9th Annual Mile High International Pastel Exhibition, 2013

Lorenzo Chavez was born in New Mexico, where the striking landscapes, varied cultures and colorful history helped him develop an appreciation for art at an early age. He studied at the Colorado Institute of Art and the Art Students League of Denver. Intensive private study of the Impressionists and 19th century American and Russian painters have made him aware of the wonderful possibilities and importance of painting from life.

Chavez exhibits in national invitational exhibitions across the country, including the Pastel Society of America, Artists of America, The Northwest Rendezvous Group, C.M. Russell Museum, Laguna Art Museum, Gilcrease Museum, Bradford Brinton Memorial & Museum and many others. This year he is a guest artist in the Summer Exhibition of the Plein Air Painters of America.

Lorenzo’s work is featured in many prominent galleries and magazines, including Art of the West, Southwest Art, Pastel Journal, Art-Talk, American Artist and The Artist’s Magazine. Lorenzo’s paintings are included in such art books as Pure Color; The Best of Pastel, Art Journey America, The Plein Air Year, Colorado Landscapes and Les Maitres du Pastel France 2012.

piñon, pine and juniper, the willows that line the stream banks, the granite in the mountain ranges, aspens and the endless seas of grasses are all subjects for my ever-exploring eyes.

“I strive to represent landscapes that have a timeless appeal to them. I want the emotion I feel to come through in the surface textures of the art. The colors, textures and light of the western landscape inspire and guide my work. It is the simple glimpses into nature that move me to create. Wallace Stegner said it in brevity of words, “A few cottonwoods, the gurgle of water in a creek or ditch, can have as profound effect on me as the grandest view.”

Lorenzo is an active member of the Western Rendezvous of Art, California Art Club, American Impressionist Society, Pastel Society of Spain and Pastel Society of Colorado. Lorenzo is a passionate workshop instructor of plein air painting and has been a judge for numerous pastel exhibitions across the country.

Chavez says, “My Art reflects my deep passion for the Landscape of the American West. My hope is that the qualities represented in the art traditions of American painters such as the Taos Society of Artists and the American Impressionists are also echoed in my work. I was born and raised in the southern-most point of the Rockies in New Mexico. Through the years, while searching for subject matter, I have realized there are many similarities throughout the Rockies. I love the deep blue of the vaulting sky, clouds that float and dance, rabbit brush, chamisa,

A Message from Scott Leckrone, President of Pastel Society of ColoradoWelcome to the 9th Annual Mile High International Pastel Exhibition! I’d like to tell you a little about our great organization.

PSC was formed in 1994 by six artists to promote the soft pastel medium and to encour-age the appreciation and art of pastel painting. PSC has become a far-reaching organiza-tion, uniting artists across the Rocky Mountains and beyond. Our six founding members formed the society on the Western Slope of Colorado in 1994 and though most mem-bers do live in Colorado, members hail from all over including, Utah, Wyoming, Texas, Kansas, Tennessee, Maryland, New Mexico, California, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Oregon, New Jersey and Ohio. We feature many excellent artists some of whose names you will find on the rosters of other top shows and in the current art literature.

Our membership includes all levels of pastelists – beginning artists, emerging and professional artists – who have a passion for art created in pastel. PSC sponsors programs to unite, inform and promote pastel artists of every skill level and expertise. Meetings and demonstrations are held on the second Saturday of each month in Denver and on the third Saturday of each month in Grand Junction. In addition to the Mile High International, member’s exhibitions are held annually, giving all members an opportunity to show, sell and receive recognition for their pastel paintings. The PSC newsletter connects and informs our group in an exchange of news, ideas and members’ achievements. Our website, PastelSocietyofColorado.org, provides additional opportunities for exposure of mem-bers’ paintings. A major workshop is sponsored by PSC each year, bringing the nation’s top pastelists to teach in Colorado.

The Pastel Society of Colorado is a great group of people working with other pastel organizations to increase rec-ognition of the pastel medium in the art world. PSC is an active member of the International Association of Pastel Societies and takes part in the biennial conventions of that umbrella group. Please check out our website and if you too have a passion for pastel, consider joining The Pastel Society of Colorado. I hope you enjoy this show!

A Few Words About the Pastel MediumThe roots of pastel painting go back at least to the sixteenth century and you might even say to the prehistoric cave paintings of Europe. However pastel really gained popularity in the 19th century, helped by Edgar Degas and Mary Cassatt who used it to create their most impressive work. Pastels are not chalk and the name does not refer to pale colors. Professional grade pastels are dry sticks of nearly pure pigment which are rubbed across a slightly abrasive sur-face that grips the microscopic granules of color. The surface can be specially treated paper, panel or even canvas. While serious pastelists often employ many hundreds of colors, additional colors are created by layering one atop another, varying the pressure of each stroke. The effects to be achieved are limitless and may range from photo-realistic to completely impressionistic or abstract.

Pastel paintings are displayed under glass to prevent smudging, however that does not imply any lack of perma-nence. Pastel paintings can be expected to look as good in hundreds of years as the day they left the studio. No painting, however, should be exposed to direct sunlight but that is true of oil and acrylic as well. In fact the pres-ence of high quality glass will actually make pastels somewhat more resistant to the effects of ultraviolet light. As all the work in this exhibition of pastel paintings is for sale, the artists who rose to the challenge of this difficult medium hope you will consider acquiring one of their remarkable efforts for your endless enjoyment.

A little second grader told me when I asked what she had learned about art, “I learned Colors are like words.” As a co-chair of this exhibition I would say the pieces that have been selected from a group of 260, speak the words of art so beautifully. Each piece has “color words” that express the artist’s passion and understanding of the medium of pas-tel. It is no small accomplishment for an artist to gather all the knowledge and expertise they need and put it together in a beautiful and pleasing way. Congratulations to all these amazing artists, and I thank them for sharing their art with us. It has been a pleasure to work with the other three co-chairs: Bev Lee, Mike Ray and Gary Huber.

When Lorenzo Chavez was asked what guidelines he used to jury this show, he told me he looked for a painting that grabbed him emotionally, was it well designed and was it drawn masterfully. He needs to know the subject was painted with conviction and knowledge. He said he felt privileged to be looking at so many really good paintings from artists working in the same medium as him. He encourages each artist, accepted or declined, to never give up. Always look forward, feel a passion for what you do and paint what you love and know.
