Rose Maria DiFiore Redman, ‘85Head of School

Dear Family and Friends,

This past school year proved to be a very special one for Presentation of Mary. The welcoming of boys to the Academy was not only a milestone, but also a true step forward for our school. After years of being asked, “Will you take my son?” we welcomed 15 young men for the 2011-2012 school year. This coming September, 40 young men will walk the halls of PMA. We are growing, and could not be happier.

In the fall, we will begin our next big adventure, opening our doors to more than twenty international students who will live her on campus. In August, we will officially open Marian House to these students. What could be better than to be educated at PMA and live in the former residence of Edward F. Searles?

Please join us for a sneak peek at this new residence hall on

Come discover what continues to make PMA such a special place to learn and grow. Rest assured, no matter what changes we make, we ALWAYS remain true to our mission: PMA provides a quality education that seeks to integrate Catholic beliefs and values with academic excellence, thus empowering young men and women to assume roles of leadership and service to family, church and community.

Enjoy the rest your summer with family and friends!

Julia Splaine, ‘12 recieved a full scholarship to attend the United States Naval Academy

Recent graduate, Julia Splaine received a full scholarship to attend the United States Naval Academy (USNA) class of 2016.

Julia’s academic excellence, outstanding co-curricular activities and willingness to help others will serve her well as she enters the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. The USNA represents hard work, determination, focus and drive and their mission is to develop midshipmen (students) “morally, mentally, and physically” (www.usna.edu). Julia will continue to grow as a person, a leader and a scholar and after a rigorous four years at the USNA she will be commissioned as an officer in America’s Navy or Marine Corps.

The United States Naval Academy is extremely competitive and her acceptance is an extraordinary accomplishment. It’s reputation is so internationally strong, applicants represent every state in the nation as well from countries such as Mexico, Thailand, Bangladesh, Jordan, Korea, the Maldives and Sri Lanka. They only admit students who demonstrate leadership skills in academics, athletics and the community.

It is easy to see why they chose Julia. She is an intelligent, motivated and goal oriented student who ranked second in her class. While at PMA, Julia was involved in National Honor Society, Campus Ministry, Math Club, Student Ambassadors, piano, competitive swimming, cross country and track. She is also very involved in the local community and volunteers her time and service at Cor Unum, vacation Bible school, 4-H club, nursing homes and several youth groups.

Julia’s outstanding leadership skills and personal achievements led to a Congressional Nomination Letter sent the Naval Academy, on her behalf, written by Senator Scott Brown.

Julia decided she wanted to apply to the USNA after attending a fast paced, six-day summer seminar in Annapolis at the Naval Academy. It takes a special person to want to attend USNA. It is a rigorous and demanding program where students make a commitment to live a military life-style and are expected to work hard and push beyond their limits. Julia is an innovator who does not shy away from challenges but rather she tackles them head on. For the class of 2015 the USNA received 19,145 applications and only 4,493 were from women. 1,229 are enrolled in the current freshman class and only 236 are women. These statistics would deter most young women her age, but not Julia.

She left for the Naval Academy in June, only one month after graduation.

Julia being awarded a full scholarship to the United States Naval Academy at Graduation.

BREAKING GROUND

INTERNATIONAL BOARDING PROGRAM

PMA Introduces International Boarding Program Renovations are underway to develop housing for International PMA Students

The Sisters of the Presentation of Mary and Presentation of Mary Academy are working with United Schools Association to create housing for International Students beginning this fall,

September 2012.

Marian House, located on the shared grounds of the Academy and the Sisters, will be transformed into housing to accommodate International Students. Originally, Marian House

was Edward Searles main living quarters, and most recently, a residential building for Sisters of the Presentation of Mary. These students will live on campus and will be enrolled as

students at PMA. United Schools Association will oversee all housing matters while PMA will be responsible for all school related and academic issues.

In the past few years, the desire to live and study in the United States has risen greatly amongst other countries. United Schools Association finds quality educational opportunities for these families and has developed a model that works for both the school as well as the students. PMA will be the second school to partner with United Schools Association in

Massachusetts.

Currently a handful of International students are enrolled at PMA and the Board of Directors, Administration and Faculty are excited that these numbers are growing. A blend of cultures in one academic setting will allow students to learn from each other and appreciate the different traditions, languages, customs and beliefs of their peers. The International Boarding program is an opportunity to grow and develop for all involved and is a welcome and exciting addition to

the PMA community.

SUMMER 2012

Susan (Zappala) RoggeClass of 1980

Susan (Zappala) Rogge received a Bachelor’s degree in business administration and landed her first real job as a contracts administrator for Sanders Lockheed (Manchester, NH), negotiating defense contracts with the Navy. Sue was one of a

handful of women in that area at that time and resigned after her daughter was born. It was really the act of putting her daughter in Kindergarten at St. Michael School that helped her to find her true path and passion, At that time, Sue offered her services as a volunteer in the St. Michael’s Religious Education Office. In time, Sue began to take on additional projects, such as becoming a member of the task force overseeing the expansion of St. Michael School and the construction of a new school building. Sue eventually become a full time administrative assistant at St. Michael’s. Due to her efforts, the School has an all time high enrollment of 542 students this year. The school has expanded to include additional pre-school classes and extended day programs. Sue has played a pivotal role in expanding extra-curricular activities such as Running Club, Ski Club, Chess Club and more. As Director of the Drama Club she spends hundreds of hours of her “free time” throughout the year, preparing for amazing productions. Sue’s greatest gift, and the truest testament to her legacy, is not her professional accomplishments, but her kind heart and gentle spirit. It is no wonder that all the 7th grade girls line up for advice at lunch; that her office is full of children wanting to spend time with her after school; and it is impossible for teachers to punish others by sending them to the principal’s office, as it is shared with St. Michael’s beloved Mrs. Rogge. Sue has been married to Bill Rogge for 27 years and they have two children, Benjamin and Jessica.

Lisa describes the constant value placed on “giving to others” and making a difference by her parents, the late Honorable Nick and Joan Buglione. She credits her time at PMA for nourishing her spiritually, socially and academically, while encouraging her ideas and involvement. Lisa began teaching pre-school as she pursued her BS in Elementary Education at Salem State College. Her love for art compelled her to further pursue a K-12 Art Certification. When she earned her degree in 1985, Lisa had several teaching certificates and acquired years of teaching experience. In 1985, Lisa was hired as Director of “The Kid’s Place,” in Methuen where she developed 3 Preschool classrooms, a full-day accredited Kindergarten and, an Infant Toddler room. Simultaneously, she worked on her Graduate Thesis, wherein she organized an Inter-generational Art Program that was recognized by the Commonwealth. This experience solidified Lisa’s focus on the importance of the arts in our community.Lisa’s love of the arts resulted in her accepting a position as an Art Teacher for the Methuen Public Schools. After 20 years with MPS, Lisa takes pride in continually serving her community in more creative and inspiring ways. At MPS Lisa has established countless programs that enriched her students and extended community.Lisa is presently pursuing certification as a Fine Arts Director. She is sensing that God is preparing her for another opportunity for growth. Though uncertain of the road that lies ahead, Lisa is confident it will be another avenue to create change and inspire others.Lisa is the mother of Andre (12) and Arianna (11).

Presently, Jessica is the Director of Human Resources and the firm has grown to 58 employees in two office locations. She directly supervises 8 administrative professionals. Armen Derderian has been an integral part of PMA since his youngest daughter, Laurie-Beth, ’03, began her freshman year at PMA. He was a parent leader, becoming involved any chance he could. His role at the school deepened in 2002 when he began to serve on the PMA Advisory Board, which later evolved into the PMA Board of Directors. Armen’s vast finance and accounting knowledge coupled with his unique sense of humor has been the highlight of many long board meetings.

Armen graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell in 1975 with a Business Administration degree and the same year began his career a Certified Public Accountant. Today, he is still a self-employed CPA who has suffered through 37 hectic tax seasons. He also teaches part time accounting and computer courses at Northern Essex Community College.

where young men and women – can be themselves, where they can discover or develop what makes them special, what makes them them. For a young student, this

process of discovery is fundamental to their growth.

Sandi Bedrosian-Hyde: Class of 1979What college or university did you attend and what was your major?

I moved to Vermont with my family before I actually attended college. I was exposed to the arts, performed in local theatre, was hired as a chef at a well known resort, taught classes in calligraphy, and exhibited and sold my water color paintings in art galleries and art exhibitions. A year later, I returned to MA to attend Northern Essex Community College for two years, studying ASL and Deafness Communication as well as Business, Marketing, Commercial Art and Advertising Design. I then transferred to the University of Lowell majoring in Voice Performance and Music.

Where has your journey taken you? I own and operate a music studio in Andover, “The VOICE Studio,” where we teach voice, piano, guitar, etc. I have also been a professional vocalist for over 30 years in many different genres and at a variety of venues from Liturgical Soloist to Concert Artist to Wedding Singer. In the last 10 years I have also been working as a TV and Radio Voice Over Artist. That has been a blast! I’ve always been interested in Advertising and I guess it’s just fun to use my voice in a way that’s not musical.

How do you feel that you have personally and professionally grown from these experiences?

I have been teaching for more than half my life. Teaching keeps you humble, if you let it and, you are always learning too! It’s so rewarding to see these new budding “artists” find their voice and oftentimes go off into successful careers of their own. Performing has also been a wonderful way to share what I do and what I love with many…all in a few minutes or a single evening. It also keeps you in the running, so to speak. As a singer, you must be ready and able to perform at your best. (Well, at least 99% of the time). There is a delicate balance that musicians must find between discipline and passion.

How did your foundation at PMA influence the course of your life?I do believe that PMA in a way echoed some of the basic values that I was taught from my amazing family.

It’s a rare thing to have your High School education cushioned with the essence of “family values”. As a teacher, I believe that education must be complete, in that we must also learn to have compassion, a kind spirit and a good sense of humanity.

Diane Cormier Gatchell: Class of 1986What college or university did you attend and what was your major?I attended Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. I majored in Pharmacy with a minor in Business Management. From there I worked at Boston’s Children’s Hospital, Walgreen’s and as an instructor at Mass College of Pharmacy. I have spent the last 7 years at Greater Lawrence Family Health Center as the Director of Pharmacy. In 2005, we had one pharmacy. We have grown to 4 pharmacies and will be opening a pharmacy in September at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen.

Where has your journey taken you?I have been able to work with some of the most caring and compassionate clinicians in the area and have been given many opportunities to grow professionally.

Some of my work has included:

· Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Life Saving Patient Safety Award 2011, Executive

Leader

· Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Outstanding Executive Leader Award 2011

2007

· Greater Lawrence Family Health Center Distinguished Service Award, 2007

· Lawrence Family Medicine Residency Support Staff Excellence Award 2006-2007

How did your foundation at PMA influence the course of your life? I have learned a great deal about working with the under served and I believe that the basis of my compassion and empathy has come from my parents and from my lessons learned at PMA. I remember as a senior in high school volunteering in Lawrence with my classmates and seeing the gratitude of those we helped. I remember Sr. Rose- always there to help and to listen. Her patience and dedication showed me that we are all capable of seeing the good in others.

Glenna Mugavero: Class of 2008

What college or university did you attend and what was your major?I graduated from Merrimack College class of 2012 with a focus on Mass Communications and two minors in Spanish Language Studies and English.

Where has your journey taken you?I worked as a writing center tutor for three years and I had the opportunity to present at both a regional and national conference in Miami, FL. I worked through college. I served three years as an orientation leader and was the designated camera person for any and all school events. I received the honor of being selected by peers and professors as the first female and first Liberal Arts school student to give the First Lecture Speech at Merrimack College. This was a true highlight for me.

How do you feel that you have personally and professionally grown from these experiences?I have grown professionally as a result of my time at Merrimack. I knew at an early age what I wanted to do with my life. I found away to approach my schoolwork creatively. I turned a majority of my work into film making

projects even when it was not necessary. I put passion into all that I did and I stretched my wings to creatively explore my talents. I also developed by learning the very important skill of time management.

How did your foundation at PMA influence the course of your life?I was a bit of a jokester in high school, but college found a way for me to channel my inner-goof ball in a more professional way. PMA is the place where I found myself, Merrimack helped me to clean out and buff out the rough edges and I was still working on understanding myself as a person. PMA set the groundwork for me. When I was going into high school, I was a wreck. I had no idea of what I wanted, what kind of person I was, and if I was making the right decisions. . PMA instilled a confidence in me that I had never known. The school helped me to succeed. I am still in touch with my little group of friends at PMA. I have the same best friend I have had since sophomore year. This school is truly unlike any other school. It is the most perfect place to discover who you are and what you want to bring to the table and how to present yourself to the world.

Shanene Pierce: Class of 2011

What college or university did you attend and what was your major?

Last July, I traveled to the West African country of Ghana to participate in a volunteer-based leadership program called Global Leadership Adventures: Children of Africa. For three weeks, I lived in a close-knit community where I was able to personally interact with the families that lived around us. Along with several other high school students from around the globe, I volunteered at a local, elementary school named Rhema. Every day for three weeks we made bricks for 2 hours in the morning. We then taught various subjects in the classroom for an hour and enjoyed free time with the students afterwards. On the weekends we traveled the country and went on cultural excursions.

In addition, we were also introduced to many Non-Government Organizations, also known as NGO’s. I am

still actively involved with two of these, Father’s House International Ghana and New Seed International.

Where has your journey taken you? I attend the University of New England as a full time student and Northern Essex Community College as a part time student. I am majoring in environmental Science with a minor in Public Health. I hope to continue my studies after UNE and go to Boston University for a Masters Degree in Environmental Epidemiology.

I am very much into volunteering and the organizations that I am involved with are: The Holland Project at the MSPCA, New Seed International, Father’s House Ghana, MSPCA Foster Care Program, CAMPS Ministry.

How do you feel that you have personally and professionally grown from these experiences?

I have personally grown from my experiences. Going to Africa has opened my eyes to the importance of human

relationships and cross-cultural connections. After spending time in a developing nation, I have found a way to combine both of my interests (environmental and medical) in my career path. Spending time in Ghana changed my life and I can honestly say that I will never be the same, but in a good way. I’ve grown as a person in my own independence, morals, and values. I hope that every person gains experiences in things their lifetime that opens his/her eyes to a new world and gives them positive personal growth..

How did your foundation at PMA influence the course of your life?PMA gave me a solid platform for my faith, which I carried with me into and through college. It is one of the things that I relied on most when I was on my own and in a new and strange environment. My advice to current PMA students is to put effort in keeping up relationships with people in your life, even after you are separated in college. You never know when you may need them!

On Friday, March 16th, career morning was held at PMA. It is truly a morning that the students, faculty and staff look forward to. It presents a great opportunity for the students to broaden their horizons, open their minds, and introduce them to different careers. It is a chance for alumni to come back and visit their old stompin’ ground and share with the students their experiences since they graduated from PMA. It opens doors for public servants and local business owners to be a part of the unique experience of visiting PMA for a morning.

The topics and careers that were showcased were: Antiques Dealing and Interior design, Anti-terrorism Force Protection, Careers in Engineering, Education in Art and Psychology, Firefighting, Health Care Administration; Human Resources, Legal Careers, Local and State politics, visits from political leaders, pest control, Pharmacy, Public Accounting, Quality Engineering, Nursing, Special Education, Systems Engineering, Methuen Police Department Canine Demonstrations, Hypnosis, Operating a Canine Business, and Chiropractic Medicine.

Alumni that participated in this event were, Rachel Hickey, Meghan Therriault, Lisa Desharnais, Jodi Atkinson Berry, Michelle Epstein, Rabiah Dys, Jennifer Gaudet, Liz Kinnal, Krista Paduchowski, Laura Wante, and Anne Nichols.

The career morning came to an end with a spectacular art show and inspirational presentation by local artist Rob Surette of Amazing Hero Art. His show of portrait painting with the use of lights, music, and video presentation were absolutely AMAZING. The energy and inspiration he gave us was indescribable. Rob donated one of his beautiful pieces of a portrait of Mother Theresa to the school.

ALUMNI EVENTS

Words of Wisdom

26

On May 10th alumni gathered with the class of 2012 for the Words of Wisdom Ceremony. As they arrived a few of PMA’s fine young men opened the doors for the alumni guests (a new sight most alumni) and they were welcomed by PMA underclassmen and the sounds of classical background music provided by Jackie Choi, ‘12. The Alumni were matched up graduating seniors to present them with Words of Wisdom upon their graduation. Paula Mansor-Laliberte, ’82 welcomed the group followed by a prayer led by PMA Head of School, Rose Maria DiFiore Redman, ‘85. Dr. Jean Beninato was guest speaker who spoke about time and experiences at PMA and how they shaped her life’s journey.

One by one, alumni approached the podium, along with their graduating senior, and delivered some words of wisdom. Some shared their favorite quotes, while others gave heartfelt advice. The alumni guests received roses while the seniors were handed beaded and gold necklaces handcrafted by Carla (Boremi) Byrne, ’86, owner of Bella Beads in Andover, MA. It was a wonderful evening enjoyed by students, alumni and faculty alike.

On Saturday, June 16th, PMA’s Dupre center was hustling and bustling with “seasoned” yard sale shoppers who were on a mission. It is safe to say that

most of them found what they were looking for. Shoppers carried furniture, giftware, electronics, household items, toys, jewelry, clothes and vintage finds out of the front doors! A couple of the hidden jewels thatday were beautiful china sets with several place settings being sold by the PMA Sisters, who had over thirty tables of beautiful glassware, dishes and other items. They also had a beautiful seasonal Christmas Shoppe.

It was wonderful to see so many PMA Alumni who participated by shopping, renting a table, or volunteering. The proceeds from the table rentals and the concession stand go directly towards scholarships for PMA students. The remainder of the items that did not sell were donated by the vendors to Lazarus House Thrift Shop.
