On Rally Sunday, August 26, we gathered for our Mission Decision Event and ate, learned, brainstormed, and voted on possibilities for Thyatira's mission in our local community. Thanks especially to the Men of the Church for cooking, and for the Strategic Planning Steering Committee for planning and hosting the event.

IF YOU WERE NOT ABLE TO ATTEND, we still want to hear your voice! The worksheets we used to share ideas about four possible areas for mission will remain posted in Fellowship Hall through the second Sunday in September. Following worship on September 2 and 9, we'll offer a very brief summary of the event and you'll have the opportunity to review our work and cast your vote.

We will not have a Men of the Church Breakfast in September due to the Labor Day weekend. We will join together again for breakfast and fellowship at 8:00am on Sunday, October 7. Please join us!

If you, a family member, or friend would like to be added to our Phone Prayer Chain, please call Jim Albright at 704-279-3317. Thyatira's Phone Prayer Chain is different from being added to our e-newsletter, mailed newsletter, and bulletin. We have 3 people that spread the word by calling approximately 25 prayer list members, who add your request to their daily prayers. Whatever your prayer need is, finding peace of mind provides a foundation

of strength to face any situation. Your request is a sacred trust and is kept confidential among our prayer list members.

Prayer, Song & Study Prayer, Song, and Study will resume on Wednesday evening, September 17 from 6:30-7:30.

For the next few weeks, we'll be looking at Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Letter From Birmingham Jail which is being considered for inclusion in the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s Book of Confessions. This profoundly thoughtful and influential document written more than 50 years ago still has much to speak to our nation's realities. Even if you are not able to attend on a regular basis, please join us for this study of Dr. King's letter. We'll be blessed by your presence.

Sanctuary Flowers

Flowers on our communion table brings the beauty of nature into our place of worship. Flowers are also a way to recognize and honor special people or occasions. If you would like to purchase flowers to honor someone or commemorate a special event, the cost is $57.25 for one center vase or 2 side vases for $100. Fill out the form below and put it in the offering plate or mail it to the church. Payment should be made 2 weeks in advance of the requested date, payable to Thyatira. Upcoming available dates 9/9, 9/16, 9/23, 9/30. For other available dates, you may call the church office at 704-636-1595 or check the signup sheet on the bulletin board outside the office.

Troop Scoop

Troop 476 has begun meeting for the new year. We meet each week on Monday at 6:30 in the Mission Resource Center. Any young man who has finished 5th grade or turned 11 years old is welcome to join.

Austin Parker is currently working on an Eagle Scout project installing a playground for disabled students at Southeast Middle School. Anyone who'd like to help or provide support for his project should contact Greg Hager.

Boy Scouts will be participating in a food drive for Rowan Helping Ministries in October, so wait till then to clean your cabinets.

A good time was had by all at Homecoming, especially Thyatira’s four most recently installed pastors. Thanks to the Fellowship Committee, Deacons, Scouts, and others who helped set up and clean up. And of course, thank you for all the food!

T-man’s 5k

Please join in this effort to raise funds and awareness about suicide in memory of Thyatira's own Tristen Hobbs.

The TMan 5K was created in an effort to help honor Tristen's fearlessness, joy and love for life and others. We have teamed up with the Jeff Yalden

Non-Profit Organization, which is passionate about the well-being of our youth. We are on a mission to protect our children and other families from knowing the pain of losing their child to suicide.

November Is Pharmacology Awareness Month The effects of medications, the interactions and their relationships to individual patients are becoming of greater concern in the medical world. While doctors are becoming more aware of the need to exercise care in prescribing pain medications and antibiotics, an aging population means that taking multiple medications for different conditions is a way of life for many. According to an article in American Nurse Today, 44% of men and 57% of women over 65 take five or more medications per week; about 12% of both take more than 10 medications per week. Knowledge of specific steps in effective medication management should be important to everyone.

• Ask your provider if the dosage is age-appropriate. There is a list of medications that older adults should avoid or use with caution. Some drugs pose a higher risk of side effects or interactions, while others are simply less effective. You should feel free to ask your pharmacist about a medication prescribed for you.

• Because of the way the body metabolizes various drugs as we age, we may be more sensitive to some drugs and less sensitive to others. Be sure to read all instructions carefully. Some individuals take an incorrect dosage because they misread the instructions.

• Bring the list of medications, over-the counter drugs and any herbal supplements you might be taking and share the list with your provider. Over-the-counter drugs, like any prescription drug, can have specific side effects. Much harm can be done by individuals deciding that they will medicate themselves without their doctor’s knowledge.

• For those who simply have trouble tracking their medications, a reminder system which works with arranging medicines by times and days of the week will be very useful.

• Get a second opinion if you are concerned. Patients no longer feel that they have no right to ask questions.

• Make sure that the pharmacy label says why you are taking the prescription. This can help everyone be sure that a person is not receiving too many medicines for the same problem.

• Minimize the number of providers and pharmacists you use. American Nurse Today advises people use only one pharmacy to obtain medications; this adds another level of review to be sure that appropriate dosage is maintained and any risks are avoided.

• Talk to your pharmacist and ask questions if you need to know how a new medication may affect you.

• Tell your provider about any adverse reactions to drugs. Allergic reactions to medications can happen at any time. It is important to note any change you experience while taking a medication.

Whether you are trying to research a medication or some other health issue, it is a good general rule to not always believe everything you read. It is wise to remember that websites sponsored by the U.S. government, non-profit health or medical organizations, and university medical centers are the most reliable health resources on the internet. It is also important to realize that medical information is constantly changing so be aware of the date the information was published to be sure that it is current. While there are many reliable websites for health information, two of the best with ease of use are: Medlineplus.gov: Sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and managed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. MayoClinic.com: Owned by the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research.

Registration Open! We are still have a few openings and accepting applications for 3 and 4 year olds (age as of August 31, 2018) for the 2018-2019 school year. If you know someone who may be interested, please have them contact the church office at 704-636-1595 or go to the church website for the registration packet and more information.

We were so excited to see everyone at Open House! Teachers met their new students and their parents and classmates were happy to get caught up after the summer break. Now we are ready for an exciting new year of preschool, making friends and learning new things.

Looking Ahead… Grandparents Day is Thursday, September 27. Please let your Nana, Pappy, Mamaw, Papaw, or Grandfriends know all about it. We want every child to have someone special here that day.
