Page 2: PASTOR Father Steven Clarke St. joseph

Dear Friends, Christ our Lord did not simply encourage His disciples to pray. He continually extoled His followers to pray without ceasing. In today’s Gospel we are told “to pray always without becoming weary.” Perseverance in prayer will always be rewarded by Our Heavenly Father. To illustrate this point, Our Lord presents us with the parable of the judge and a widow who continually petitioned him to “render a just decision…against (her) adversary.” It is interesting to note that this parable also touches upon the issue of justice in this life. The widow does not simply ask the judge to decide in her favor. She asks for justice. From the context of the parable it is clear that she has been seriously wronged and simply demands that justice be done. We do not know more about the case at hand, but it is clear that the specific injustice in question has gone on for a long time. This widow had been persistent over an extended period of time. Perhaps some people would have given up hope, but this specific woman persevered until the end and that is why she received justice. Although the judge finally agrees to deliver justice for the widow, his decision is not motivated by purely noble intentions. He realizes that the widow deserves justice, but this is not the underlying reason for his decision. He simply wants to avoid the bother of having to endure her pestering. In the end justice is served, but not because of any higher ideals. This fact underscores the reason that the Christian should all the more trust in the providence and goodness of God when he prays. He is an all loving Father who intensely desires our good. In Matthew’s Gospel, Christ reminds us that He is even infinitely more loving than a natural father toward his own son (Mt. 7:7-11). We should never doubt His goodness even if our petitions and prayers are not answered immediately. There is always a reason that our prayers are not answered as quickly as we would like. Perseverance in prayer, as Our Lord points out, is really the measure of our confidence in God. If He really is Who He claims to be we should never lose our trust in Him, even if He seems indifferent to our plight. As we see in today’s first reading from Exodus, it was the perseverance of Moses, as he lifted up his hands, than won the battle for Israel. Perseverance is always rewarded by God. He indeed knows the proper time and way to answer all of our prayers. The disciple who firmly believes in this truth will never become despondent or frustrated in prayer. On the contrary, his trust will teach Him that God always has a supremely better reason for the “when” and “what” He gives us in response to our prayers.

In Christ, Fr. Steven
