VENDICARI Hiking and MARZAMEMI

Meet your driver and guide at the hotel lobby and depart for a special excursion.

For anyone holidaying in the southeast of Sicily, one place that really shouldn’t be missed, is the Vendicari NaturalReserve. There are many reasons for this assertion, none more convincing than the fact that its beautiful selectionof beaches is amongst the least frequented in Sicily……at least by humans.

Situated on the southern-most part of Sicily’s east coast, Vendicari is a mixture of lagoons (pantano), sand dunes, rocky coastlines, and sandy beaches. It was instituted in 1984 and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The high salinity of the ground provides an ideal habitat for Mediterranean maquis, herbs such as thyme androsemary and other prickly customers such as juniper bushes.

Thousands of migrating birds pass a few days here on their way to or from Africa. Flamingos, herons, storks andcormorants are regulars during autumn, while in the winter, ducks, mallards, pintails and terns take over. Anornithologists' paradise, there are several hides for those who bring their binoculars. For those whose interestsare of a more active kind, Vendicari offers a wonderful environment for a good seaside walk with only the soundof the waves, birds and the wind for company.

After the visit, discover Marzamemi. Just a few kilometers up the coast from Italy's southernmost point, in thedeep south-east of Sicily, there is one of Sicily's prettiest seaside villages. It was the Arabs of the 10th century whoput Marzamemi on the map. They not only gave the village its poetic name, Mars? al-hamam (translating assomething like Turtle Dove Bay) but also built the original tonnara (tuna processing plant), which was to becomeone of the most important on the island. Although the tonnara itself is no longer in function, Marzamemicontinues its artisanal fishing and processing activities, producing all manner of delicacies, including canned tuna, dried tuna roe (bottarga), smoked swordfish, marinated anchovies, seafood pasta condiments, tuna salamis andmuch more besides! The old centre of the village, most of which dates back to the arrival of the Principe diVilladorata in the mid-18th century, is situated on a little promontory and organized around the extremelypicturesque Piazza Regina Margherita. On the south side is the little fishing harbor with its bobbing fleet ofcolorful wooden boats, on the others a series of charming buildings, including the tonnara, the prince'saristocratic palazzo and a row of fishermen's houses, whose sky blue doors and potted red geraniums lend achromatic vivacity to the whole picture. Narrow streets lead off the main square, offering glimpses of theturquoise sea to the east and north.

After the visit, return to your accommodation.
