Mummy Bear and Baby Bear, who all had a fond-

She put on her Snow White crocheted bib which her mother

and sac down to cake the weight offher matching bootees.

She tasted Daddy Bear’s porridge. That was too hot.

She tasted Mummy Bear’s porridge. That was too cold.

So she tasted Baby Bear’s porridge which wasJust right.

CinderellaOnce upon a time, there was a little girl called

^Cinderella.who was very sad indeed.

And with good reason. For it was the night of

Prince Charming’s ball, and her three ugly sisters

would not let her go.

Poor Cinders was sittuig in the scullery, crying, when suddenly

in a puff ofsmoke, a Fairy appeared.

"I’m your Fairytale Godmother,” she announced.

"And you shall go to the ball. But first, you need something to

wear. Luckily I have just the thing.

"A little crochet dress, I think. Worked mainly in trebles and

chains from neck to hem.

"You’ll be the belle ofthe ball. Especially with your matching

shoes. But mind you don’t lose even one of them.”

But ofcourse Cinderella did lose a shoe.

Wliich.aswe all know, wasjust as well, really. Because by losing

her shoe, she found her Prince.

ABES INTHEWOODHow they got there, no-one knew. But there

they lay, deep in the heart of the wood where no

human had trod before.

"Whooo are they?” asked the owL

"I don’t know.” warbled the sparrow in reply.

"But they look jolly strange to me.”

"Th-th-they 1-Ulook jolly c-c-cold to me,” chirped the chip-

munk."Whatever ch-th-they are.”

"Then we must doooo something,” said the owl, wisely.

And so he sent the sparrow, the blackbird and the great white

koolie bird even deeper into the forest to look for the oldwood witch.

They foundher under an ancient oak tree, knitting a scarfout

of daisy chains.

The birds swooped down, and told the witch about the strange

creatures in the forest.

"Ah,”saidthewitch."Theysoundlikebabiestomc.Vbu’dbcrter

keep them warm, my dears.”

The birds looked around but all they saw were a few old twigs

and dead leaves.

Page 6: Patons 242 Fairy Tales - ia801308.us.archive.org

"Then I shall make them something,” said the witch.

"The boy shall haveasweacer,inasimpleknitandpurldiamond

partem, and I think some plain shorts and shoes, to keep him extra

warm.

"Theprishallhave an angcltop with thesamcdiamondpartem

on the yoke and hem,and she had better have some shoes and p»nties

too, which ril cmbmider with some delicate lazy daisy flowers.

"And then I’ll makethem each a knittedcot cover,one pink,one

white, again using the diamond pattern, but I may just embroider

some more lazy daisies on the pink one.”

The witch tossed aside her knitting needles and picked up her

magic wand.

Immediately, the outfits appeared, and were just as she had

described them.

The birds picked themup in their beaks, mumbled thank you’s

and flew back to the babes in the wood.

Who slept happily ever alter.

7 HE SNOW QUEEN( '

Longagoandfarawa^inaverycoldcountry

yfS ' known as Finmark, there lived a naughty lictic boy^ called Kay

One day, quite by chance, Kay met the SnowQueen, whose touch ran like ice through your heart, and whose stare

could freeze a small sparrow at twenty paces.

The Snow Queen liked Kay, for he was as mischievous as she,

and carried him off in her sleigh to her F^lace, near the Arctic.

"Are you cold yet, Kay?” asked the Snow Queen icily.

Kay smiled. A snowflake melted. "Not at all,” he replied.

The Snow Queen drove on. "Are you cold yet, Kay?”Kay smiled again. Some mote snowflakes melted.

"Not at all,” replied Kay. "For I have my three coloured,

hat and mittens with contrasting colour bands that my grandmotherknitted for me in a stocking stitch.

"And I am very warm and cosy” he smiled.

At the word "warm,” pandemonium ensued.

The snow melted, the icicles dripped, and there was nothingleft of the Snow Queen but a la^e, grey puddle.DESICSNO. 9 IN FAIKYTAUiDK: PRAMSETOFIACKer.L£aGlNGS.tUT.MrrTSANDPKAMCX>VEIt

WASHING AND CARING FOR PATONS YARNSHand washing Is always best. For

yarns made mainly of wool use warmwater, a warm rinse, sguesEe out

between towels or spin-dry Inormsl

cyciel, then dry flat after easing into

shape. Do not dry in direct heat

(ridialors or fires). Do not dry while

handknita In direct sunlight. For

yarns made mainly of acrylics It is

important that you rinse in cold water

and if you spin-dry use the short

cycle.

A great many people now use wash-

ing machines. The ball band will

show whether the yarn you have

chosen is suitable for machine-

washing: if it is. follow these four

"golden rules".

1. Make sure the garment is knitted

correctly according to the Palons

pattern, on the correct needles to

the correct tension.

2. Don't have the water honer than

the recommended temperature.

3. Useihemachineonagemlecycle.4. Don't leave the garment in the

machine too long.

The wrappers on all Paions yarns

show the appropriate International

Textile Care Labelling Code symbolsfor the yarn. Examples are shownhere. The latest automsiic machines

have these Internetional Care Sym-bols, and provided your machine is

not connected to the domestic hot

water supply (when you need to be

careful about the heal) all you have to

HE WILDSWANSThere was once a very

beaudiiil princess called Elisa,

who had eleven devascatingly

handsome brothers.

Buc.as usual,theyhadaverywicked step-

mother, whoone day banished all the brothers,

and turned them into eleven wild swans.

Elisa was heartbroken, and searched high

and tow for her brothers, but in vain.

Until one day she bumped into the Fairy

Morgana, who told her where she could find

them.

"But,” warned the Fairy "to return your

brothers to their original forms, you must first

weave them eleven outfits made of sdnging

nettles.”

"Ugh,” thought Elisa. "They’ll all get

blisters.”

So she popped into her local Patons

stockist, and bought some Fairytale yaminstead.

For her eldest brother, she knitted a

classic,cablepanemed sweaterand a matching

pilch and socks.

For her second eldest brother, Elisa

fashionedanotherdassicsweater.diistimewith

handsome patterned bands in a contrasting

shade, and a pair of leggings in a stocking sdtch.

Next, Elisa knitted some leggings,

c^;ain in an easy stocking sdtch, which she

co-ordinated with a lacy cable patterned

sweater.

She had just started the fourth outfit

when die Fairy suddenly appeared.

"Gracious,” said the Fairy, impressed by

Elisa’s knitting.

"Don’t they do wonderful things with

stinging nettles these days.”

"Er, yes,” muttered Elisa. "Indeed, I

wouldn’t mind a similar outfit myself.”

"Then you shall have one,my dear,” said

the Fairy, generously.

Morgana waved her wand and lo and

behold, Elisa found herself in a beaudfiil

madn£e jacket, bonnet and bootees, each

decorated with contrasdng eyelet bands and

simple embroidered flowers.

.HUMBELINAOnce upon a time, there was an old woman

who dearly wanted a tiny baby, but she didn’t know

where to find one.

So she asked an old witch if she could help.

"Ofcourse,”said the witch."justplantthismagicseedand your

wish will come true.”

The old woman did as she was told, watered it carefully and,

much to her surprise a large flower grew and grew until one day, it

opened.

Lying inside was a riny baby, just as the witch had promised,

wearing the most exquisite layette the old woman had ever seen.

Each tiny piece was knitted in delicate lace stitching, and was

hi^ighced, here and there, by tiny embroidered flowers.

The old woman sighed with happiness.

"What a sweet child you are.And no bigger than my thumb.”

And so that’s exactly what the old woman called her...

Emperor’s famous new suit.

This, you understand, was no ordinary

suit. It was made of a spectacular new cloth

which.accordingtoits weavers.was invisible to

anyone who was foolish.

In order to look equally as stunning,

everyone had donned their best clothes,

including our six friends here.

Using the same pattern,Mrs Periwinkle

(far left) knitted a lacy panelled round-necked

cardigan for herself, and a plainer panelled

v-neckcd cardigan for her f^usband.

For her daughtCT and son, she knitted a

matchingswcaterand cardigan which featured

contrasting garter sdtch ridges and optional

embroidery around the yokes.

And, in return for a latge apple pie, she

hadmade the Baker’s sons two classic sweaters,

one with a cable panel down the middle, and the

other, an alphabet brick motif.

Thefanfares trumpeted.Oursix friends

watched one another caudously, for none

wished to appear foolish.

As the resplendent Emperor strutted

past, young master Periwinkle let out a cry of

astonishment.

"But the Emjjeror has nothing on!”

And,ofcourse, any fool could see that he

hadn’t.
