SAINT THOMAS MORE CATHOLIC CHURCH

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018

Our Church is a House of Prayer for all People! Our Church and Blessed Sacrament Chapel are open

7:00am-7:00pm, every day. The door on the left side of our main doors

remains unlocked. Please enter and exit through that door.

You are always welcome!

It has been reported that there is a species of fish that lives in the waters off the South American continent that has the ability, with its one set of eyes, to see in two directions—up and down—at the same time.

As it makes its way through the water, it, simultaneously, looks down into the murky depths and looks upward to the sunlight piercing the water’s surface!

Looking in two opposite directions at the same time is, for the human, visually impossible; but, attitudinally, achievable. Indeed, looking in two directions at the same time is essentially necessary in developing a global spirituality.

As one begins to participate with others ecumenically and inter-religiously, as one begins to ask the other, “What do you believe?”, “Why do you practice this ritual?”, and “How does this doctrine have meaning for you?”, the very same questions will be asked of you.

If you do not have the answers, you know that you must quickly search for them. Thus, the quest for knowledge about the other denomination or the other religion automatically becomes a quest for knowledge of one’s own religion, one’s own denomination. The more that one looks outward, the more one will need to look inward. Living ecumenically and inter-religiously, one imitates that fish and looks in two different directions at the same time.

A global spirituality has its beginnings in the person’s willingness to simply gain knowledge and information about others and about oneself. It is about looking for those values that we have in common as religious people. It is looking for the common meanings that lie beyond the words, rituals, and symbols found in our different religions.

One must be willing to live with seeming contradiction, confusion, and doubt. One must be willing to let go of quick answers and comfortable categories. One must not see “the other” as an object of conversion, (bringing the other to my way of thinking or my structured belief system), but seeing the other as a fellow human being trekking up the same mountain to God, but traversing a different path.

Considering Becoming Catholic? Are you searching for

A deeper relationship with God? A sense of belonging in a faith community? A greater fulfillment of your mission in life?

“Inquiry” is the first step in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process: a ministry that welcomes those who would like to explore whether full membership in the Catholic Church through Baptism or a Profession of Faith (if validly baptized in another Christian tradition), Confirmation, and Eucharist is God’s call in your life.

For details, contact Kathleen Bell, RCIA Coordinator, at 760-809-6526 or [email protected].

STM Mental Health Ministry Network STM is a member of the San Diego Diocesan Mental Health Ministry Network (MHMN) and has made a commitment to become a faith community that both understands mental illness and can provide compassionate support. Annual Catholic Appeal | Sharing God’s Gifts Our assessment this year is $50,000. As of June 5, 300 families (23.9% of registered households) have made pledges totalling $59,666. All excess money received over our assessment of $50,000 is returned to the Parish for its own use.

Thanks to all who have already pledged. Every dollar counts!

Ways to respond:

† Return the form you received in the mail

† Pledge online at www.giving.sdcatholic.org

† Pick up a form at the Information Table after Masses or in the Parish Office

† Pray for the success of this effort.

In Memoriam Please pray for the repose of the soul of:

Marv Weekly, who died May 5. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 29, at 10:30am at St. Thomas More. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers.

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

As we begin to reverence one another, as we speak each other’s words, and as we participate in each other’s rituals, we will begin to see and understand our own religion and denomination in fresh and revitalized ways.

Developing a spirituality that is global will allow individuals to live within their own creeds and ritual practices, while respecting those of the other. The spirituality becomes the connector, the link, and the space “in-between” where we find God in a newer and more intimate way. That “in-between” space is “The Beyond In Our Midst” where God is found. That “in-between” space may, indeed, even be God!

As we gather together in so many ways with family and friends, we are mindful that we are rich in our diversity. Even among our own immediate families, we are becoming ever more diverse—different ethnic, racial, religious backgrounds—as the family grows and marries.

Take advantage of all these differences. See them as opportunities to grow spiritually. Take time to get to know the other as a fellow human being, not an object of conversion. Let discussion of these various differences be bridges to bring us closer together. Whatever your religious backgrounds and beliefs, find God in the “in-between” places and spaces!

Women’s Guild News Summer is where the girls go barefoot and their hearts

are as free as their toes. —Author Unknown

Our last meeting of the year was Saturday, June 9, at the Shadowridge Golf Club. At this event we presented Fr. Mike with the hard-earned proceeds of our year of fundraising for the St. Thomas More Seasons Capital Campaign. At the event we had a good time, good food, and good friends getting together before setting off for summer fun and relaxation. In next week’s bulletin the quilt winners will be announced as well as the amount of the check given to Fr. Mike for the St Thomas More Seasons Capital Campaign on behalf of Women’s Guild; it represents all the time and effort you put into our fundraising efforts.

It has been a pleasure being on the Board of this great group of women who are so generous with their time and talent and treasure. I look forward to serving as President this coming year. We already have a list of programs in the works that will entertain and educate us with more information about them in the coming months. Membership—both new and renew—forms are available in Box 35, and a flyer will appear in the bulletin shortly. Be sure to sign up again—or if you are joining for the first time, Welcome! Dues remains at $10 per year. Have a wonderful summer and may God’s blessings be upon you.

If we didn’t see you at the Installation Luncheon, we will see you in September!

Have a fun-filled summer. —Trish Feeley, President

Creation Care Tip: Is the Sun Causing Global Warming? No. The sun can influence the Earth’s climate, but it isn’t responsible for the warming trend that we’ve seen over the past few decades. If the sun were responsible for global warming, we would expect to see warming throughout all of the layers of the atmosphere, from the surface all the way through the upper atmosphere (stratosphere). What we actually see is warming at the surface and cooling in the stratosphere. This is consistent with the warming being caused by a build-up of heat-trapping gases near the surface of the Earth and not by the sun getting hotter. (https://climate.nasa.gov)

In childhood, summer meant cruising the neighborhood on my little blue bike, with its bedazzled banana seat. Dusk was my proverbial stroke of midnight. I reveled in those final moments of the day’s adventure. In my youth, I spent mild, Midwestern nights with friends. Driving around with windows down, our arms sailed on waves of balmy air.

In my adult years, summer pulsed with community living, and I learned the meaning of neighbor. In Boston, we emerged from wintery hibernation hungry for the company of the city. In Houston, we fled hot-box apartments in search of a slight breeze and a communal grill. Today, I spend the summer resting in liminal space and ministering to things that grow. For those of us who work in lay ecclesial ministry, summer signals the waning of high liturgical seasons. I settle into the simple grace of ordinary time and renew a practice of prayer.

A few years ago, I intentionally began practicing contemplative prayer—though I did not yet know what that meant. I was desperate for relief from that anxious anger that feeds on the grief of life. This functional need grew into a desire for God’s presence. And since returning to parish ministry, it has become a professional imperative. I studiously gathered resources to assist me on this quest for stillness but found their spiritual particularities to be stumbling blocks. Then I picked up a book on meditation with no pretense of religion and realized that what I truly sought was a prayer without words.

The Christian tradition differentiates meditation from contemplation. While Christian meditation relies on images and words from Scripture or spiritual writings, contemplation is

the expression of prayer that retains no expression. If quieting this fidgety body for meditative prayer seemed difficult, then quieting the mind amid a barrage of thought seemed impossible to me.

When planning faith formation programming for the year, I secretly dread the obligatory lesson on prayer. Over the years, I convinced myself that I simply follow Paul’s suggestion to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). I do speak with God throughout the day. And a pastoral profession affords me many opportunities to meditate on the nature and activity of the Divine in the world. But I did not know how to be in God’s presence without interjecting my own words.

I tried all sorts of tricks to keep the words out. I counted to ten and started over again. I strenuously focused on the rise and fall of the breath. I centered my prayer on a single word hoping it would be large enough to block out all the others. I even utilized my unique ability to visualize in three-dimensional detail —exhaling the image of a number into being, spinning it around with my mind’s eye, then inhaling it back before exhaling the next in sequence.

Disappointed in my progress and still desperate to quell the anxious anger within, I sought community in a weekly, ecumenical prayer group. One day, a companion on the road told me about the “4 R’s” of centering prayer: Resist no thought, retain no thought, react to no thought, return ever so gently. Truly this was good news! What should have been obvious had eluded me; that a practice of prayer is not a competition. It is worth repeating because so many of us need to hear it. Prayer is not a competition, with others or with the self, and certainly not with God. At once I stopped

SPENDING SUMMER WITH A LIGHT, SILENT SOUND Developing a practice of contemplative prayer

toiling for stillness and remembered Jesus’ unceasing call to metanoia.

The peace I have found in contemplative prayer produces many fruits that bring balance to my pastoral work: the ability to respond rather than react, listen rather than proclaim, wait and watch rather than anticipate and control. Mine is still a nascent practice. Prayer still eludes me most of the time. But to my joyful surprise, contemplative prayer is the practice I turn to most often. It is the threshold that ushers me into that inner room where “silent sound” waits (1 Kings 19:12). If only for a breath’s length, I can hold the world to come within sight, while my gaze remains fixed on the kingdom at hand that is lived out in Christ.

This summer the inhabitants of my backyard beckon me outdoors. And I relish in this ministry of presence that requires no words. My little piece of land nestled between the city and the suburbs becomes my sanctuary. Among the native sandstone boulders that line the back fence I am building a Marian grotto. I wish to sit and pray with Mary of Nazareth, Daughter of Sion, just as the apostles did in that upper room so long ago, contemplating the paschal mystery.

Dear Heavenly Father,

As we dedicate this month of June

to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we ask you to grant to us compassionate hearts;

hearts rich with your love, embraced by your compassion.

Grant us generous hearts:

hearts that never count the cost; hearts that seek to serve and not be served.

Grant us hearts that love peace:

hearts that promote truth and justice, transform hatred and anger,

and seek unity and reconciliation.

Grant us hearts of a steward: hearts that are filled with gratitude,

eager to share, and long to give back to you.

Grant us hearts filled with your Spirit:

hearts open to conversion, filled with hope,

and on fire with your Word.

We pray this in Jesus’ name.

Amen

TOWERS OF FAITH

Future Support & Legacy Planning Options

Towers of Faith is a movement that has arisen due to the vision, leadership, and generosity of several of our Parishioners. We stress that this is about the love and thought behind the gift, and not about the gift amount.

These individuals (several anonymous) have included STM in their estate planning. This helps to ensure their ongoing support and a legacy for our Parish. Towers of Faith is a valuable portion of our future support.

Examples of the various future planning vehicles are:

Designated Beneficiary Accounts, Wills, Living Trusts, Life Insurance, Stocks and Bonds, Real Estate, and

STM Endowment with CCFSD (Catholic Community Foundation of San Diego)

Parishioners who have already included STM in their estate plans are Towers of Faith participants. If you are interested, please contact us. Your participation is most welcome and appreciated!

FIRST DAY (JUNE 14)

Dear St. Thomas More, in your earthly life, you were a model of prudence. You never thrust yourself rashly into any serious undertaking; instead, you tested the strength of your powers and waited on God’s will in prayer and penance, then boldly carried it out without hesitation. Through your prayers and intercession, obtain for me the virtues of patience, prudence, wisdom, and courage.

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory Be...

Glorious St. Thomas More, I beg you to take up my cause, confident that you will advocate for me before God’s Throne with the same zeal and diligence that marked your career on earth. If it be in accord with God’s will, obtain for me the favor I seek, namely _______.

V. Pray for us, O Blessed St. Thomas More.

R. That we may faithfully follow you on the hard road that leads to the narrow gate of eternal life.

SECOND DAY (JUNE 15)

Dear St. Thomas More, in your earthly life, you were a model of diligence. You shunned procrastination, applied yourself with fervor to your studies, and spared no effort in achieving mastery in any skill. Through your prayers and intercession, obtain for me the virtue of diligence and persistence in my preparations for all undertakings.

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory Be...

Glorious St. Thomas More...

THIRD DAY (JUNE 16)

Dear St. Thomas More, in your earthly life, you were a model of industriousness. You threw yourself wholeheartedly into everything you did, and you found enjoyment even in the most serious things. Through your prayers and intercession, obtain for me the grace of always having suitable employment, the grace to find interest in everything fitting, and the fortitude always to pursue excellence in whatever task God gives me to do.

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory Be...

Glorious St. Thomas More...

FOURTH DAY (JUNE 17)

Dear St. Thomas More, in your earthly life, you were a brilliant lawyer and a just and compassionate judge. You attended to the smallest details of your legal duties with the greatest care, and you were unflagging in your pursuit of justice tempered by mercy. Through your prayers and intercession, obtain for me the grace to overcome every temptation to laxity, arrogance, and rash judgment in my (legal) duties.

FIFTH DAY (JUNE 18)

Dear St. Thomas More, in your earthly life, you were a model of humility. You never allowed pride to lead you to take on enterprises beyond your abilities; even in the midst of earthly wealth and honor, you never forgot your total dependence on your Heavenly Father. Through your prayers and intercession, obtain for me the grace of an increase in humility, and the wisdom not to overestimate my own powers.

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory Be...

Glorious St. Thomas More...

SIXTH DAY (JUNE 19)

Dear St. Thomas More, in your earthly life, you were a model husband and father. You were loving and faithful to both of your wives, and a diligent provider and example of virtue for your children. Through your prayers and intercession, obtain for me the grace of a happy home, peace in my family, and the strength to persevere in chastity according to my state of life.

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory Be...

Glorious St. Thomas More...

SEVENTH DAY (JUNE 20)

Dear St. Thomas More, in your earthly life, you were a model of Christian fortitude. You suffered bereavement, disgrace, poverty, imprisonment, and a violent death; yet you bore all with the strength and good cheer for which you were known throughout your life. Through your prayers and intercession, obtain for me the grace to bear all the crosses that God sends me with patience and joy.

EIGHTH DAY (JUNE 21)

Dear St. Thomas More, in your earthly life, you were a loyal child of God and a steadfast son of the Church, never taking your eyes off the crown for which you strove. Even in the face of death, you trusted in God to give you the victory, and He rewarded you with the palm of martyrdom. Through your prayers and intercession, obtain for me and mine the grace of final perseverance and protection from sudden and unprovided death, so that we may one day enjoy the Beatific Vision in your glorious company.

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory Be...

Glorious St. Thomas More...

NINTH DAY (JUNE 22)

Dear St. Thomas More, you spent your whole earthly life preparing for the life to come. Everything you endured prepared you not only for the glory God wished to bestow upon you in heaven, but for your work as the patron of lawyers, judges, and statesmen, and steadfast friend to all who call upon you. Through your prayers and intercession, obtain for us aid in all our necessities, both corporal and spiritual, and the grace to follow in your footsteps, until at last we are safely home with you in the mansions our Father has prepared for us in heaven.

Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory Be...

Glorious St. Thomas More...
