Search for the word "WebQuest" in any search engine, and you soon discover thousands of online lessons created by teachers around the world.

What is a WebQuest?

A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented online tool for learning, says workshop expert Bernie Dodge 1. This means it is a classroom-based lesson in which most or all of the information that students explore and evaluate comes from the World Wide Web.

Beyond that, WebQuests: can be as short as a single class period or as long as a month-long unit;usually (though not always) involve group work, with division of labor among students who take on specific roles or perspectives;are built around resources that are preselected by the teacher. Students spend their time USING information, not LOOKING for it.

The task at hand is to know what cyberbullying is and how to prevent it.

Students will be exposed to a unit on Cyberbullying An awareness will be brought up through scenarios, series of videos relating to behavior on line, Public Service Announcements along with informative question and answer learning experiences about Cyberbullying.

Students will be able to identify it, and what to do if they or someone they know is faced with being bullied on line.

If the final product involves using some tool (e.g., HyperStudio, the Web, video), mention it here.

Process ProcessWhat We Will Do:As a class, we will view a series of videos relating to Cyberbullying and proper on line behavior.In a class discussion we will identify the characteristics of a bully and cyberbullying and develop a definition of what Cyberbullying is.All students will take notes (typed or written) about the discussion.During the discussion a volunteer will record class notes in Microsoft Word displayed on the screen via the In-Focus Projector.Class Recorder will save the class notes in a shared file both the teacher and students can all access as a read-only file to revisit and review in between class sessions.Once we have viewed all the videos and composed our class definition of what Cyberbullying is, students will pair up to answer a series of questions regarding Cyberbullying to demonstrate the knowledge you have gained from previous class sessions and discussion.

Now that you have heard different scenarios relating to Cyberbullying, how it affects people and how you can reach out for help, you should be able to recognize cyberbullying and be able to react accordingly. It is important to know the signs and how to report the people who chose to abuse the internet. This will hopefully help you prevent this type of bullying now. Now that you have finished this webquest, do you feel as though you would be able to recognize this and be comfortable going to talk to someone about it? How would you handle being bullied over the internet? Have you ever unintentionally cyberbullied anyone?

This is designed to be taught to fifth grade computer classes. This lesson could be taught not fourth and sixth grade as well.

This lesson is done as a whole class. The students will work together to make their definitions and answer questions. The lesson should be taught in one class period, and if it runs over part of the next time class meets.

The teacher should be in the discussion only as much as to get the children thinking. This should be lead by the students with guidelines from the teacher. The teacher will present promts for what the children talk about.

The WebQuest model is best suited for learners who can navigate the Web on their own and can read the kinds of material commonly found on the Web. We can stretch the format to reach primary-aged learners, developmental English Language Learners and special populations by creating a facilitated WebQuest, one that requires an adult or older peer to drive things.

Use this page to create a script for that facilitator. The facilitator would print this page out and use it to guide their progress through the WebQuest.

This page will include step by step directions to the facilitator, including:

•First begin the discussion by asking the students what they think cyberbullying is and if they feel like a lot of people their are are affected by it. •Click on the first video to show the students different senarios of what cyberbullyin is like•Ask the students what they thought of that and then continue onto show the second video.•Have the students discuss that and why they feel like cyberbullying is an issue today.•Expect the students to be hesitant to talk about experiences they may have had because of embarrassment or because they were hurt by it before•Have the children discuss ways to prevent and help someone who had been bullyed over some form of technology and offer the students your help.

This should help the students be aware of the cyberbullying that is happening all the time around them. They will be able to identify signs of it and should be able to report it to anyone that they feel comfortable talking to. The students will know how badly someone feels when they are a target of cyberbullying and hopefully think twice to becoming a bully.
