WELCOMEDear Colleagues,

we appreciate to invite you for a second time to attend a histological slide seminar given bythe European Working Group for Breast Screening Pathology (EWGBSP) in Neubrandenburg,Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

What about the EWGBSP?This group of pathologists from several European countries was founded by the late ProfessorJohn Sloane from Liverpool in 1993 aiming more standardised pathological diagnostics of breastlesions in Europe. During the following years the group was involved in the production of the3rd and 4th edition of the European guidelines for quality assurance in breast cancer screeningand diagnosis supported by the EU commission. Today the group has 38 members from almostall European countries and is chaired by Dr. Clive Wells from London. One of the most importanttasks of the EWGBSP is further development of the European guidelines for quality assurancein breast cancer screening and diagnosis. In 2013 the group published the Pathology updatefor the Supplements to the fourth edition of the EU guidelines. These Supplements take intoaccount recent developments and will improve quality assurance before the publication of thenext edition. In addition, the EWGBSP closely cooperates with the European Society of BreastSpecialists (Eusoma). For example the EWGBSP helped to define certification criteria for breastunits in Europe or the requirements for dedicated breast pathologists.

What kind of slide seminar will happen in Neubrandenburg? After a regular business meeting of the EWGBSP held at Dietrich Bonhoeffer Medical CenterNeubrandenburg the day before members of the group like to give whole day slide seminaron breast pathology. Using cases from daily practice the presenters will discuss typicalproblems in differential diagnosis but even so they will include recent conceptional diagnosticapproaches and new developments in classifications of breast lesions. The histological slides of all cases will be digitalized and you as attendees will have theopportunity to read them web-based as virtual slides before the seminar. We will collect yourdiagnoses in advance and they will be integrated in the discussion of every case by thepresenting specialist. We are grateful that Professor Vincenzo Eusebi and Professor Werner Böcker will moderate theinteraction between attendees and presenters. Moreover, they will try to summarize the resultsof the discussion. We will produce a handout with clinical data, figures, and diagnostic criteriaof all cases which will be available for all attending colleagues on site, even electronically.

We are looking forward to see you in Neubrandenburg and hope for fruitful discussions andnew contacts!
