Goldberg’s Famous

THE HISTORY OF GOLDBERG’S FAMOUSIn 1920, Izzy Goldberg fled Poland to come to America. With only the clothing on his back and a little black note-book containing his father’s secret bagel recipes, Izzy set out to carry on his family’s legacy.

In 1928 Izzy met Helen Fetner and they were married. Living in Brooklyn, Izzy began his first Bagel Bakery in the Bronx, baking in a brick oven using a wooden plank. Bagels were the size of today’s minis and were only baked in plain and salt, selling at a penny a bagel. Izzy and Helen had four sons, Artie, Al, Jerry, and Marty. As their boys grew, so did their Bagel Bakery. As each son became old enough they began working in the bagel bakery and in 1949 “Goldberg’s Famous” was born. Artie, Al, Jerry, and Marty branched out to Brooklyn, the Bronx and later Bagel Chateau in Manhattan and New Jersey; becoming pioneers in the bagel restaurant con-cept within New Jersey.

In 1998 Uncle Marty and Artie’s son Marc brought Gold-berg’s Famous to the Hamptons, starting in Southamp-ton and then together in East Hampton. Today, Marty’s son Jacob along with his childhood friend Chris have expanded the business even further, opening the new-est location right here in Westhampton Beach. Together they are adding many more varieties of delicious mouth watering appetizing and delicatessen to the menu using Izzy’s secret recipes to carry on their tradition of serving the best Bagels and Deli around.


Th e Modern Snack Bar, located on the Main Road in Aquebogue, is nothing short of a classic piece of Americana. As a beacon in the dark night, the landmark 50’s neon sign would welcome visitors and locals home to the North Fork. Th at sign stands tall today reminding all of a more simple and honest time. Simple and honest could also describe the Snack Bar itself.

In 1950, Wanda & John Wittmeier worked for Wanda’s sister, Lillian, who owned the Snack Bar at that time. It was truly a snack bar then. Patrons could see their burgers and sandwiches prepared fr om the six counter stools, while others in the small dining area eagerly awaited delivery of their salad plates or hot fudge sundaes. Regular customers included many fr om local businesses in Riverhead town, as well as workers fr om Grumman, Hazeltine, LILCO, and NY Telephone. In 1956, Wanda & John purchased the Snack Bar fr om Lillian. Th ey worked very hard to build a successful business by listening to their customers.

Th e regulars suggested to Wanda that they wanted more variety on the menu. So in 1957, a kitchen was built so John could prepare new menu items like roast L.I. duck, sauerbraten, & fr esh baked pies. Over the years, there have been many additions to the original building and to the menu. Currently, the Snack Bar seats 120 people. You can still have a seat at the counter and watch the busy staff prepare sandwiches or tempting desserts.

Th ough times have changed, the “at home” feeling at the Snack Bar has not. It is not uncommon to hear stories today fr om customers whose parents or grandparents brought them to the Snack Bar when they were kids. From the beginning, Wanda & John’s concept for the Snack Bar was simple; to serve good food at a reasonable price in a fr iendly manner. Since 1988, that concept is being carried out by brothers, Otto & John.

Whether you are having lunch or dinner, there is something for everyone on the menu. Complement your meal with local wine, by the glass or bottle. Ice cold beer and classic cocktails are also available. While here, you must try the mashed turnips. Take them home by the pint or quart.

In an era of restaurant chains, convenience stores, and high-end fi ne dining establishments, Otto & John Wittmeier have faced the challenges of running a successful family business without losing the simple and honest qualities of the past. Congratulations to the Modern Snack Bar, celebrating their 60th year in business on the North Fork.
