Trends in Innovation

» Globalisation: ever-tighter margins, ever-faster time to market, leaner and swifter new market entrants.

» The internet: the fast global spread of new ideas, methods and processes.» Knowledge economy: businesses strive to retain and attract the best talent to

ensure competitive advantage; once closely-held knowledge is now shared globally across academics, companies and governments.

Global trends have created the need for a new C21st operating model where innovation is intrinsic to every process within an organisation.

SNCF is the French national rail transport company

» Worked together to develop a mobile paayment service using Internet over the mobile phone called ‘Tikephone’ including development of:

» the website www.tikefone.com which can be accessed using a WAP phone to purchase tickets

» the encrypted bar code which is sent by MMS to users’ mobile phones» a specific server to host the application which sends customers text

messages and MMS via French mobile telephone operators

» For SNCF the solution offered an extremely cost-effective payment solution costing only 10 cents per ticket, much less than the €5-6 cost when tickets are sold from a ticket booth.

» Users found the solution simple and practical as they didn’t have to carry cash or tickets.

» The system has now been rolled out to other regional train lines (TER), in particular in the Rhone–Alpes region and there are plans to roll-out to bus companies

» Improve service to customers who increasingly have more mobile lifestyles» Reduce costs and fraud by providing a ticket-less travel solution» Strengthen its reputation as an innovative and client-centric company in the

run-up to the privatisation of railways in France, due to take place in 2012

Sheffield Station Intelligent CCTV

“Intelligent CCTV technology is so sophisticated that it can be used to detect whether a passenger is standing too close to the platform edge, if any luggage has been abandoned or to monitor queue lengths. We are confident that this new approach will ensure our passengers feel safer, especially at night, and that it will lead to a reduction in crime at stations. When an incident occurs, our staff will be able to respond much more quickly, giving us a far better chance at catching the perpetrators and obtaining a successful conviction.”

Garry Raven, Managing Director of Sheffield Station
