Frank is the first English writer on anglingwho describes that mystical fish, the burbolt. ... There is alsoan interesting mention of three noted anglers of the time,Merrils, Fawklner, and Owldham, whom some biblio-graphies suppose to have written three separate anglingworks, since lost to the world. ... A notice of the work willbe found in the Retrospective review, vol. Viii, pp170-194, andalso in the Censura literaria The extreme rarity of the originaledition is somewhat exaggerated. We have knowledge offive or six copies”. S&W, which contain a lengthdescription.

HENRY, WALTER, army officer, surgeon, author, andsportsman; b. 1 Jan. 1791 in Donegal (Republic of Ireland),d. 27 June 1860 in Belleville, Upper Canada. He saw servicein the Peninsular War and at St. Helena during Napoleon's

captivity. The secondvolume deals exclusivelywith Canada. The auth-or, who was a notedpioneer in medicine inCanada, arrived here in1827 and was variouslystationed as staff surgeonat Quebec, Montreal,Kingston, York andH a l i f a x ( w h e r e h ebecame a great friend ofJudge Haliburton). Thebook contains interestingand colourful observat-ions on the Kingstoncholera epidemic in 1832,

the political situation and the 1837 rebellion. `` Fishing, which for Henry included detailed biological study, was ahobby in which he had engaged ardently since boyhood. This activity and his writing talent first merged in an 1837article on the habits of the salmon family and itsconservation. Under an appropriate nom de plume,Piscator, four long letters were published by Henrybetween 1839 and 1842 in the Albion, the weekly journal ofthe British emigrant community in New York City. In thesehe declared his eagerness to pursue “scientific, exciting, absorbing, glorious, imperial salmoncide.” The accounts offishing expeditions on Lake Ontario, the fast-flowingRivière Jacques-Cartier near Quebec, and Nova Scotia’splentiful Gold River are entertaining and gripping despitehis addiction to a baroque luxuriance of language.(DCB)Gregory Clark considered this “the scarcest Canadianfishing book”.

His Historyof Fly Fishing forTrout, a survey ofthe literature fromBerners to Land,is still a valuabler e f e r e n c e . ASummer on theTest is more limited and more factual than Green`s book, but its opening chapters that deal with the history of the Testas a fishing river is of more than passing interest, for he citesevidence even from the records of Romsey Abbey wheredwelt some gay and undisciplined nuns and severalabbesses who kept strict watch on the Test, a good source offish for fasting days of Lent. The later chapters do includesome fine reminiscent passages that clearly mark Hills as awriter of more than ordinary merit and a man deeply in lovewith this quiet from of recreation. Artist, hunter, angler, writer, and a friend of theliterary great, including Sir Walter Scott, Scrope fished theTweed fo r twentyyears. His book is par-tly practical and hecertainly knew all therewas then to kno wabout tackle, the tyingof flies, the habits off ish, and the mostsuccessful ways to catchthem. But the perman-ence of his work lies inhis reminiscences, hisconversations withother anglers and withg h i l l i e s , h i s f i n ehandling of dialogue, his skill in telling stor-ies, and in delving intofolklore. Extremelywell written, at timeslearned but never dull, his contribution to angling literatureis still a classic. - The illustrations are delightful and

early collector of angling books. Alfred Denison was theleading British collector of the late 19th century. Hiscollection was crucial to Westwood & Satchell’sbibliography ‘Bibliotheca Piscatoria’ (1883). He was alreadyan active collector when Heseltine’s book were dispersed in1871. It is likely that Denison bought this copy directly fromHeseltine or from his estate. Neither of the two sales ofDenison’s collection (1933 and 1956) contained a Scotcher.

The Fly Fisher's Legacy is one of the rarest books inangling literature; so rare that neither the Library of theBritish Museum, nor the National Libraries of Scotland orWales have a copy. WorldCat locates three copies - Harvard, Yale & Princeton. A recent unpublished privatecensus indicates eleven known copies among collectors andinstitutions.

“It is an important book for several reasons, not theleast being that it was the first angling book to contain acoloured plate illustrating some of the insects imitated byanglers. Also it was the first angling book devoted entirelyto fly-fishing and certainly one of the first to mention the useof stiffer rods and tapered lines..." (Jack Heddon, Scotcher Notes, 1975). One auction copy did not contain the names ofthe London booksellers.
