentedwith it for her 21st birthday. For one Shropshire man the brooch has a specialsignificance because it was made by his father. Eric Kippin handcrafted thediamond and platinum brooch while working for Cartier inJohannesburg in 1947.

It is thought to feature around 300 diamonds on aplatinum base and was presented to the then PrincessElizabeth as a gift from all 42,000 school children inSouthern Rhodesia.

Each child had given a tickey - a silver threepence - topay for the brooch which was created in the shape of theflame lily, Rhodesia’s national flower. It was given to theyoung Princess Elizabeth while she toured southern Africawith her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and her sister Princess Margaret.

The Princess Elizabeth so valued the brooch that shehad it in her possession when she visited Kenya five yearslater. It was during that trip she learned of the death of her father and she waswearing the brooch the first time she stepped on British soil as monarch after herflight home in February 1952.

Over the years the Queen has worn the flame lily during many significantoccasions. She wore the jewel during her televised Christmas speech in 2011and most recently when she visited the Cartier Queen's Cup polo tournamentat Windsor.

Leslie Kippin, 70, a retired printer, who has lived in Shropshire for more than30 years, revealed his father had engraved his initials on the brooch. Mr Kippintravelled to Buckingham Palace to inspect the brooch and identify his father'smicroscopic initials.

Your LettersThe Editor declares the right to edit, or decline to acknowledge or print letters.Anonymous letters will not be accepted, but members may opt to have theiridentity withheld.Hi Parry, walking through Paddington station yesterday I visited The Savannahshop at the foot of the first down escalator to buy some droewors and a gemsquash. The system works! If anyone does travel through Paddington from main line to underground I thinkyou might enjoy visiting The Savannah. Andrew hails from the Eastern Districts.204556 Caroline Witts

Hello Parry, I was shocked and somewhat surprised by the letter, written by oneof our members who wished to remain anonymous, regarding the Photo Galleryof UK Branch members published in the UK Outpost. As the instigator of the gallery, I feel that I should add my thoughts on thematter. The BSAP, as a Force, failed to exist after independence in 1980, withformer members moving to other parts of the world, where many joined thevarious Association Branches in order to maintain their contact with the Force. In my experience, members attending Branch functions invariably discusswhere they had been stationed, their experiences whilst serving and what hadhappened to former members with whom they had served and hadn’t seen foryears. It was for this reason that I thought that a gallery of recent photos of UKBranch members would help to re-ignite these memories. After discussion with the then Editor of the Outpost, the first gallery ofphotos was published, over six years ago, in Issue 79 – Winter 2011 and haveappeared in each issue since. To date some 186 former members’ photos haveappeared in the magazine, each appearing in Force Number order, thus enablingmembers who read the Outpost to anticipate when their own photo is likely toappear. To date, apart from this letter, I have only received positive commentsregarding the gallery. Branch members have sent me their photo to include inthe gallery, asked why their photo hadn’t yet appeared and even requested copiesof their gallery photo. So not everyone dislikes the Photo Gallery. I intend to continue with the Photo Gallery, subject to the approval of theEditor. If any member does not wish their photo to appear, then they shouldcontact me (details are at the bottom of each gallery page) or the Editor andadvise either of their wishes. Regards, 5248 Alan Lane

Murder in Ross CampThe recent mass murders in Las Vegas set me thinking that such incidents thoughrare are not unknown. Many countries will have experienced such tragedies. Forexample, Dave Blacker dealt with a series of deaths when a mentally ill Europeanpatient failed to self-medicate and ran amok with a large kitchen knife. I think hekilled six people.

The CID Duty Sections were on immediate stand-by from 08:00 on Saturday to07:59 on the following Saturday. Throughout that week there would be a DSO onduty from 16:00 to 24:00 each day and a DPO on duty from 20:00 to 04:00 thefollowing day who both had specific instructions to advise the Duty CID Officer ofany serious crime or incident.

For the week starting on Saturday 3 December 1977 I was Duty CID Officer. Onthe Sunday afternoon I was relaxing at home, when at 19:45 I received a phone callthat there had been a shooting at Ross Camp (the main residential compound forPolice in Bulawayo). By the time I arrived with DCI Duncan McDermid most of theaction had ended. It transpired that D/Sgt Banda Khumalo (a highly regardeddetective) of SB Bulawayo had obtained a BSAP issue P1 pistol and had shot andkilled four civilians and a fifth, who later died, in Mzilikazi. He then went to the RossCamp obtained his own legally held, privately owned shotgun and attacked chiShonamembers in Ross Camp, killing two members, one member’s wife and five juveniles.

During the disturbance Riot Standby had been called out and NSPO RobertFlomes shot and wounded D/Sgt Khumalo, before Sergeant Moyo, despite havingbeen shot in the leg by Khumalo, took the shotgun from him and beat him to deathwith the butt. The butt was completely shattered from the force of the blows.

DCI McDermid and I arranged for the scenes to be protected and guards placedas required. When the number of dead and injured had finally been consolidated itwas found 13 had been killed and 16 injured. Nine of the dead and 15 of thewounded were shot in Ross Camp.

It appears that Khumalo, a member of the Matabele royal Khumalo clan, whoapparently had little regard for those who were not of the Khumalo clan, and utterlydespised chiShonas, was mightily upset that his sister had become engaged to achiShona. The family and clan insult was too much. He had been drinking and themore he drank, the more incensed he became. He had a family argument in Mzilikaziand drove away in a raging fury.

Because of his duties in Special Branch Khumalo may well have been issuedwith a P1 pistol for his personal protection. It appears he collected this pistol andreturned to Mzilkazi where he commenced his murderous assault. His pistol emptyof rounds, he then went to Ross Camp, collected his shotgun and went on thedeadly rampage against chiShona members and their families. At the subsequentinquest, evidence was led that Khumalo had drunk at least a bottle of brandy, and had made many threats against chiShona people.

It is one of the darker, unhappy moments in the history of the BSAP.6609 Parry Jones

Back in New Zealand he joined the Akarana Rifle Club in Auckland where hisweekly trip to the rifle range was approximately 50km there and back and hewould drive himself. This continued until his 98th birthday when on his mandatorybi-annual review, he lost his driver's licence on advice from his doctor. This put astop to his shooting. He was a superb long range shot and won the NorthAuckland long range championship on several occasions. In 2014, Bill celebratedhis centenary among family and friends in Saint Heliers where he received a letterfrom HM the Queen, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, and the Mayor of
