What Makes Our PATIOWhat Makes Our PATIOWhat Makes Our PATIOWhat Makes Our PATIO----Tomatoes so Special?Tomatoes so Special?Tomatoes so Special?Tomatoes so Special?
Our Patio Vegetable Breeding project aims to produce exciting
new F1 varieties, some of which have been especially bred to have
good disease tolerance. All of the varieties have been bred to be
suitable for growing in confined spaces in containers, pots and
hanging baskets.
Our breeding program differs from others in this specialist product
area, in that our new tomatoes are being especially developed for
three different market niche segments in this rapidly expanding
market.
Compact: Some of our varieties are very compact, having an
upright plant habit and short internodes. They develop many very
tasty cherry sized fruits and are aimed at specialist plant raisers
and growers for impulse pot sales to supermarkets.
Trailing: Other varieties in the range have a trailing habit and are
heavy cropping. They are aimed at the traditional plant market for
sale to the home gardener. These varieties are good for growing in
medium sized containers, growbags and hanging baskets.
Taller and semi-determinate: Some varieties the range have a
more upright but still very much determinate habit. They are good
for growing in medium sized containers, grow bags and with some
support also in a garden or open field.

compact habit and attractive rugose leaves. It is ideal for small to
medium sized pots.
We believe it is the best tasting variety in this particular niche
category. Bitonto F1 produces lots of fruit that are well spaced on
the plant, allowing for better ripening than with other dwarf
varieties. The glossy fruit are cherry sized with an average weight
of 12g, measuring 25 mm x 28 mm and with 7-8% Brix.
Plant sizes can be manipulated well with this variety. With careful
watering, it can be successfully grown in a 1.5 litre pot for
presentation as a sleeved product, well suited to impulse sales.

growing habit.
• Heavy crops of great
tasting small cherry
shaped fruits.
• Fruits are well spaced

container types including hanging baskets. It has promising yield
potential, as well as being early to ripen in a UK climate.
The abundant cocktail sized fruits of 30-40g have a good balance
of sweetness with some acidity, giving it an excellent flavour
profile which is well liked by a number of our customers for both
salad use and cooking.
