MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
NEWSLETTER VOLUME 5, ISSUE 1 WINTER 2015
Dear Colleagues:
Taking a thoughtful and retrospective look at the past twelve months
that comprise the year 2014, it is gratifying to see that the Department
of Pathology has met many challenges and accomplished a number of
goals. In the midst of this, we said goodbye to a departed and respected
faculty member, Dr. Suzanne Meleg-Smith. As we remember our loss, we
also remember our achievements in the scope of clinical services, re-
search and teaching. We welcomed three new clinical faculty members
who bring new expertise to our existing strengths. The past year also
saw the graduation of several residents and fellows. We welcomed three
new Fellows and three PGY I residents. Our residents are committed and
dedicated to their learning and services while maintaining strong leader-
ship roles in the School. Four graduate students completed their disser-
tation studies and received their Ph.D. degrees. Our research activities
are diverse and robust, as reflected by the extramural grant support and
the high quality of publications. As 2015 dawns, the Department meets
this new year already strengthened by the achievement of the preceding
year; the challenges represented by this new year are to exceed the
achievements of the previous year. Not only are we committed to main-
tain an excellent standard of clinical, research and teaching accomplish-
ments, it is our goal to surpass it. Warmest wishes for a successful
2015!!

DR. SUZANNE MELEG-SMITH
IN MEMORIAM
Dr. Suzanne Meleg-Smith was born August 18, 1939 in Budapest, Hungary. Through the
course of her most dedicated and accomplished life, she would simultaneously hold three citi-
zenships: Hungarian, British and American.
Fluent in Spanish, Dr. Meleg-Smith graduated from the Javeriana Medical School at Bogota,
Colombia in 1957. For the next fourteen years, her time in Bogota was spent pursuing her
extraordinary medical career where she achieved several career milestones. She received her
M.D. in Medicine and Surgery in 1964, completed an internship at Samariana Hospital the
same year, and spent her residency St. San Jose Hospital from 19651968. From there she
went on to work as an Instructor of Pathology at the Javieriana School of Medicine and also
worked as an Oncological Pathology Fellow at Bogotas National Cancer Institute. She served
as an Associate Specialist of Pathology at the Military Hospital and University in Bogota.
When she later moved to North America, Dr. Meleg-Smith worked as a Visiting Scientist of
Nephropathology and Immunopathology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.
There she completed her residency in Anatomic Pathology and was named Chief Resident.
During her stint at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Dr. Smith, as an Assis-
tant Professor, was named the Director of Immunopathology and EM in the Department of
Pathology.
In 1992, she joined the Pathology Faculty at Tulane. Dr. Meleg-Smith was a dedicated and
committed member of the Department for twenty-two years. She was an excellent renal pa-
thologist and devoted teacher who always exhibited complete dedication to academic medi-
cine. Dr. Meleg-Smith mentored and taught many generations of students and residents who
later became excellent pathologists and nephrologists. She was a superb Professor of Pathol-
ogy, Head of Autopsy Service and Head of Renal Pathology. Her love and dedication to her
work was clear to all with whom she both worked and taught; her drive and energy were con-
tagious. Her colleagues have described her as someone who was a complete humanist with a
deep well of love and compassion for suffering.
Dr. Meleg-Smith is joined in death with her husband, Mr. Clive Smith. Their two children,
Anike and Paul, and four grandchildren survive them
