AMERICAN HERITAGE AMERICAN ACADEMY Patriots’ UPDATE Newsletter for Heritage/Academy Parents April 2014 Alumni Provide Helpful Advice to Seniors On March 7, American Heritage welcomed back to campus 15 alumni from different schools around the country: Boston University, University of Notre Dame, University of Florida, University of Pennsylvania, Northeastern University, Villanova and University of Central Florida. The students visited senior English classes to share their college experiences. When asked what Heritage class prepared them most for college, “English” was the most unanimous answer. Specifically, graduates stated how vital the high school research paper was to their college success. “When we peer review a paper, I am always shocked at how poorly papers are written by the other students,” stated one alumnus. Veronica Mingrone (University of Florida) was told she didn’t need to come to her first semester writing course because her work was so far above that of her classmates. Other popular classes that assured college success were Chemistry, Economics, Calculus and Statistics. Overall, no matter what school Heritage graduates enrolled in, they felt extremely well prepared for college-level work. Heritage seniors asked questions about their many and varied concerns about college life, in general. Believe it or not, they worry about doing laundry! They also have concerns about who will take care of them when they get sick and what happens if they don’t get along with a roommate. Seniors looked to the alums to understand the pros and cons of a large college versus a small college, a private one versus a public one, and a cold zone college versus a warm zone location. They also listened intently as the alumni shared advice on how to make their final decision. The alumni were in those shoes not too long ago, so they were able to relate very well to soon-to-be graduates. Happy to re-visit without the required Heritage uniforms are Andrew Spas, Jessie Randolph, Daniel Spas, Mrs. Bikoundou, Jake Edelstein, Nicole Enciso, Spencer Simon, Michael Montessi. Heritage Fifth Grader Lobbies in Tallahassee

On March 11th, Josh Hoffman, a fifth grader in Mrs. Silverman’s class took a trip to Tallahassee to lobby Congress on a bill that would help provide access to healthcare for 3,500 more pregnant women in Florida each year. Josh is a National Ambassador for the March of Dimes and was sent to our State Capitol to give a Keynote Address titled, “The Cost of Premature Birth to Me.” He met with many House and Senate Reps as an advocate for moms and babies in Florida, and he received a warm welcome from local District Rep. Katie Edwards who brought Josh to her seat on the House Floor and announced him during the Session of Congress that afternoon.

SPRING FLING 2013March 15-Art, Music, Drama and FUN!

The annual Fine Arts Festival and Spring Fling took place on Saturday, March 15. Students in grades PK-12 sang, danced, acted and played musical instruments throughout the day in various locations around campus. In addition, student artwork was on display in the Fine Arts Building. Outside, there were games and activities sponsored by student organizations, refreshments and incredible raffle and silent auction tables hosted by the Lower School PTO. The entire back field became a play area for small children. The area was filled with bounce houses, bungee jumping and giant slides. It was, as usual, a wonderful family day on campus.

Sights and Sounds of Spring Fling

Happy Spring! Here at the Lower School PTO, the coming of Spring means one big thing —Spring Fling! Our PTO’s second biggest fundraising event of the year, Spring Fling was held on Saturday, March 15, and was filled with 75 great Raffle Prizes and a huge Silent Auction with one-of-a-kind themed baskets, gift certificates, sports lessons, exciting experiences and even live animals like dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and hermit crabs, that filled tables extending the length of the basketball court.

Every year, the PTO joins efforts with the Fine Arts Department whose purpose in this endeavor is to raise funds to support the Center for the Arts and provide scholarship opportunities for Upper School students. It’s a fun AHS family day when the kids enjoy carnival rides, games, face painting, and performing on stage. Parents get to enjoy the brilliant performances and art showcases while winning some great raffle and auction prizes and socializing with good friends and families.

Special thanks to Rhonda Lewis, Fundraising Chair, and Hillary Joffe for heading up such a grand event, and to everyone who helped make the day a huge success—our PTO Board, all of our Room Parents and families who generously contributed to all of the incredible classroom baskets, art projects and raffles. Thank you to everyone who came out to support us!

The money raised will fund our remaining programs and events scheduled through to the end of the year. In a few weeks, we will celebrate Earth Day, April 22, with a week of off-campus community service projects and on-campus interactive activities designed to protect and honor our planet. Another fun-filled week will take place the second week in May from May 5-9 when we will celebrate all of our amazing teachers, faculty and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week. Mark your calendars for May 14 when we will host another fun Dinner with the Principals. Our final event is on the last day of school, our biggest event of the year—Spirit Day on May 30th. Spirit Day is a fun-filled day when our children can play all day as we congratulate them for a job well-done all year.

We hope you will join us for our next PTO General Meeting on Thursday, April 3, at 8:30 a.m. We really appreciate all of your continued help and support with our PTO-sponsored activities, because together we really do make a big difference!

Several great events are still ahead including the very special Senior Breakfast (April 10), High Honors Breakfast (April 15) and our Staff Appreciation Lunch (May 2). The Senior Breakfast has become a tradition at our school and this year’s committee, Cyndi Richards and Marta Messana, promise this event will be extra special.

The students anxiously await the Third Quarter High Honors Breakfast. Our thanks go to our committee chairs: Yvette Broder, Li-Ling Chin, and Stephanie Gilfarb and our team of amazing volunteers. Feeding approximately 700, hungry Upper School students is made possible because of this incredible group of parent volunteers. For the last breakfast, we had 28 people on our volunteer team! We look forward to another fantastic event.

The Staff Appreciation Lunch is our way of showing appreciation to faculty and staff for going the “extra mile” all year long. Co-Chairs: Beth Adams, Stacy Goldstein, Felice Mehaber, & Becky Sputo along with the committee are planning a great event and will gladly welcome more volunteers!

Our April PTO meeting is Thursday, April 17, beginning at 8 a.m. and the agenda will include election of officers for next year. The April Coffee Talk program is “Nutrition and Education” presented by one of the members of the Academy guidance staff. Plan to join us!
