friendship and that we will continue to sup-
port their craft needs in the future.
I was pleased that the September meeting
was so productive. I hope you remember the
new faces and continue to support the dif-
ferent activities in the future. We have so
very much talent in our guild; it makes me
proud to be working for you. This month is
the ― Do Not Touch the Quilts‖ challenge and
I am excited to see all of your creative
ideas. I think this is going to be a lot of fun.
Having many hands to do the jobs makes
them so much easier!. Volunteer for any one
of the many quilt show positions to help out
in any way you are able. Lots of things can be
done by just sitting and enjoying the people
that stop by. The Quilt Show is only one ex-
ample: there are many more committees to
join, and the more that join the less each one
has to do. Think about it.
This should be a good meeting.
Hope to see you there…….Elaine
Hello Friends,
Here we are in October already
and our first meeting at our
new location, PhilHaven, and I thought that
my second year would get easier. I have
joked many times about getting a room there
along with some of my friends and guess
what, here we are! This is a big change after
20 years of our meetings being held at Corn-
wall Manor and hopefully we will adjust with
only minor changes. The parking situation is
number one on my list of improvements and I
hope you will approve also. I would like to
make a request of the members. First, there
is a parking lot when you enter to the left
and that is by the back (kitchen) entrance.
Could we please use this lot for the members
that have problems in walking and for the
speakers to park in. As you pass the building
there is a larger lot on the left with lots of
space for the rest of us to park in. The path
from there leads to the front door.
My wish is that we can leave Cornwall Manor
with happy thoughts of a long and prosperous

As of the October, 2013 guild meeting on
Monday, October 7th, 7pm, we will be meeting at:

answered by Patty and the guild decided to move our
meetings to Phil Haven starting with with the Octo-
ber meeting. A letter will be sent to Cornwall
Manor thanking them for having our meetings there
for the last 20 years and to tell representatives of
Cornwall Manor that Cornwall Manor residents will

MONEYWISE by Faye Adams
I love this time of year. Fall has arrived and our Guild is starting to get very busy. Will we have
enough money to do everything we want? I‘m sure we do as we have over Ten Thousand dollars in the
bank to start. Of course, we won‘t spend it all.
Most of our money comes from your dues. Every year we project what we expect to collect in dues and each
year we exceed our expectations. Will this trend continue? Will our move to Philhaven have an effect on our
membership? Only time will tell but I predict we will continue to increase our membership again this year.
Our next biggest moneymaker is our raffle basket. Myrna Todd and Anne Annibali are taking care of the
basket this year and I know they will do a great job. We expect to sell 100 tickets at each monthly meeting but
I would not be surprised if we exceed these expectations. It‘s all up to you.
Our raffle quilt can‘t go on sale until we get our 501(c)3 approval. I had hoped we would have this by now but
we don‘t so we need to be a little more patient. I will let everyone know when we finally hear from the IRS.
And how do we spend our money? Our largest expense is for the speakers we have at our meetings. This year
we have budgeted almost Two Thousand dollars for speaker fees and an additional Fifteen Hundred dollars in
Travel Expenses. Check out our brochure for the program details.
Our next largest expense is for our Community Service Project with a budget of $1,250. Most of this will go
into the Fallen PA State Troopers project. Have you seen the blocks already completed? They are fascinating.
If you want to know how the rest of our money comes and goes, keep your eye on the Treasurer‘s report every
month in this newsletter. If you have any questions or comments, I hope you let me know.
Contact me at [email protected]
First of all, I‘d like to thank those who have offered their support for the Community Service
Projects for this coming year. As we all know, it takes all members of the Guild to make it a suc-
cessful year. We have members with an over-abundant stash who are willing to make pillow cases for Hershey,
Quilts for DVI or help work on the State Trooper Project. Since our Board gave us a generous budget to work
with, we will have many kits that can be taken home and completed. The various projects are coming along
smoothly with donations of fabric kits from QuiltMakers Cottage for pillow cases for the Med Center.
Jeannette will also have pillowcase kits available at the meetings and looks forward to collecting the finished
pillow cases. The blocks for the PA State Police Quilts are getting completed with 4 more workshop days set up
at the Community Center at Phil Haven for Saturday and Sunday, October 19, 20 and 26, 27, 2013. Mark your
calendar. I will have a sign-up sheet at the October meeting for members to sign up for a day or just a few
hours to work under Christenna Stamm‘s guidance as we help make these amazing blocks from the used State
Police uniforms. No fabric from members is required as the blocks are made completely from parts of the offi-
cers uniforms.
I‘d like to thank Susan Commisso on a job well done for her five years as Community Service Chairperson.
Kathy
I have stitched, formed friendships, laughed, shared secrets, eased burdens and learnt lessons. For this I can be grateful. This is the journey of a quilter. This is what my quilt guild is to me. anonymous
Getting to Know:

PillowTalk by Jeanette Henning
September 12th, 2012 was a day that I will never forget. That was the day that I was told that my
beautiful, precious two and a half year old granddaughter was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia,
long descriptive words for cancer. I don‘t know about you, but that word has always had the ability to stop my
breathing, for at least a moment or two. Seeing Sienna in her hospital bed hooked up to the different ma-
chines was a bit overwhelming for this maw maw‘s heart. But one of the first things that I did notice (when
my brain starting working again), was that she had a very bright and cheerful pillowcase on her bed. The
nurses said that the pillowcases were donated by an organization called Conkerr Cancer, and I thought that
was great. The pillowcase really did make her hospital bed more cheery.
I am sharing some pictures of Sienna with some of her pillowcases that she has gotten so far, along her year
long journey, so that you could witness for yourselves how a bright, cheery, happy pillowcase makes a hospital
bed so much brighter. In the first picture Sienna was newly admitted. Number two picture shows Sienna
with her ―chemo duck‖; when this picture was taken she was on a round of steroids. Picture three was a week
before Christmas and Sienna is at the clinic for one of her chemo treatments. Picture four was taken on her
3rd birthday, (yes, she got a chemo treatment on her birthday, cancer doesn‘t take a day off), and last but not
least, pictures five and six show Sienna with a couple of her pillowcases. She is in her maintenance phase
right now and I look forward to the day that the doctors say, ―Cured‖.
Thanks to all of you who continue to show your support for the pillowcase project, and remember, together we
can put smiles on the faces of children, one pillowcase at a time……

Happy October‖ to everyone. I can‘t believe that we have started a new year!
As we have new members already I would like to review (and will review periodically) what our guidelines are
for sending cards, thank you notes, flowers or donations made to/for our guild members. The guidelines are
as follows:
1. Notes and cards are sent to guild member such as get well, thinking-of-you, congratulations, etc.
2. Thank you notes are sent to all guest speakers.
3. Donations or flowers are sent following the passing of a guild Member, or any direct relative, the
spouse, child, parent, or sibling of a guild member. Other family members and relatives will receive cards.
During the month of August 2013, we have sent the following:
1. Sympathy cards to Amy Wissinger and Kitty Zackey for the passing of their brother-in-law.
2. Four thinking of you cards to guild members.
Please feel free to contact me via email: [email protected],

savings while you support the Guild.
October Ways & Means by Myrna Todd
As all of you know, our guild is moving to a new location as of October. This also involves moving our
guild library. I will be storing our books in a secure location (my basement) and will have the library up and
running as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.

Sandy was born in Ohio but now resides in Mercer, Pa with her husband Frank. Being second
marriages, they both dreamed of sharing life and a business with someone and it happened!
They work and live together 24/7 and really enjoy what they have created in love and in busi-
ness. The shop is 18 years young though they are aging. ―We have no idea of quitting as we so
enjoy our customers and the ladies we work with. As long as our health hold out, we look for-
ward to each day and the adventure it gives and sometimes the challenges it provides‖.
Sandy dreamed of being a ‗letterer‘ at nine seeing hand lettering in an IDEALS magazine at her Grandma‘s.
Whimsical as it sounds, it happened with a lot of practicing and schooling. Being a professional calligrapher
and watercolor artist for 35 active years doing art shows and teaching, her focus has now changed to fabric
art. She made quilted jackets and vests for ladies first with 5 bolts of fabrics then transitioned to
traditional quilts, and now with over 5000 bolts of fabric in her store, she has really broadened what she likes
to do with fabric. She loves challenges from guilds as she tries to take a traditional idea (like a nine-patch) to
an art nine-patch. During the show years, custom framing her and her husband‘s work (scenic photographer)
plus a full time framing business really trained Sandy in color and how colors work together. It was a match
that now enables her to help quilters in the color decisions of quilts.
Graduate: University of Dayton – Studio Art in Calligraphy and painting
Partial Masters: Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT): Master Calligraphy Class
Selected by Hermann Zapf, of Germany, as one of 16 Americans tostudy under him two summers
Zapf is a master calligrapher and type designer of the 20th century.
Sandy has a daughter and a son. Frank has two daughters and they have 7 grandchildren.
Lecturing and sharing ideas is one of the favorite things Sandy enjoys. Being very shy growing up, it still
amazes her that now she can get up in front of groups of any size and be relaxed and speak. Finding time to
create is a challenge as it is with many quilters. Running the shop, teaching, lecturing, yard work, you know the
story too. When a quilt gets at least to the quilted stage, it is a happy dance! (many do not get bound right
away as she is on to the next two)!!!
―To create a project from someone else‘s pattern or from a design of my own that excites another quilter is
so much fun. To teach a technique or idea and see the light in someone‘s eyes sparkle with that new ability
being theirs is so gratifying.‖ Quilters are such a sharing group…….I love being part of it.
Thank you for allowing me to share with your guild.

OK – I hardly believe this: someone sent a video into Bonnie Hunter‘s blog; she quilts with a hand crank ma-
chine while driving the family tractor down on the farm. Hardly seems possible but the video proves it true.

Pillowcases:
For those of you that contribute to the Pillowcase Project:
You know we‘ve been asked to please put the cases we make into gallon zip-lock bags to keep them clean for
the children…well on a recent foray to BIG LOTS in Cleona (in the Giant Shopping Center): they have way
over in the left front corner of the store:
HEFTY BASIC gallon bags – 40 for $2.30. that‘s about 6 cents/bag.
I never heard of HEFTY BASIC before but seems like they‘ll do the job just fine and for cheap!!
This note is from JoAnn Baker re: Fall Retreat:
If you are planning to go to the Fall retreat, PLEASE bring your balance due money ($130 total)
to the October 7th meeting. The retreat is almost full, with only one or two openings left.
Anyone interested in going should call me at 610 - 589-2783. Thanks.
From Patty Frazier: THE NOVEMBER WORKSHOP on Tuesday, November 5th is CANCELLED.
Not enough members signed up :+(
And, it turned out the meeting room at Philhaven was already pre-booked with another group.
From Rosemary: If you have a key to the ‗closet of death‘ or the library, can you please return those keys
to me at the October meeting. The library case was sold and we no longer have need for keys
to any closet at the Manor. Thanks so much.
Quilt Show Rumor:
While teaching a recent class at IN STITCHES, Pauline Charles found out that some folks seem to think the
Guild Quilt Show is cancelled. This may have come from the Fall Craft Show in October at the same location
that was cancelled but please know this:
OUR QUILT SHOW NOVEMBER 22, 23 and 24th IS NOT CANCELLED.
