Our Lord Jesus Christ the King November 22, 2015 Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth. — Revelation 1:5

This weekend is the Campaign for Human Development Appeal. This will be handled as a second collection. Checks are to be made payable to our parish.

The Archdiocesan campaign One Faith, One Hope, One Love involves a 5 year pledge: Please promptly return your pledge card—with your yes / no decision to make a donation / pledge---in an envelope, in the collection basket or to the parish office. Contact Tony Russo at 543-8017 or [email protected] for any questions or to volunteer to help with making phone calls. I realize that too much is being asked of you these days: Prayerfully consider your ability to respond to Charitable giving: Thanksgiving Food Drive and the Giving Tree, annual Campaign for Human Development which supports organizations who help people help themselves, and then the 5- year pledge for the Archdiocesan campaign.

Pastoral Council, please remember the Monday November 30th meeting with Bp. Binzer at 7 p.m. in the St. Francis Meeting Room. (I am not expected to be there.)

Dec. 6th: our annual Christmas Caroling and potuck. We will gather at the St. John Vianney rectory parking lot at 2:45, then proceed to either St. Theresa or Indiansprings for Christmas Caroling. Then at 5:00 p.m. we will come back to the rectory for a potluck. Those who do not wish to go caroling are welcome to join us for supper.

Please mark your calendars: Wednesday December 9th 7 p.m. (for one hour ) in our par ish cafeter ia. Parishioners from all 3 parishes are encouraged to come and hear the Pastoral Region Coordinating Committee’s presentation on the Pastoral Region Plan. It is important that we all hear the same message. The advantage to being present is to be a part of the interaction and the question and answer part. There is a plan to videotape this gathering so that those who cannot make the Dec. 9th meeting can still hear this presentation.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones! This year I will be at St. Anthony’s 9:00 a.m. Mass that morning, while Fr. Paul will preside at the 10:00 a.m. Mass here. I will be away on a week’s retreat at Gethsemani Abbey outside Bardstown KY, from the day after Thanksgiving. Please pray for me.

Paula’s Corner … Year of Mercy-Coming Soon!

As we move into the Year of Mercy, we will be reflecting on the wideness of God’s Mercy. One of the means for doing this is an extended Penitential Rite. As we move through the weeks of Advent, we will build up toward a common reconciliation time during the penitential rite in the mass. The penitential form we will use is long on mercy and very short on sin. There will be no laundry list of sins, no reflection from the priest, and no formal recitation of “Bless me Father…” This is a simple form of reconciliation that shares the wideness of God’s mercy.

To make this possible, we all need to reflect on the root problem of our sin. As we approach the priest, we will say only one word that hones in our our sinfulness. One way to hone in on the one word that captures our sinfulness is to spend some time reflecting on the seven deadly sins: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Anger, Envy and Pride.

Lust: an intense and uncontrolled desire. Lust could include the uncontrolled desire for money, fame, food or power.

Gluttony: the over indulgence and overconsumption of anything to the point of waste. Gluttony can include food, TV, social media, shopping, utilities, gas.

Greed: is an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs, especially with respect to material wealth. Greed can include hording, amassing large collections of stuff, an excessive pursuit of material possessions.

Sloth: can entail different vices. Often thought of as physical laziness, spiritual laziness is the real emphasis. It is the failure to grow spiritually. It is the failure to use one’s gifts and talents. It is the failure to do the things one should do. Evil exists in the world when good people fail to act.

Anger: inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of anger and hatred. Feelings of anger can manifest in different ways, including impatience, revenge, or self destructive behaviors (drugs, alcohol, over eating, suicide).

Envy: an insatiable desire to depr ive someone of their goods, status, abilities, and rewards. It is gaining pleasure by seeing others brought low.

Pride: believing that one is essentially better than others (bigotry, failure to identify with the poor and the immigrant), failing to acknowledge the accomplishments of others, excessive admiration of the personal self, and unjustified boasting.

As we continue our preparations, we will reflect a little more deeply on each of these.

Christ the King

As we approach the end of this liturgical year and begin to prepare for the new liturgical year and the beginning of the Year of Mercy and Advent, it is appropriate to reflect on our faith life. Here is an excerpt from Ron Rolheiser to ponder.

For the Christian, the important question is not “Am I happy?” but “Is my life meaningful?” “Is my life meaningful?” When I ask the question this way the perspective is very different. Now my happiness will no longer depend upon my never getting sick, or upon my not getting lonely, or upon my never being misunderstood, or upon my never making wrong choices, or somehow being exempt from death’s shadow. Life can be frustrating and still be very meaningful. We can be lonely, sick, sorrowful about wrong choices, over-worked and unappreciated, staring old age and death in the face and still experience deep meaning. Happiness will be a by-product of that. Are my symbols working? Is my faith deep enough so that every corner of my experience, no matter how painful, makes some sense in a higher plan? Is God with me as I walk through both health and sickness, joy and sorrow, friendship and loneliness, success and failure, youth and aging? Does my life have meaning? The ques-tions about happiness comes after that question.

What can you do to make your life more meaningful?

NOVEMBER 22, 2015 THIS WEEK’S READINGS

First Reading — One like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship (Daniel 7:13-14). Psalm — The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty (Psalm 93). Second Reading — Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead (Revelation 1:5-8). Gospel — For this I came into the world, to testify to the truth (John 18:33b-37).

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS NOVEMBER 29, 2015

First Reading — The days are coming when the LORD will fulfill the promise made to Israel and Judah (Jeremiah 33:14-16). Psalm — To you, O Lord, I lift my soul (Psalm 25). Second Reading — May the Lord make you increase and abound in love that you may be blameless in holiness; conduct yourselves so as to please God (1 Thessalonians 3:12 — 4:2). Gospel — There will be signs and you will see the Son of Man coming with power and great glory. Be vigilant (Luke 21:25-28, 34-36).

TRUE STEWARDSHIP The gospel message proclaimed throughout the New Testament invites us to live in harmony with the world. This is a challenge to care for the world and be stewards of all that God has given us. Like generations before us, we are entrusted with the care of the earth so that generations to follow may enjoy the same gifts. Sometimes, however, we are absorbed into the ways of the world. When we are of the world, we rely heavily on the power of wealth, beauty, fame, and accumulation of material possessions. We want earthly possessions and carelessly turn our hearts from the responsibilities of stewardship and conservation. The readings today challenge us to walk away from the world so that we might inherit our share of God’s kingdom. How we live our lives directly reflects our love for God.

Almighty Father,

You have created us for some definite purpose. Grant us the grace to know the path You have planned for us in this life And to respond with a generous “Yes”. Make our archdiocese, parishes, homes and hearts fruitful ground for Your gift of vocations. May our young people respond to Your call with courage and zeal. Stir among our men a desire and the strength to be good and holy priests. Bless us with consecrated religious and those called to a chaste single life, permanent deacons, and faithful husbands and wives, who are a sign of Christ’s love for His Church. We commend our prayer for vocations to You, Father, through the intercession of Mary our Mother, in the Holy Spirit, through Christ our Lord. Amen

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For good reason, Americans have been ambivalent about “kings” for many years, even long before George III’s troops were sent packing in 1776. To say Christ is our King is to make a statement not about our politics, but about the dignity of our own identity. At our baptism, the crown of our head was once slathered (or at last dabbed) with oil while the Church prayed “as Christ was anointed priest, prophet and king, so may you live always as his body.” To celebrate Christ’s kingship, then, is to claim our own identity. Your head was anointed just as Samuel poured oil over David’s head. David had his gifts, but he was no prize, and perhaps that might comfort you as you think about your call, out of the messiness of your own life, to stretch into a lifestyle that is marked by worship, by pro-phetic speech and deeds, and the kingly ability to fashion a world (or at least a patch of it) where relationships are marked by justice, mercy, and cultivation of the good. It is precisely because of this kingly role that our faith com-munity has something to say about the environment, about the dignity of human life, just wages, access to health care and education, the building of peace, and avoidance of war. In a few weeks’ time we will hymn the coming of the “newborn king,” but today we sketch out the meaning of his reign, and our own incorporation into his work for the life of the world.
