Welcome It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 6th National Show at the Telford International Exhibition Centre. This the 47th National Show, and my second as President.
I hope you all enjoy the show which is a result of a great deal of hard work by the Trustees & Show Committee over the last year, the staff at Telford and the volunteers who make the whole show work over the weekend. It’s not too late to volunteer to help at this year’s show, even if you only have a couple of hours it will be greatly appreciated.
There are many trade stands where you can stock up on those items that you will need for next year or as presents to yourself and loved ones. We are very fortunate to have a number of sponsors this year and we thank them for their support, which helps with the smooth running of the show, and enable them to promote their products. Please consider supporting these businesses when making your purchases either at the show or in the future.
There is a sales section where you can obtain some new stock or different breeds to add to your stock and bloodlines. We can now take card payments in this section too.
This year we are having a prize draw and have sent tickets out in advance. If you would like to donate a prize, please let any of the Trustees know, that would be greatly appreciated. There is also the challenge prize fund. Check out the information on page 22.
It at this show that the Poultry Club of Great Britain holds its AGM and all members are welcome to attend.
I look forward to meeting you over the weekend and hope that you all enjoy the show! Kindest regards Paul Kerfoot President PCGB

About Avian Influenza How to spot avian influenza There are 2 types of avian influenza. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is the more serious type. It is often fatal in birds. The main clinical signs of HPAI in birds are: • swollen head • blue discolouration of neck and throat • loss of appetite • respiratory distress such as gaping beak, coughing, sneezing, gurgling, rattling • Diarrhoea • fewer eggs laid • increased mortality Clinical signs can vary between species of bird and some species may show minimal clinical signs (ducks and geese). Low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) is usually less serious. It can cause mild breathing problems, but affected birds will not always show clear signs of infection. The severity of LPAI depends on the type of bird and whether it has any other illnesses. Anyone who keeps poultry must keep a close watch on them for any signs of disease, and must seek prompt advice from their vet if they have any concerns. How Avian Influenza is spread The disease spreads from bird to bird by direct contact or through contaminated body fluids and faeces. It can also be spread by contaminated feed and water or by dirty vehicles, clothing and footwear. The avian influenza virus changes frequently, creating new strains, and there is a constant risk that one of the new strains may spread easily among people. But there is no evidence that any recent strain of avian influenza has been able to spread directly between people. Avian influenza is not an airborne disease. Advice for the public Some strains of avian influenza can pass to humans, but this is very rare. It usually requires very close contact between the human and infected birds. Based on what is known about the H5N8 strain, the risk to public health is considered very low. There have never been any recorded cases of H5N8 in humans. More information on avian influenza in people is available from your relevant public health authority.
15
The Food Standards Agency advises that bird flu does not pose a food safety risk for UK consumers. Properly cooked poultry and poultry products, including eggs, are safe to eat. If you employ people who work with poultry or work with poultry yourself, you can also read Health and Safety Executive advice on protecting workers from avian influenza. Wild birds If you find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, you should report them by calling Defra’s national helpline: 03459 33 55 77. By collecting and testing those birds, the Government can better understand how the disease is distributed geographically and identify the species affected. APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) publish a report (updated regularly) on findings of highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu) H5N8 in wild birds in Great Britain.

They have also produced the following GB guidance document: Biosecurity and preventing disease in captive birds See the DEFRA advice sheet How to Keep your Birds Safe (whilst the sheet has been produced for use in England, the principals within it are universal in terms of biosecurity of poultry). Source: www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-bird-flu#about-avian-influenza
About Newcastle Disease (Fowl Pest) Background Following a number of outbreaks of a virulent strain of Newcastle Disease in small poultry flocks, commercial layers and other captive birds in Belgium, Luxemburg and the Netherlands during 2018, APHA experts have advised that the risk of a disease outbreak in Great Britain has been raised from low to Medium (meaning ‘outbreak likely to occur’). Risk Although the risk has increased, government has advised that subject to heightened vigilance we are still able to go ahead with the show/market/gathering subject to extra vigilance and rigid compliance with the biosecurity plan. As an added precaution, as organisers of the gathering, we have decided to require all exhibitors to complete and sign this declaration, confirming that they have not purchased birds or travelled from outside of the UK within the last 21 days and that to the best of your knowledge, their birds do not appear to have Newcastle Disease or have not been in contact with birds showing any symptoms.
16
Requirement for Organisers and Participants
Organisers must provide the above disease information, and Exhibitors must sign a Newcastle Disease declaration in addition to, or in conjunction with the Avian Influenza declaration (at time of writing) and hand to the gathering Organiser or Biosecurity Officer on arrival and strictly before entry to the gathering. Failure to produce these documents) duly signed and completed will result in birds being prevented from entering the gathering premises. How to spot Newcastle Disease As the disease develops affected birds may show some of the following signs: • Respiratory distress such as gaping beak, coughing, sneezing, gurgling or rattling • Nervous signs characterised by tremors and paralysis and twisting of the neck • Unusually water faeces (diarrhoea) that are yellowish-green in colour • Depression • Lack of appetite • Mortality.
Affected birds may also suddenly produce fewer eggs and eggs that are laid may be soft-
shelled. The disease may lead to intense clinical signs, with a sudden onset leading to likely
death. Or it may have a lesser affect, with breathing problems and lower egg production the
only detectable clinical signs.
How Newcastle Disease is spread The disease is spread by direct contact with bodily fluids of infected birds, especially their faeces. It can also be spread indirectly through people and objects that have been in contact with infected birds, or their excretions (such as faeces). Objects that can carry the disease include: • Vehicles • Equipment • Clothing • Water and Feed. The disease can spread from wild to kept birds. Pigeons may carry pigeon paramyxovirus, which can cause Newcastle Disease in kept birds.

Biosecurity Information for Poultry Gatherings Participants
Participants must familiarise themselves with the symptoms of Avian Influenza and other notifiable
diseases and should take all reasonable steps to minimise the risk of spread of such diseases through
adopting pro-active biosecurity measures including, but not limited to:
Minimise the movement of birds between enclosures, and between sites
Ensure clean footwear before and after visits, and between sites
Take steps to deter wild birds, particularly waterfowl
Feed and water birds under cover and remove any spillages
Execute an effective programme of vermin control
Maintain good cleanliness and hygiene, regularly disinfect hard areas
Secure poultry enclosures with appropriate fencing to deter wild birds
Use of disinfectant mats or foot dips between buildings
Before entering a poultry gathering, participants must:
• Not enter if the place of origin of the birds is within an area of the UK which is under
restrictions relating to notifiable avian disease (including Prevention, Protection and
Surveillance Zones)
• Not enter birds that have attended a poultry gathering in the previous 13 days, or if new birds
have been brought onto the premises of origin in the past 13 days
• Inspect the health of all birds at the place of origin before departure
• Not move birds if there are any signs, or suspicion of any disease
• Transport birds in clean solid-bottom and sided carriers
• Use clean bedding material at the start of the journey, on the date of departure, which must be
contained within the carrier at all times.
On arrival to the gathering, participants must:
• Present themselves visibly clean, free from faecal contamination, feathers, or other bedding
matter with unsoiled footwear or over-boots
• Present a signed declaration, confirming:
The origin of the poultry is not from within a restricted area
The identified birds are healthy, and
They will follow the instructions of the poultry gathering licence • Ensure their birds remain isolated from all other birds, until each has been individually
inspected by a named poultry expert
• Present each carrier (and each bird therein) for a health inspection before entering the
gathering
• Be prepared to surrender any bird that fails the initial health inspection into isolation for a
further examination by a veterinary surgeon, or in the case of suspected Avian Influenza, an
APHA veterinary inspector
• Assist in the clean-up of any spilled bedding (from carriers) immediately by double-bagging and
spraying with an approved disinfectant for use against poultry diseases – supplied by the
poultry gathering organiser.
18
At the end of the gathering participants must:
• Remove all their birds and carriers from the gathering venue
• Inspect each bird for signs of ill health, notifying the gathering organiser and/or poultry expert if
disease is suspected
• If disease is suspected; isolate those birds for a veterinary inspection and if Avian Influenza is
suspected APHA must be notified immediately (as per the organiser’s Contingency Plan)
• In the case of suspected Avian Influenza, no birds should leave the premises until an APHA
veterinary inspector has permitted the movement.
On Return to the place of origin, gathering participants must:
• Inspect the general health of all birds before removing from the carrier
• Isolate birds returning to the place of origin for a minimum of one week, observing their health
throughout that time
• Notify the gathering organiser immediately if ill health or disease is suspected
• Dispose of waste material from the carriers, ideally through heated composting for a minimum of
42 days then applied to land as fertiliser
• Not re-enter any birds (existing or purchased) to participate in a gathering for at least 13 days
after returning from another gathering.

You’ve Got To Be
£500.00 Prize Money Pot up for grabs at the PCGB National Show 2019
This year will see the introduction of a massive £500.00 challenge prize money pot to be awarded to
the Supreme Champion exhibit at the National Show 2019. The show will be held at Telford
International Centre on Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December.
However, as the saying goes: “You’ve got to be in it to win it!” There will be an option on the entry form
of paying £5.00 to enter the pot. If you have ‘ticked the box’ and added this to your overall entry then
you can win the £500.00 if you are awarded Supreme Champion. It’s as simple as that!
So if you think you have a potential prize-winning exhibit, tick the box or add to your entry form to be
in with a chance of scooping the jackpot. Only one £5.00 per exhibitor is required (not per entry). If
your name is in the pot you’re in with a chance.
Good luck to all and get rearing those Champions. Nothing like a little incentive for some healthy
competition!
Terms and Conditions
• Each exhibitor may only enter the Supreme champion challenge prize pot once.
• To enter, each exhibitor must tick the box on the entry form and pay £5 with their entry in order to be able to have the chance to win the challenge prize pot.
• The prize pot will only be paid out to the exhibitor of the supreme champion exhibit if they have entered the challenge prize pot.
• The prize of £500.00 will be paid out to the supreme champion exhibitor if they have entered the challenge prize pot.
• In the case of the exhibitor of the supreme champion exhibit not entering the prize pot then the prize money will be donated to the charity ‘The Poultry Club of Great Britain’.
• Any other monies raised from the entering of the challenge prize pot will also be donated to the charity ‘The Poultry Club of Great Britain’.
• No late entries will be taken.
• The Championship Judge’s decision of the Supreme Champion exhibit is final.
• Payment of the monies will be made after the National Show to the winning exhibitor by cheque.
