Sunday, May 28, 2017 The Ascension Of The Lord
SHARE THE HOPE The readings for today's celebration of the Ascension of the Lord once again remind us that as Christians we are people of hope. In the second reading Saint Paul eloquently exhorts the Ephesians to enlighten their hearts so that they will know the hope and glory that come from being people who place their trust in the Lord Jesus. In the story of the Ascension, recounted in the first reading, the Lord Jesus assures the disciples that the Holy Spirit's power will come upon them. Finally, in the Gospel, the Lord lets the disciples know that their mission is to spread the hope of the gospel to all the nations. This wonderful feast keeps our eyes focused on the hope in which we were grounded on the day of our baptism. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
If you could somehow transport a third-century Christian into your twenty-first-century Sunday Mass, once the initial shock wore off he or she would be more or less at home with the structure of the first part of the liturgy, the Word. The second part might be more difficult to comprehend. The stumbling block would be the book. We have a book, a missal that is set down on the altar with a very precisely prescribed set of words for the priest to say and the people to sing at the Eucharistic Prayer. In the early days of the church, there were no set "formulas" for this prayer. The ancients would have raised eyebrows at our "bookishness" since they preferred to let the prayers roll forth from a gifted leader of prayer. There was a basic shape to the prayer of thanksgiving, and almost general agreement that the words of Christ at the Last Supper ought to be included. By the second century, Justin Martyr wrote that the presider "gives thanks at some length . . . and when he has finished the prayers and the thanksgiving, all the people present give their assent by saying 'Amen.' " In the world before books, people could memorize long passages of prose and poetry, and so it is easy to see how particular phrases or expressions passed from church to church. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Mary Undoer of Knots
Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exists in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon me and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life. You know very well how desperate I am, my pain and how I am bound by these knots. Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of His children, I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life. No one, not even the evil one himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone. Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot...I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all, You are my hope. O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives me, the fortification of my feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution and with Christ the freedom from my chains. Hear my plea. Keep me, guide me, protect me, o safe refuge! Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

IT’S TIME There’s an old saying that goes, “Once a Catholic, always a Catholic.” Maybe you have been away from the Church for a little while or for quite some time, but now you feel a tug at your heart calling you back to the Catholic Church. Listen to that tug. It’s your Heavenly Father reaching his arms out to you, the Holy Spirit whispering in your ear, hoping to draw you home. We hope you accept this as your invitation to rediscover the truth, wonder and mystery of the Catholic faith. As your brothers and sisters in our worldwide Catholic family, we want you back. We’ve missed you, and our Church is not the same without you. Regardless of why you left or got out of the habit of going to Mass, you can always come home and return to the practice of the sacraments and the fullness of relationship with Jesus Christ and the Church he founded. We are Catholic. Welcome home.
WEDNESDAY, May 24th Parish Hall at 6:00PM
As we continue Part 2 of The Mass, see how the Liturgy of the Word and te Eucharist go hand in hand, bringing us closer in unity with Christ. See the sacred vessels and items used at Mass up close as you come to understand the deep history behind The Mass of our Catholic faith.
Have your thought about Mass Intentions?
The Church considers the Mass the greatest possible prayer of intercession insofar as it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the paschal mystery of His death and resurrection. When offering the holy sacrifice of the Mass, it is usually considered that special graces may be obtained when it applies to a particular intention.
If you would like to have a Mass said for someone who has died or someone in need of prayer, the Holy Mass is the perfect prayer of intercession for these intentions.
Mass intentions for weekend masses are noted in the opening remarks and included in the Prayer of the Faithful. At your request, a Mass Intention Card for your intention may be mailed from the parish.
The recommended stipend for a single Mass Intention is $10.00. Mass Intentions may be made in person or calling the Parish Office .
Mark your calendars for Vacation Bible School July 26-30, 2017, 6:00-8:30PM St. John the Baptist Church!
Tracking Mary: Mysteries & Messages
Vacation Bible School
This year’s program entitled Tracking Mary: Mysteries & Messages, features the Queen of Heaven Express – a special holy train traveling to faraway places around the globe visited by our Blessed Mother: Lourdes, Fatima, Guadalupe, England, and Ireland. Children discover how Mary brings us closer to Jesus through the power of the Rosary. Mysteries and Messages are revealed at each stop. The program focuses on Catholic identity and teaches the Bible from the Catholic perspective. It introduces saints as faith heroes and heroines while encouraging family prayer through a daily Rosary. Children will enjoy skits, activities, snacks, and games.
