December 2, 1998 Here is Part I of a compilation of all of the Metheny / PMG transcriptions in typewritten form that I have been able to accumulate. Sources include the Internet, postings to the PMG mailing list, and music that people were nice enough to send me directly. Everyone who wrote these out has given me permission to allow them to be distributed - either by direct communication or de facto by having posted them to a public access. I can’t guarantee that e-mail addresses haven’t changed, but names presumably have not. If the tabs don’t line up properly, remember to change to a font that spaces all characters equally (10 pt Courier works). From: Padua PIRES <[email protected]>Subject: TAB: Third Wind Break (Pat Metheny)

Hello People

This Tab contains the unbelievable Metheny's flight over the first break in "Third Wind" ("Still Life - Talking" album), as I was able to figure out.

Time is 4/4. Begin with a quaver silence. All tabbed notes are semiquavers. A " ^ " means hammering or pulling down, and a " / " means sliding up.

If your ears say there is something wrong, please let me know.

PAT METHENY: TRAVELS ( from the album "Travels" ) ===================== from A. Derossi ( e-mail: [email protected] )

The notation is:

^ = legato ( hammer on, pull off) / = slide up \ = slide down ' = acciaccatura ( very fast note ) x = muted string

The time is 4/4. I tried to give an indicative time subdivision with the numbers 1 2 3 4 over the tabs. I hope it helps. I also wrote indicative chords.

I am sending you the chords of Better Days Ahead which I transcribed afterbusting my butt a dozen weeks. The chords I have are mainly Lyle's piano voicings, so the names may not be right but they definitely sound right. If you play guitar, you don't have to worry about playing the chords, just improvising over them(now ain't that easy?). By god, what scales can I use over those chords?!?!?!

OK here goes:

F#9sus Bm7 / Gmaj7/A Gmaj7 /E / Dmaj7 G#7(b5) / Gmaj7 /Em7 F#m7 / Bm7 / Am7 D6 / Abm7 Db7(b9) / F#6 /Fm7(b5) Bb7(b9) / Ebm7 Ab9 / Abm7 Db7(b9) / F# C9(#11)/Bmaj7 Bbm7 / Ebm7 Ebm7/Db / Cm7(b5) / Bmaj7(#11) /F# F#m / F#add9 F#(b9) / F# F#m / F#add9 F#(b9) /Ebm7 Abm7 / Fm7(b5)/Eb Ddim7 / Gmaj13(#11)

Repeat this endlessly until the last time, where it goes:...Fm7(b5)/Eb Ddim7/ Bbm7 Eb7 / Bm7 E7 / Ebm7 Abm7Fm7(b5)/Eb Ddim7/ Gmaj13(#11)

Page 12: Pat Metheny Transcriptions

Let me just make a small comment on the song. It's amazing as a dull song recorded in the studio (Letter from Home) can catch new life from a live recording (More Travels). The difference is astonishing!

Here goes my first draft of the chords of this song. I worked mostly with Mays voicings on his solo. But I know there are some of them that don't sound quite right... Could you help sorting out what chords are wrong? And suggest replacements?

To the guitarists on the mailing list:

If you haven't played the transcription to Message To A Friend (from the albumwith Scofield and more recently on Beyond The Missouri Sky) that was includedin the most recent issue of Acoustic Guitar, try to find it. The chord spellings are not intuitive (at least they weren't to me), and the transcription sounds accurate to me. Those last five chords bring tears to my eyes. With apologies to those offended by tablature, here are those last five chords (since I can't put them on-line in musical notation. In case my notation is unclear, I wrote the chords out with the first string on top, i.e. the first chord, from bottom to top, is spelled: open A, C, D, G, B without playing the 6th string.

1st string: 7 5 3 2 32nd string: 8 7 1 2 23rd string: 7 7 0 3 44th string: 10 X X 0 X5th string: 0 X 2 X X6th string: X 6 X X 3

>From [email protected] Mon Nov 11, 1996To: [email protected]: SUNLIGHT

Rick,

This is what I came up with. In transcribing, my approach is to usually get the treble or melody note and then get the bass note. Once I get that, I listen for chord quality and then just kind of "fill in the blanks". At least this approach works for me as usually root motion is pretty logical and that helps define the chord.

Just a lurker with a historical attachment to Metheny's music (not quite to the level of fan, as in fanatic). Always found attempting to play melodies with harmonics (not using the right hand) confusing on guitar (beyond simple Close to the Edge bars), since the linear intuition of the fretboard is absent. When I've done this I have to rely on pure memory, which isn't so good. At any rate, I was curious to see if the simple phrase in Follow Me was from a traditional tuning or what. I know this can be figured out by any two-bit guitar player, but this might save someone a few minutes time. FWIW (and with no attempt to reflect timing):
