    It is rare to have tha chance to restore a great XX century house working four-handed with the original designer.Published in countless architecture magazines and books on seaside architecture, the villa sits on a plot of land blessed by God on the Sardinian shore, with a view embracing a pristine landscape of mediterranean shrubs and turqouise waters. It was built at the end of the seventies in an idiom of honest materials left exposed to the aggressive marine environment. We faced the challenge to adapt it to the needs of a new owner and update it technologically, without loosing its harsh, rugged beauty. New electrical and mechanical systems had to be integrated without being obtrusive.

    The external iroko cladding was the component which most had suffered after thirty years under the sun, as well as part of the green roof. Both had to be remade. Inside, the original coconut fi ber fl ooring was substituted with locally sourced cork. Bold colours were intoduced in the originally earth toned painting of the bedrooms concrete walls.The house was stripped to the bone and renewed in a record six months.

    The villas are part of a masterplan conceived by Ferdinando Fagnola in the seventies, de ned by semi-underground volumes in exposed concrete: geological objects attacked by green and natural elements. These units were not built as intended: they were domesticated and forced into an imagery of granite coverings and pastel colors, as in most coastal architecture of the tourist boom. We did restore the radical force of the original concept, while introducing a new organization and spatial ow, and custom designed interiors.The renovation of the surrounding private park targeted the drastic cut of water consumption for maintenance. The landscape design reduced turf grass, in favour of maintenance-free mediterranean scrub. The remaining turf, including the green roofs, has been planted with a last generation bermuda grass hybrid, extremely resistant in hot and dry weather conditions. As a consequence, a reduction of 70% in water consumption is expected. The garden is integrated by a new 25x4m pool, outdoor dining and conversation areas nestled in the trees, a children playground.

    The composition of the single units revolves around a central small piazza and its olive tree. The only curved element among the hard edged volumes, a concrete wall supporting the villa on the highest spot, was painted in a bright hue of pink.

    All the interiors were custom designed up to the selection of textiles. Each unit is distinguished with a specifi c range of materials: cork fl oors, made to measure furniture in birch plywood and coloured mosaic bathrooms for the childrens more informal rooms; cotton carpets, iroko wood furniture and golden stone bathrooms for the more elegant suites.

    The beachfront property sits on an island were no running water nor electricity is available. The design is conceived to exploit the natural forces: the volume of the house is fragmented in several pavilions in order to allow the prevailing winds to freely cross the rooms, lightly screened by a permeable cladding of mangrove sticks. Seawater will be treated through a desalination system and ef ciently converted into fresh water for domestic use, while electricity will be solar powered. Locally sourced, renewable mangrove wood is used as the main framing material, while iroko planks salvaged from an existing building bound for demolition will be used for ooring and outdoor decking.

    The program includes 5 bedrooms with en suite bathroom; a gym/yoga area; several spaces for conversation, relax, dining and lounging; a service buidling with kitchen, laundry, storage and workshop; sleeping quarters for servants. The restauration of an existing colonial building is also part of the brief. The emphasis is on open air living in close contact with the nature. The public, convivial areas are all outdoor, organized in a system of terraces shaded by trees and lightweight canopies. This kind of Tarzan lifestyle is enhanced by the articulation of served and servant spaces in separate volumes connected by wooden bridges:the banal act of going to the toilet thus becomes an experience in itself when you exit your beedroom, cross the walkway suspended among tree branches and enter the bathroom...

    HOUSES ON THE GOLF COURSE

    The intervention requalifi ed a mid sixties condo which was the fi rst lot developed around the Garlenda Golf Club. The modern style of the condo is a world apart from the ligurian/provencal style which was later adopted in the developement of the resort eventually identifying with the place itself.The Piano Casa law allowed to extend some units, partially occupying roof terraces and porches.The new volumes are steel framed and clad with steel ribbon windows and adjustable aluminum louvres. The fl at roofs protruding toward south are made out of sandwich panels typically used to cover industrial buildings. The height of the ribbon deck allowed to cover the whole area in a single span. In order to obtain the best compromise between comfort and operational economy the heating system combines linear air diffusers in the living quarters and radiators in the bedrooms. This allows to quickly warm the house in the random winter week-end visit.Interiors are of nautical concept, aiming at the maximum exploitation of the living area. Rooms are separated by wall cabinets and white or mirror sliding panels. The palette of materials is restrained: oak hardwood fl oors; white formica for kitchen and bathroom cabinets; basalt stone for countertops, fi replace, window sills and outdoor fl oors. The sofas, custom made in marine plywood, have bases organized in drawers and lockers and can double as night beds.

    The typical unit can welcome up to 8 guest in three rooms, two bathrooms and an open living room/kitchen totally open toward the terrace and the surrounding landscape, extending the perception of space well beyond the 70 m2 of the interior.

    2 HOUSES ON THE BOARDWALK

    A 120 sqm fl at facing the sea in one of Italys most wanted (and thus expensive) waterfront, Alassio, west Ligury.The brief was to split it in two for holiday use by a brother, living alone, and his sister, who have a family of three. And, of course, to completely make over the run down interiors.Our choice was for natural materials: wood, stone, and glass.Its an house facing the beach, so our idea was to provide fl oors where it could be nice to walk barefoot. Thats why we selected teak treated with oil with a slate baseboard. Local split slate was also used for bathroom fl oors and showers.We wanted a light fi lled interior were to breathe the sea scent. Thats why we made generous use of pale water blue stained glazed surfaces for the kitchen units and cabinets. In order to better exploit the space they were custom designed, as most of the furniture (but the white Eames DSW chairs).

    HOUSING COMPLEX IN THE BAHAMAS

    The study was developed for a wood construction company using a standardized system.

    4 key points

    - Modular design and dry assemblage of prefabricated components guarantees speed of construction while allowing customization of the single units in a coherent whole. - Materials and typology are in tune with the tradition of colonial houses, but with an higher technological standard and comfort.- Indoor-outdoor integration: living areas will fl ow into garden and terraces extending the house beyond its physical boundaries. - Low environmental impact: houses will exploit sun, wind and minimize fresh water consumption.

    CREAM HOUSE

    PAT. has applied concepts developed through a straw of award winning competition entries to the refurbishment, fi tting and furnishing of a 300 m2 fl at in a XVII sec. listed building in Piacenza.The historical shell of the building -its walls and painted vaulted roofs- have been restored, and a new continuous resilient fl oor unifi es the space defi ned by a neutral cream tone. The new functional elements are defi ned by a striking contrast in the use of materials, which underlines the stratifi cation of interventions allowing to intuitively discern the old from the new. Where needed, we introduced new mezzanines in exposed steel beams and metal decks without altering the readability of the original spaces, while other servant spaces -as the leather clad bathrooms- are contained in pods and treated as pieces of furniture rather than new rooms.

    A big apartment in a historical building has been adapted to be occupied by a single man and his collection of bicycles, surf boards, old computers and miscellaneous memorabilia.A big island kitchen is placed in the middle of the living room. It was custom designed fi tting a found marble washbasin on the base of a Boffi kitchen.The wide dressing room is fi tted to great effect with an economic system of steel cables, rough OSB planks and stone counterweights, reminiscent of the passion of the client for alpine and nautical sports.

  • PAT. is going to marry its greatest passions in a new ambitious project hitting the ground in the legendary Laurel Canyon neighbour on Los Angeles Hollywood Hills.A steep slice of rock on the top of Grandview drive, tucked in the middle between the spots where novelist Raymond Chandler and British bluesman John Mayall used to live, will be the unlikely fertile ground for a green home of the new generation.PAT., whose love for hardboiled literature and blues music is matched only by the passion for light and airy sustainable buildings, is designing a new uncompromising house for the hillside site, who sits on top of the hill which faces West Hollywoods Sunset Strip.Flanked by local engineer Dimitri Vergun, who was responsible for the audacious structures of many celebrated LA homes from the likes of Pierre Koenig, Coop Himmelblau and Ed Niles, PAT. will cantilever from the rock a steel framed box.Floating above the canyon as a dirigible, the house will offer an immersion in the natural elements just a few minutes away from the excitement of the Sunset Strip.Capitalizing on PAT.s trademark no-nonsense, modular, integrated approach to building design, the house will target LEED gold certi cation.The energy strategy will exploit the warm California sun and the site-speci c Canyon breeze to ef ciently control the home microclimate. A selective building envelope will optimize solar gain according to the different hours and season of the years. The silvery skin will change as a chameleon to adapt to the varying conditions, providing comfort and the exhilarating experience of ever changing light and balmy air.Expected to be completed in the spring of 2012, the house will welcome visitors in the classic Case Study fashion: fully furnished. Instead of featuring the canonical mid century modern pieces, PAT. will pay homage to its own country showcasing the best in modern and contemporary Italian furniture design.Upon completion, the home will open the doors to a summer of artists in residence.A tribute to Laurel Canyon lineage in the development of the arts, the house will host a series of time and site speci c events and exhibitions.

  • Boasting the highest per capita income in Piedmont, Pino Torinese is nicknamed the Beverly Hills of Turins hills. It is a small village surronded by villas and housing compunds scattered in the green. Here we worked on a poor quality, mid century modern villa, nested in lush vegetation on the border of a park. The garden is steep and almost unusable for the open-air living which such a setting would suggest.Being forced to get rid of the existing 2 slopes asbestos cement roof, we suggested to trade it for a fl at one. A new steel frame bears a roof garden complete with pool, solarium, open air kitchen and shaded lunch area, which quickly became the heart of the project-and today of the life of the house.

    Beppe Riboli is a well known discotheque and club designer. When he was appointed the commission to design a new hotel close to the Malpensa Airport, a strong approach to sustainabilty was required in order to receive premium volumetry from the city of Busto Arsizio. Along with Turins Polythecnic professor Mario Grosso, PAT. was part of the team who provided all the backing to devise an articulate environamental strategy, exploiting a vast array of renewable sources.

    Giardini Naxos [I]2010

    NAXOS BEACH RESORT FACADES + HALL

    The Naxos Beach Resort is a huge seaside hotel complex in Sicily, boasting views of Mount Etna.Ata Hotels wanted to revamp the property, redesiging the hall, adding a rooftop deck and mitigating the impact of the brutalist facades, whose ugliness -increased by the disorder of random AC units- was at odds with the beauty of the surroundings. Working for sister company Buonomo Veglia, who was in charge of a big renewal plan also including a 790 seat auditorium, PAT. developed a study for a new, 5 stories high glazed hall and a facade system.A fi ligree of horizontal wooden sticks is superimposed to the existing concrete frame. Besides dramatically improving the overall facade image, it works as brise soleil and as a trelly were vegetation can grow.The scheme was eventually discontinued due to budget cuts.

    The brief required a residence for senior citizens, including 30 unitis averaging 60 sqm and spaces (both indoor and outdoor) for collective activities fostering the interaction and social life of the guests.

    MURENA FARMHOUSE+B&B

    Two young families have left the city to live in a farm whose original core dates back to the 600.We did preserve the spirit of the original construction which expanded over the centuries, addition after addition.We re-used the granary, where a two fl oor house found place, and substituted the volume of an old barn with a new timber framed addition clad with pine planks. It encloses two new rooms, now serving a bed&breakfast business. The ground fl oor was rearranged as a restaurant. Although we envisioned a relaxing, white toned interior, we enjoyed seeing our scheme overturned by the fl amboyance of one of the owner, a graduate from the Albertina Academy of fi ne Arts, who made wide display of his talents on the boldly decorated walls.

    This soon to be completed job is the conversion of an XIX century farm into a house + bed and breakfast activity.In order to respoind to new strict seismic regulations, the old wooden frame of the roof was substituted with a steel frame.

    An exercise in existenzminimum and fl exibility for a pair of brothers sharing a 45 m2 duplex in an historical building below the Mole Antonelliana.A huge sliding panel is the pivot point of the composition. It conceal a custom design kitchen which contains the new stair leading to the bedroom.

  • The design integrates built in furniture in theplanning, minimizing the need for free standing pieces.A smart use is made of disturbing given elements: the top of the elevator cage, which was protruding into the room, is now the base of a king size bed.Kitchen and living room are separated by asliding wall designed on purpose.Neutral colour materials has been chosen with an eye to easy maintenance (concrete, steel, white plexiglass, wood).

    The inspiration for the small optical store named Ottica Gallery began with the site: a retail space within the Piazza Castello, one of Turins major historic arcades. The design rms rst strategy was to brighten the storefront with bursts of colour to highlight the eyewear. They settled on using red, blue and green polyurethane boxes as pedestals, a detail that was inspired by the brightly hued sculptures of American minimalist artist John McCracken.

    Inside, the shop is illuminated with tracklighting installed on the barrel-vaulted ceiling. There are only a few pieces of furniture within the space, including custom tables and drawers in black-lacquered MDF with glass display tops, and wood-panel desks that complement the hardwood ooring.

    PAT Design kept most of original interior features, but brought things up-to-date by adding a few key contemporary elements, most notably, prestine white metal shelving that hang along one wall. Backlit, these punctured surfaces cast delicately stippled shadows that echo the grid-like pattern of the brick ceiling. Bright orange occasional chairs add a dash of colour, another ode to McCracken.

    PIERA GIACOBINO PERFUME SHOP

    The restyling of a well established perfume shop in the city center revolutioned the way customers move inside the tiny space, allowing them to freely look at the products in display without the mediation of a clerk behind a counter.The old storefront was redesigned and subdivided in a series of long, illuminated rectangular bays which creates a perfect background to showcase the precious little objects on sale.

    The design integrates structure, technologies and communication.Every element has both aesthetical and functional reasons.We wanted to create a brand experience on multiple layers, from the explicit to the subtle, in order to touch a deep emotional sphere.The pavilion character is dictated by the wooden structure, composed by a series of angle brackets which defi ne both the roof and the background wall for the bar, creating a warm, cozy environment set apart from the airport frenzy. While spotlights of different intensity are concealed between the roof beams, pierced plexiglass sheets between the wooden posts create a rack for the beer bottles. The rack, not unlike those familiare in sophisticated wine bars, plays different roles: on an emotional standpoint it equates the beer to quality wine, on the functional level it conceal the back of the bar from passers-by and works as storage for a corner bar which has no backoffi ce. The other three side of the pavilion are transparent, only partially screened by bottle green glass sheets which support the roof,as in a castle of cards.The minimal design and scenic lighting delivers a contemporary, art gallery look which glorify the quality of the product, while the use of natural materials reinforce the perception of the unique charcter of the brand.

    A beer venue in which you can see the world? Or a conceptual installation where you can enjoy a Pilsner?PAT. and Bellissmo made the two into one. With a bar conceived as an extra check-in at Venice airport, the italian doorway to Eastern Europe. To travelers the installation offered a boarding pass to the world of the most classic of all beers (and the best according to experts). At the core, Bohemia and its iconic brand: Pilsner Urquell, winner of countless awards, and fi rst Pils in the world.Carefully dodging romantic stereotypes, we brought back Czech atmospheres and geographic setting with photographs, documents, old industrial and texile patterns. We designed a wooden structure: a beer garden wrapped around its own inviting and cosy heart. We knew a simple taste of the quality of this Pilsner would speack louder than words. We just wanted to give it the staging it deserves.

    Lidea di museo come luogo di accoglienza oltre che di esposizione, quindi luogo aperto alle pi diverse fasce di pubblico, componente attiva della socialit cittadina, distante dallo stereotipo di museo come luogo elitario e immobile che la museologia del passato ci ha consegnato, chiama in causa fattori pi complessi rispetto alla valorizzazione delle collezioni comunali darte nonch di Palazzo Pretorio.Attivit relative a mostre temporanee o eventi anche non direttamente correlati al museo quali la presentazione di un libro, dellopera di un artista, le riunioni dei circoli cittadini, gli eventi privati, le conferenze e i convegni, ma anche la normale fruizione dei cittadini, necessitano di spazi e servizi fl essibili, collegati da percorsi semplici ed effi cienti, attualmente assenti o sottodimensionati e incompatibili con la confi gurazione distributiva attuale di Palazzo Pretorio.Le opere in esposizione nel Museo civico non necessitano di particolari artifi ci allestitivi: dalle monumentali pale daltare, ai dipinti su tavola, alla popolazione di sculture del salone allultimo piano si origina una naturale, irriproducibile suggestione.

    Tutte le opere, di qualsiasi epoca, dimensione, materia e peso, non sono n fi ssate n appoggiate alle pareti esistenti, sia per evitare punti di fi ssaggio sulla muratura, probabilmente inaffi dabile, sia per evitare il contatto diretto delle opere con superfi ci non isolate termicamente. Seguendo lordinamento indicato si creato un percorso ricco di fughe prospettiche e di simmetrie, centralmente alle quali si ono collocate le opere ritenute maggiori o maggiormente suggestive.La grande sala del terzo piano sar il culmine del percorso ascensionale che attraversa le varie fasi cronologiche della vita culturale della citt e, grazie agli scorci sempre pi ampi sul paesaggio, ne svela il panorama. Sar quindi lideale trampolino, fi sico e metaforico, da cui la citt si protender verso lesterno per guardare verso orizzonti lontani.

  • 3A questo fi ne, la disponibilit allinterno della collezione civica di un nucleo di opere di Jacques Lipchitz sar unopportunit unica di collegamento con la cultura internazionale del 900. Le pareti bianche e labbondante luce naturale sono ideali per valorizzare le sculture e evocare limpressione di trovarsi nello studio di un artista. Il centro della piattaforma sopraelevata occupata dalle grandi opere di Bartolini. La rampa centrale prepara il visitatore alla visita del nucleo Lipchitz attraverso una serie di fotografi e evocative della statura dellartista e del suo legame con la Toscana. Nella parte inferiore della sala la visione delle sculture integrata da un box al cui interno i disegni preparatori delle opere sono esposti in una vetrina lineare, una sorta di acquario in cui i disegni galleggiano. Elemento dominante della parete sud-ovest che fa da fondale alla sala la ricostruzione della grande cancellata scultorea che d accesso alla Roofl ess Church di Philip Johnson. Sulla base del disegno della cancellata tracciato sulla parete sono collocati i gessi preparatori presenti nella collezione del Civico.

    Percorsa allinverso la rampa, il visitatore esce attraversando la cella che ospita il nucleo pittorico dedicato allottocento e novecento pratese.Nella scelta dei materiali per gli interventi di allestimento si mira ad un approccio che consenta di leggere distintamente gli interventi contemporanei che si stratifi cano sul tessuto storico del palazzo, creando una presenza senza tempo, elegante e discreta, semplice e rarefatta, basata su toni neutri e materiali grezzi.Sono neri i volumi aggiunti, come il box che ospita la collezioni di disegni di Lipchitz nel salone dellultimo piano. Si tratta di un nero metallico, quello delle lastre di ferro naturale stabilizzato, che si propone di usare come materiale ricorrente anche per la quinta a tripla altezza che scherma le nuove scale, per i parapetti delle balconate interne, e per rivestire la torre dellascensore. Lallestimento prevede solo altri due materiali: lacciaio dello scheletro dei moli e dei dissuasori, verniciato opaco, e lintonachino di fi nitura dei pannelli espositivi, di tono neutro assonante con il contesto.

  • We designed a diagram of the functions and their envisioned sizes. We grouped them on the base of their af nity. We superimposed the diagram to the map of the site.The relationship of each group with the surroundings suggested its position in the space: workshops and art spaces facing north on the Canal, auditorium to the south, parallel to the row of houses, and the caf open toward the park. From this simple diagram the project took shape. Instead of tying all the functions together, compacting them in a single building, we designed a group of pavilions and placed them around a central square. Instead of rooms inside a big building, we have small buildings whose scale resonate with the neighbouring urban tissue, and instead of a single building we have a piece of town. We covered this piece of town with a transparent, lightweight roof.Instead of having a single main entrance, as most public buildings do, youll enter the Community Arts Centre as youll enter any square: from all the roads leading to it.

    The organic, wavy form of the roof follows the different heights of the pavilions it covers and shield the central square from the rain. It is composed by an array of vaulted shells whose width matches that of the streets and buildings in the surroundings.Under the transparent roof youll nd benches to rest, trees to provide shade, artworks to anticipate what youll nd inside the pavilions. One side of the covered square is opened toward the park. Here the roof covers an open-air stage. The art gallery and the workshops host a big show. Their south faades are totally open, as if they were huge warehouse doors. Artworks spring out from the workshops and ll the central plaza.

    Due sono i problemi principali per la ricollocazione della biblioteca e dellarchivio camerale allinterno degli spazi individuati nel palazzo Tobia Pallavicino. Il primo costituito dallesigenza di inserire funzioni tipiche e specialistiche quali quelle di una biblioteca di consultazione (e dei relativi impianti) allinterno di un edifi cio monumentale con elementi costruttivi di grande qualit artistica e storica e quindi intoccabili. Il secondo dato dalla necessit e diffi colt di collegamento interno. La nuova struttura di collegamento verticale costituita da una torre che parte dal piano fondi e arriva al terreno. Essa costituita da tre anelli (o tubi) concentrici. Al centro inserito un ascensore oleodinamico, adatto ai disabili, intorno al quale si sviluppa la scala. Il terzo anello (tubo) costituito da un grande scaffale pieno di libri che avvolge completamente scala e ascensore facendo diventare la torre il simbolo della biblioteca: la Torre Libraria. Essa visibile dai principali ambienti della biblioteca e ne il punto di riferimento.Per accentuare leffetto di unitariet, la torreappare isolata rispetto ai vari solai attraversati: infatti, lungo il perimetro, una porzione di pavimento (20 cm) in vetro. Tutta la struttura realizzata in profi lati di acciaio, parte a vista e parte inglobati nello scaffale, che consentono ingombri ridotti, rapidi tempi esecutivi, limitati interventi invasivi grazie al montaggio a secco e impiego di materiali riciclabili per uno sviluppo sostenibile.

    With a straightforward design based on the use of readily avalaible, off the shelf components, PAT. scooped 3rd prize among 500 entries from all over the world in the international competition for the UIA Infopoint pavilion.The concept is based on a 315x315x315 mm metal frame which can be erected either in aluminium lattice post and beams or standard steel HEA 140 profi les with bolted joints. Details are reduced to a minimum.The quality of the design relies on two main elements: the internal diffuse natural light and the sensual shiny surfaces of the walls, which reversing usual practice bring the metal skin of the Isover Extrawall WW to the exterior, revealing its raw, unconventional beauty. While from the outside this soft aluminium skin is protected by glass panes, it is touchable once inside the building, where a central core encloses service spaces and the radio UIA offi ce, suggesting a circular path to the visitor.The space is fi lled with northern light coming from top portholes arranged on the regular grid. Sun rays are blocked by shading devices ready made cutting standard 700 mm polyethylene tubes. From the outside an unusually pointed roof profi le counterpoints the deceptively simple silver box.

    The main entrance is on the fully glazed northern facade, which reveal interior activitiy, while the other three are opaque and avalaible as exhibition surfaces.On the south facade a ventilated cavity between the glass and the insulating panels activates the bioclimatic process of natural ventilation of the building interior, while a fl uttering array of brightly coloured strings pinned to the Isover panels highlights the chimney effect.

    The proposal is aimed at exalting the readability of the spatial qualities of the existing building.The design plays with two elements: the insertion of a series of fragments inside a container with a strong character, the enhancement of this character through the modulation of light.Lights and fragments counterpoints the solidity of the masonry walls of the building, creating new vibrations. The aim is to guide the visitor through an exciting series of spatial experiences.Plus, the tower will become a well serviced and stimulating workplace for its everyday users.From the ground level, the tower is neatly divided in three sectors, three fl anking vertical blades. The design underlines this quality, giving each blade a function and a peculiar kind of light.

  • The frame is in standard section steel profi-les with bolted joints.The central bay -bearing 500 kg/m2- spans 11 m, the two side bays - bearing lighter charges- span 9,2 m.To avoid reducing the height of the ground-floor, the main beams HEA 550 which are needed to sustain the heavier central span are located at roof level, partially suspending the first floor.

    Omes is a company that produces fi ttings forgrindings and cut-off wheels. When we wereapproached by the management to constructnew premises, they already had initial designs in hand. It was the standard pre-cast concrete box mainly in use in the area. As it is usual in this kind of buildings it had the offi ce area on two fl oors on the short side facing the road, and a double height area for the production. We were convinced that for the same budgetwe could offer a superior product in terms ofcomfort, aesthetics and performance. Contrary to local practice (which caused initial hesitancy on the part of the Client), we proposed a steel structure, light andrecyclable. Its superior versatility and reduced sections maximises the potential of the interior space: the production area makes use of the entire ground fl oor, (which we were able to keep at a height of 4.5 metres). The second fl oor, raising up from the core of the building and protected by 2 side terraces, houses offi ces, storeroom, changing rooms and a canteen. The offi ce zone is now surrounded by large glass panes on three sides, allowing the benefi t of natural light and ventilation through the exposure to outdoor breezes.

  • This advantageous height and superior visibility offers the pleasure of a view of the Turin hills and the Alps, creating a relaxing environment for those working with computers. One of the two terraces is accessible by workers and serves as an outdoor communal relax area. A preference for ecologically compatible materials was used, such as in the case of using polyolefines membranes (for waterproofing of the roofs) and linoleum (for the flooring). Where possible, recy-clable materials were chosen (steel and aluminium).The finished building, with its exterior sil-ver coloured panels and its red metal structure, expresses the corporate identi-ty of the company, which produces components in aluminium and has a red logo.The premises where put into use a few days following the completion after eight months of work on site. Thanks to the highly insulated building envelope and the adoption of condensing boilers, a first estimate of overhead costs per year on a metres cubed basis has indicated an approx. 50% saving when compared to the older plant.

    Night view, west elevation. Behind the glass in the central bay it is possible to notice the cross bra-cings of the steel frame. On the right, the box protruding from the facade on the first floor contains the lift.

    The red painted steel frame is only exposed on the interior, thus avoiding thermal bridges and minimizing main-tenance. Anyway, it is possible to perceive the rhythm of the structure on the external skin of the building, where the joints between the clad-ding panels are in correspondence to the pillars.

    On the perimeter, the walls are made of precast concrete blocks with an external siding of insulated metal panels. The space between the two allows the ventilation of the wall.Thermal brake frames are used in all windows.

    Once a warehouse for Cogne, one of the leading producers of stainless steel long products in Europe, this run-down shed was part of a listed industrial village of the early XX century. PAT.was appointed the job to completely renovate it by the Valle dAoste Department of of Natural Resources and Forest Management after winning an open RFT. The building, which has been completely insulated, has new concrete fl oors and a new roof supported by douglas fi r trusses braced by stainless steel cables. It will host a woodworking shop for the forestry corps. During the cold winter months it will be heated by a biomass system, burning the wood scrap it produces.The furnace room, along with the AHU room and the changing room is hosted in a new, steel framed, 2 stories service unit, painted jet black.This volume articulate the interior space in two areas: the proper workshop, heated, and a warehouse.

    PILOT PROJECT FOR AN INDUSTRIALSETTLEMENT

    The project is intended to set the guidelines for an environmentally sustainable industrial developement, based on fl exible, energy effi cient, recyclable buildings.The brief required a pilot 1.000 m2 steel framed factory on a 20x50m plan with a 8m interior height.We proposed a technology matrix combining various typology of framing and cladding elements and their costs. Basing on the matrix, the perspective users, working with the design team, will choose the combination best suited to their needs. In a fashion similar to the confi guration of a new automobile, the clients will easily obtain alternative confi gurations that can be compared on the ground of overall cost and performance. The pre-selected palette of materials and framing systems will guarantee the unity of the whole industrial complex while allowing customizatione and variety in the individual solutions.

    The client had acquired a dismissed shed adjoining his factory. The brief required to integrate the two buildings while requalifying the whole complex, with 4 goals in mind:1. To increase production areas2. To transfer directional offi ces in the new building3. To improve the quality of the working environement4. To forge a new identity conveying the excellence of the company in its fi eldHaving considered the great number of activities taking place inside the buildings and the complexity of their interactions, PAT. developed a meta-project which was the ground for spatail and distributive choices. The resulting concept is adaptable to different physical contexts (the client has facilties in several countries) and could eventually be the basis for a brand new factory.

    The bottling plant for the Coca Cola group in Catania was developed randomly through the gradual aggregation of disomogeneous sheds. The brief required to blend the various sheds, integrating them with two new buildings hosting the offi ces and the Little Coca Cola World, an exhibition space to welcome visitors with an experience both didactical and playful.The design team suggested an holistic approach: fusing beauty to function, it aimed at enhancing both the overall image of the company and its energy performance.

    PAT. and Buonomo Veglia srl are the winners of the competition to design this new complex for TEA spa, a public company managing water, energy and environmental serices for the city of Mantua.In their winning scheme the new buildings are a series of three hills gently landscaped and inserted in a park. They will host offi ces, chemical laboratories, services and parking.

  • The design underlines the character of the place, a complex of old buildings around an internal court, making the court the center of the scheme. From this internal piazza the various functions will be accesible: libraries, public offi ces, cafeteria, media labs.On the fi rst fl oor, an old pitched roof is removed to make space for a public green terrace accessible from the center of the court through a new dramatic stair. The sense of unfi nished of the exisiting buildings is emphasized. New access points and internal functions are provided by technolgical boxes, totally moveable and re-arrangeable according to the mutating requirements in order to provide maximum fl exibility. Externally the old surfaces are cleaned but not repainted. The contrast between old buildings and new insertions is emphasized, underlining the sense of unfi nished of the existing building, a character which is common to the whole urban area.

  • Parco Dora Baltea is a big urban renewalproject. It will transform a former industrial area in the city centre of Ivrea.The city will regain an area lost for years, which will become the heart of the town transport system, services and high technologies. The urban design will link the historical city centre, the Olivetti district and the new suburbs.The Parco Dora Baltea includes a BusinessPark, where three 4 stories buildings are immersed in a serviced green area with anextensive soft landscaping of grass and semi mature trees.The buildings provide 15.000 sqm of grossoffi ce space, subdivided in 60 units of 250 sqm each that can be freely aggregated.The buildings have underground car-parks and over ground parking lots screened by plants.The project has targeted effi ciency in builtform, in construction and in post completionmanagement and showcase high level materials and outfi ts.

    Architects worldwide were invited to develop new construction methods and practices for ef cient shells and settlement units that will satisfy the urgent housing needs engendered by ecological, social, or political crises. The competition was promoted by the Technical Chamber of Greece and the UIA International Work Programme on Architecture and Renewable Energy Sources.In PAT.s proposal, while bamboo framed, metal clad shelters will be easily made from locally available materials, high-tech mobile units will be shipped on the disaster area to serve the new settlements. Exploiting technologies for the aerospace industry, they will provide energy and clean water, and they will host a workshop where tools as well as technical expertise and design guidance will serve the building process. Hundreds of entries received from around the world were exhibited in Athens - Greece, in January 2008. PAT.s design, who gained a $ 10,000 cash award, was then included in a second exhibition of only prize-winning projects which took place during the International Union of Architects XXIII world congress held in Turin (ITALY) in July 2008.

  • The competition was aimed at gathering propos-als for the reuse of the former site of one of the foremost Italian brick factories. The 40.000 mc mixed use scheme include a shopping centre, housing, of ces and small factories. The design is based on two key points: changing the path of the main road and remodeling the ground.

    Results:- reconnection of the former industrial area with the village- a natural park- a new system of pedestrian and cycle routes.- transformation of the railway in tramway.
