Welcome to RiverheadAt the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce we invite you to discover all that Riverhead has to offer. Here at the end, or some may say the beginning of the Long Island Expressway, you’ll fi nd the East End’s gateway town and epicenter of Long Island’s backyard! Superb beaches, renown golf courses, widely acclaimed vineyards and wineries, a world class Aquarium, a thrill fi lled water theme park, leading hotels, country inns and restaurants for every taste and budget, all set against the beautiful backdrop of Long Island’s east end.

Riverhead serves as the East End’s retail and service mecca. Beginning with the Tanger Outlets at Exits 72 and 73, the 132 acre shopper’s paradise is home to over 165 manufacturers and designer outlet stores. Just east on Route 25, visitors can enjoy our downtown pubs, bistros and brand new world class restaurants, or shop the quaint, unique shops that dot Polishtown, Main Street and country roads. Visitors can shop ‘local” at our famous farm stands and “pick your own” farms that dot every road leading to and out of our great town. Families have been shopping in Riverhead since it’s founding in 1792 as “the marketplace of eastern Long Island”, one visit and you’ll understand why!

In more recent years, Riverhead has also become home to family entertainment and east end getaway weekends. Splish Splash Water Park adds new attractions each season, families visit Atlantis Aquarium year round and the Chamber is thrilled to welcome the brand new Long Island Exhibition Center featuring “Butterfl ies”, its’ fi rst rotating exhibit set to debut Summer 2011.

With the growth of agritourism and destination weddings on the East End, leading hotel brands have sprouted up throughout the town, in addition to the Hilton Garden Inn, Holiday Inn, and newly opened Hotel Indigo, Hyatt Place will open summer 2011 in downtown.

It is an honor to serve as President of the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce. Our entire focus is the support of the Riverhead market. We’re currently working on introducing a consumer oriented marketing program designed to support our members and build a bridge to the many consumers that live, work and play in Riverhead.

Where else can one enjoy a relaxing moment at a pastoral winery, bite into a kielbasa sandwich in Polish Town and frolic with the penguins at Atlantis Aquarium all in one day? You can also brave the big slide at Splish Splash, hit that perfect nine-iron on one of our challenging golf courses, and complete your day watching a glorious sunset over the Long Island Sound.

For family fun, fi ne dining, great people and beautiful scenery Riverhead truly has it all. Riverhead is situated on the North Shore of Long Island and acts as the Gateway to the East End. We are a community with a rich agricultural history and we manage to embrace our past while planning for our future.

We are busy revitalizing our downtown. The art-deco Suffolk Theater renovations are underway and the new Hyatt Hotel is near completion. The downtown restaurant scene continues to grow as Dark Horse Catering opened a lively new eatery at our most prominent corner and two new restaurants are making their way to Main Street this spring. The Riverhead Project and Cody’s BBQ and Grill will bring us fresh new dining experiences. For new shopping experiences, OMG opened its doors selling unique gifts for people of all ages and the Red Collection offers fi ne antiques and furniture. These businesses will bring new vitality to a downtown already chock full of eateries, retail shops, restaurants, museums and the renowned Atlantis Aquarium.

Outside of downtown you can experience one-of-a-kind shopping at the Tanger Outlet center or visit the many national retailers located on Route 58. Our farms are legendary and synonymous with the Long Island potato; we offer local produce, nursery products and world class wines.

Riverhead’s recreational facilities are a delight for any traveler. We offer parks, waterways, beaches, hiking trails, fi shing, boating, golf and skydiving.

Whether it is for a brief visit or an extended stay, you’ll never run out of things to do. In Riverhead there is a whole new world to discover!

I’d like to welcome you to Riverhead,

the gateway to Long Island’s North and South Forks. The traditional seat of county government, Riverhead offers residents and visitors alike sensational recreational and cultural activities as well as natural beauty. When talking about all the things to do in Riverhead, it’s hard to think of where to start. The charming downtown business area

is nestled along the Peconic River before the river expands into Flanders Bay. Downtown, you’ll fi nd a wide variety of excellent restaurants, both upscale and casual, along with many cultural attractions, including the Atlantis Marine World aquarium. Just down the river from the downtown area you’ll fi nd top-notch County Park. Adjacent to the park is Indian Island Country Club, a county golf course that features a challenging layout and many gorgeous holes fronting the Peconic River and Sawmill Creek. Heading up the river on the other side of downtown is the shopping mecca of Tanger Outlet Center and Splish Splash Water Park. As you’ll see, there is truly something for everyone in Riverhead. There are many great places to fi sh, golf, swim, boat or just relax at the shoreline. You can spend the day visiting a celebrated vineyard or watching a car race on one of the few remaining short track circuits in the country. You can visit a farm stand and drive by miles of farmland. Or you could just admire the view of the Long Island Sound from atop shoreline bluffs that in some places are more than one hundred feet above the water. The following pages will give you a even better idea of why Riverhead should be on top of your list of places to visit, live, work or raise a family. Hope you enjoy the area as much as I do.

Since the earliest days of Long Island’s settlement more than 300 years ago, agriculture has been an important industry, providing fresh vegetables and fruit, fi ber, seafood, poultry, and a variety of horticultural products for our residents. Today’s farming activities also help to preserve wildlife habitats and the natural aesthetic beauty of our fair island. Born in Riverhead, and raised in Westhampton, Liz considers the whole East End her “home.”Viewers are drawn to her canvases because they are of familiar or of the nostalgic scenes of yesterday, which are stripped of their beauty and history only to make way for new developments. Her art is charged with strong personal emotion with a deep attachment to our everyday world. She loved it when someone once described her work as “Hopper-ish” with a whimsical touch!Liz’s parents, Rudy Duerschmidt and Beatrice Harris, were graduates of Riverhead High School and were raised in the Polish Town area. As a matter of fact, Liz debuted her artistic talents at the Polish Town Fair in 1978 selling her pen and ink drawings of Saint Isidore’s Church and the Gingerbread House.As a child Liz spent many summers at her Uncle Ed and Aunt Louis Tomaszewski’s farm on Twomey Avenue in Calverton. This is where she feels her fascination for old farm trucks and tractors originated.Although Liz is mostly known for her portrayal of historic buildings, towns and bright landscapes, her true creative passion is for old pickup trucks (old “farm hands” tucked behind barns and covered in weeds). Liz scouts out these scenes by driving around the East End in her 1951 Chevy 3100 Deluxe pick up truck.Liz’s work is represented by Fitzgerald Gallery, 48-B Main Street, Westhampton Beach, New York 11978 (631-288-6419).

Home to seven Nobel Prizes, Brookhaven National Laboratory, located in Upton, Long Island – about 10 miles west of Riverhead – is one of 10 national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Brookhaven Lab conducts research in a wide variety of sciences, energy technologies, and national security.

Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) manages the Laboratory for the Department of Energy. BSA is a limited-liability company founded by the Research Foundation of the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University and Battelle Memorial Institute, a nonprofi t, applied science and technology organization.

Brookhaven has a staff of approximately 3,000 scientists, engineers, technicians and sup-port staff and hosts over 4,000 guest researchers annually.

Signifi cant DiscoveriesGroundbreaking discoveries in numerous fi elds have been made at the Laboratory. These include:

• Evidence that matter existed as a “perfect” liquid in the early universe• L-dopa to treat Parkinson’s disease• First synthesis of human insulin• Advances in understanding high-temperature superconductors• Synthesis of technetium-99m, used to diagnose heart disease and other

ailments in 11 million people annually• An understanding of brain activity associated with addiction

Economic EngineBrookhaven Lab strengthens Long Island’s position as a center of innovation in energy, life sciences, and other fi elds crucial for the growth of New York State’s economy. A recent report issued by Appleseed, a Manhattan-based consulting fi rm, indicates that the Lab generated 5,400 jobs in New York State, 5,190 of them on Long Island, in fi scal year 2009. It is estimated that between 2010 and 2014, Brookhaven Lab will generate, on an average annual basis, $947 million in economic output and 7,092 jobs throughout New York State.

Summer SundaysBrookhaven Lab opens its doors to the public on fi ve Sundays in the summer. This year, the public is invited to tour the Lab’s world-class facilities and attend interesting talks and entertaining shows about science each Sunday from July 17 through August 14. Through interac-tive programs and exhibits, the Long Island Science Center, a not-for-profit museum, promotes the knowledge and the love of math, science and technology. Schools, or-ganizations, scout groups and the public can choose from over 50 programs. The LISC serves as a resource for families (programs from Pre-K and interactive activi-ties in our Fetch Zone) teachers (class vis-its; in-service courses, tested curriculum) and students (internships for middle, high and college students). LISC offers science lectures and demonstrations and provides companies the opportunity to highlight and share with the public innovations in science and technology.
