An emphasis on the acquisition of both written and oral communication skills

If you are interested in learning more about the IB program, please contact Ms. Mary Hough, IB Coordinator, at [email protected].

The conference provides you with an opportunity to discuss the individual progress and achievement of your child with his/her teachers/counselor. If you wish to speak with your child’s teachers/counselor you will have to schedule an appointment. The form will be located on the school website by October 1. Give the completed form to your child, who will give it to each teacher with whom you wish to speak. The teacher will indicate on the form the time and loca-tion of the appointment. PATRIOT NEWSLETTER August 2015 8

Freehold Township High School has been designated by the Anti-Defamation League as “No Place for Hate” for the 2014-2015 school year. This recognition celebrates commitment and support for establishing anti-bullying and acceptance activities within the school environment. No Place for Hate is a national initiative that supports educators and students in ensur-ing that their school environment is one where anti-bullying awareness strat-egies and acceptance practices are prevalent and embedded as an intrinsic part of their school’s culture.

Students and staff at Freehold Township High School participate in many activities throughout the school year which help to build a respectful, inclusive, and safe school community where all students can thrive. Such activities included Respect Week with a “Be a Hero" theme, involving the entire school community participating in activities throughout the week. The school's Fine and Ap-plied art students who designed and constructed a Tolerance Ship once again displayed sails for all to see outside the media center. Members of the Human Relations Committee also participated in Chal-lenge Day, where students participated in one-on-one and group activities encouraging each other to look beyond their comfort zone and make friends with others that they would not normally associate with. During Pride Week a leadership luncheon was conducted with a guest presenter. This day long interactive event focused on encouraging students to become leaders within their school and commu-nity and to confront their own bias feelings towards others. Dr. Michael Fowlin presented a 9th grade assembly entitled "You Don't Know Me Till you Know Me", addressing sensitive topics of race, dis-crimination, violence prevention and personal identity. Detective Dave D'Amico of the Monmouth County Bias Crimes Unit presented a 10th grade assembly focusing on bias, stereotyping, and bully-ing. The school's Lead for Diversity students plan and decorate a bi-monthly bulletin board promot-ing harmony and respect among the student body. Lead for Diversity students also attended a week long residential summer retreat where students throughout New Jersey engaged in experiential work-shops, small group discussions, and action planning focused on social justice and diversity issues.

The ADL recognized Sophia Blac, Class olf 2015, with a certificate of recognition for her commit-ment to making Freehold Township High School a No Place for Hate® school.

ATTENDANCE AND CREDIT WITHDRAWAL POLICIES

Mastering course proficiencies requires regular attendance in school. The purpose of the attendance policy is to improve student attendance and thus enhance student learning and achievement. Early warning of excessive absences and cuts from class will help to alert parents and students and thus encourage improved attendance and avoid withdrawal of credit for the course. The chart below provides the schedule of parent notification, interventions and consequences of excessive absences.

Students who exceed the maximum number of absences or cuts for a course will NOT receive credit for the course and receive a grade of “W” for the marking periods and a failing grade, E, for the course. The course, if needed for graduation or is a prerequisite for a higher level course, will have to be made up the following school year or at a tuition summer school. All absences are counted towards credit withdrawal, including those documented with notes. Absentee notes must be submitted by parents within 48 hours of the student’s return to school and will be reviewed if an appeal hear-ing to reinstate credit is requested by the student and their parent/guardian. Parent/guardians and students will be notified by mail if credit is withdrawn in a course; and also notified by correspondence , via the Parent Portal. If an appeal is re-quested the Faculty Attendance Review Committee will meet with the student and parent/guardian to review the case and determine whether credit should be reinstated. Appeals for full year courses will be held during the final weeks of the course. Appeals for first semester courses will be held in February.

WORKPLACE TRAINING PROGRAM: INNOVATIONS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

Special Education Week was extra special this year for the Workplace Training Program (WTP) at Freehold Township High School. The New Jersey School Board Association selected 9 programs for their 2014 Innovations in Special Education Award. The WTP was honored to receive this award! Teachers and Administrators were recognized at an awards ceremony that took place on May 12, 2014 at the Westin in Princeton. The Workplace Training Program was judged on content, innovation, integration into the curriculum, parent/community involvement, evaluation strategies and effectiveness of meeting student’s needs.

On May 22, 2014 the “award winning” Workplace Training Program showcased their program at the annual Dare To Dream Student Leadership Conference at Middlesex County College. Keynote speaker, Kweli Taylor, gave a moving speech about overcoming her challenges with Cerebral Palsy. The students conducted a breakout session where they presented the “Do’s and Don’ts of a job interview. They performed a skit on how specific behavior can affect the hiring process. Everyone in the audience took home a pocket resume.

All seniors who are applying for parking permits, and their parent/guardian, are re-quired to attend a driver safety program. The final makeup program will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at Colts Neck High School. Students and parent/guardians must bring identification to the program and sign both a certificate of attendance and an attendance roster at the end of the program. Parking permits will be issued, on a space-available basis, after both the senior and their parent/guardian have attended the presen-tation. Parking for seniors that have applied and have met all district requirements has been assigned. You will be notified by phone when to come to the Little Theatre to get your park-ing hang tag. Parking hang tags will be distributed in August. If you have applied for parking and have not met all the district requirements or still owe a fine you will be notified via mail or telephone. All fines must be paid prior to getting your hang tag. All seniors must display a hang tag in order to park on campus on the first day of school.

NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARK ON THE CAMPUS WITHOUT A

VALID HANG TAG.

SAT Word of the Day

The SAT Word of the Day continues to enjoy a role at FTHS. Each morning, as the new word is introduced in isolation and in context, students are reminded of the importance of having advanced vocabulary in their lives.

The Spit Fire assembly, overseen by Ms. Katie Quinn, was a huge success this year . Many of our talented

students were showcased in spoken word poetry and in song. The t shirt sales from this competition raised money for senior scholarships in the English department.

Many students this year were winners in the Asbury Park Press’s “Student Voices” essay contests throughout the year. First – third place winners include freshmen Ashlie Pitt, Brandon Block, and Lindsey Golotko. Honorable Mention winners include freshmen Erin Berschta, Brandon Block, and Gustavo Lagos and soph-omore Ally Knighton. All of their essays can be read at the Patriot Press online.

English teacher Cheryl Lanza was selected as the Barnes and Noble My Favorite Teacher local award winner. Ms. Lanza was selected based on a poem that sophomore Mackenzie Kean wrote about her and then submitted. Both Mrs. Lanza and Mackenzie were honored at Barnes and Noble in March.

We had New Jersey State Championships, individuals and teams, in Boys & Girls Bowling, Track & Field, and Boys Swimming. School records were broken in Track & Field, Girls Swimming, Girls Bowling, and Girls Basketball. So many team and individ-ual athletic accomplishments were recognized. For the first time, FTHS had equestrians and fenc-ers. Our plaques and banners are continuously updated! Our new Twitter account is popular and updated constantly…follow them @TownshipScores. Athletics: Meet the Coaches Night is scheduled for Monday, August 24 at 6pm in the Audi-torium. All parents of fall athletes MUST attend this program that focuses on sportsmanship, school policies, and the coach’s expectations. Parents we need your support to ensure a successful athletic season! Activities: Freshmen, Get involved! – try them out! It has been inspiring to see the students who became involved in these clubs and activities, and then became the leaders. Club and Activi-ties descriptions can be found on the SECA website. The Activities Fair will be held on October 14! The following activities had either county, regional, state, or national accomplishments: DECA, Forensics, FFA, FCCLA. The Pre-Med Club sponsored two blood drives two at the Township. The FTHS Newspaper started our first online newspaper, check out the Patriot Press! The Art Club painted the walls of FTHS to reflect the RESPECT themes for each class. The Octagon Club is always giving back to the community through volunteering. We have over 40 clubs, and if you want to propose an idea, please see me through January!

If you are interested in participating in a Winter Sport Basketball, Bowling, Ice Hockey, Swimming, Winter Track, and Wrestling

you must attend a sign up meeting on September 24th at 7:50 am in the Auditor ium. Please use the SECA website for information regarding extracurricular activities, athletic sched-ules, game changes, and physical information. To receive text messages or emails re-garding game changes/cancellations, use the RSchool today website. Click on www.shoreconferencenj.org and click on Freehold Township High School. Academics, though, are important. It is necessary to maintain academic eligibility to compete in athletics or participate in extracurricular activities. We are proud that fifteen athletes received Di-vision I scholarships from the Class of 2015! This was not an easy task for these students, but their commitment to academics only strengthened those accomplishments. Any ideas you have, please see me or email me! Looking forward to seeing the success, the news, the plaques, and banners from the Classes of 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019!

FORENSICS GOES TO NATIONALS!

At the NJ/NSDA District tournament, senior Mark Rinder, senior Craig Chikis and sophomore Sage O'Toole qualified for the National Speech & Debate League National Tourna-ment in Dallas, Texas. To qualify, students must finish in the top 3 in the state in their event. NSDA Nationals is the world's largest academic competition. Mark Rinder is the first student in NJ to "triple qualify" in his events. This is the maximum number of events that a students can even enter in at districts. The district chair, who has been coaching since 1988, said she can't remember this ever happening before. Since the NSDA rules state that a student can only compete in one event at nationals, Mark has selected International Extempora-neous Speaking as his event. Mark is rated as the 17th best extemper in the na-tion, which is actually quite impressive in itself as FTHS only goes to a handful

of "circuit" or national tournaments. There were 51 teams in Public Forum debate at the beginning of districts which is a double elimina-tion style tournament. Craig and Sage, who have only been partners once before, made it to the top 8 after 7 rounds which wound up being the last round. In this round, they debated the team of Ozbay and Malik from Princeton who are rated as the 2nd best team in the nation. Ozbay actually won Extemp Debate at nationals last year. Craig and Sage won this round on a 3-0 decision knocking that team out of the tournament and securing their spot at nationals.

No visitors are allowed to attend classes.

For security purposes we have implemented a buzzer system, so please limit the number of items being dropped off for your student. Parents/guardians dropping off items for their student are to leave the items at the security desk. Please make sure that all items are clearly marked with the student’s name and grade.

DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP STUDENTS ALL DOORS WILL BE LOCKED UNTIL 7:45 a.m. Do NOT DROP students off prior to 7:45, students will

not have access to the building (unless specific arrangements have been made with a teacher or a coach). Drop Off - Pull up as close to the main entrance, near the attendance office, as possible and discharge students as

quickly as possible. Pick Up - All vehicles must use the East entrance, closest to Route 9 and the gym. Please park in any space or

around the perimeter of the parking lot if no spaces are available. No cars will be admitted at the West Entrance, between 2:30 and 3:30 due to safety concerns and the large number of buses entering and leaving the campus.

When Students Need to Sign Out Early

Have them bring the note to the Attendance Office before home-room. The Attendance Office will call to confirm the note, a pass will be given to your child to leave class at the necessary time. This will eliminate unnecessary interruptions into a class.

PATRIOT NEWSLETTER August 2015 19

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL—DRESS CODE Parents and students are reminded that all FRHSD students must dress appropriately when coming to school. Disciplinary consequences for inappropriate dress are in the handbook.

Dress Code States: This Means:

Students may dress as they wish as long as it does not endanger their health or safety or the health or safety of other students.

You should use common sense when you dress for school, but the school staff will decide if an item jeopardizes anyone’s health or safe-ty.

Manner of dress must not create classroom disor-der or distract others.

The classroom teacher determines if clothing creates disorder or dis-tracts others. An item can cause a distraction either because of words or images printed on it or because of the amount of bare skin exposed.

Students should wear clothing which totally covers the torso. If wearing spandex pants the bottom of your shirt must reach your finger tips.

All shirts must have two sleeves or armholes. Halter, strapless or oth-er backless tops are not to be worn. The bottom of your shirt must reach the top of your pants. If you choose to wear low rise or saggy pants, make sure you also wear an extra long shirt so that NO bare skin is exposed. No part of your underwear should be visible.

Students should not walk barefoot in school and they must always wear some type of shoes, sneak-ers, sandals, etc.

Bedroom slippers, even fuzzy ones, do not meet this requirement and are not to be worn. State law requires that feet be completely covered in science labs. You will not be permitted to participate in lab and will receive a zero if your toes are exposed.

“Torn-off”, “half-shirts” or “muscle shirts” are not permitted for males, while “tube-tops” are not per-mitted for females.

“Torn-off” means either sleeve of the shirt has been ripped off. “Half-shirt” is one that does not go to the waist. “Muscle-shirts” refer to tank-tops for males. “Tube-tops” are strapless shirts that expose the midriff. None of these are to be worn to school.

Clothing more appropriate for beach wear (bathing suits, very short shorts, sleep wear, etc.) should not be worn to school.

The “etc.” refers to any beach attire INCLUDING very short shorts. A good rule to follow is that if you stand up with your hands at your sides, the bottom of your shorts should reach your fingertips. Skirts should be of a reasonable length. Walking up the stairs or bending over at a locker should not draw attention to body parts that should be covered.

Apparel with bias, offensive or profane messages will not be allowed Also, wearing or possessing items depicting or implying racial hatred, stereo-typing or prejudice will not be tolerated.

You may not think it offensive, but it could be to someone else, so do not wear it. School staff will determine if a message or image is of-fensive.

Specifically prohibited are sunglasses, hats, head-bands, bandanas, or other head coverings; metal chains, jewelry or accessory articles that have the potential to be used as a weapon, gang attire, facial markings that display non-school related symbol-ism.

“Du-rags” fall in the category of “other head coverings” that are not to be worn. The rest of the items listed are fairly self explanatory. If you are not sure if something is permitted, either ask a teacher or don’t wear it.
